- CLEVELAND IRON TRADE.
CLEVELAND IRON TRADE. MiDDLESBROuan, Tuesday.— Though the market showed a rather firmer feeling there was not very much business. TlieHa has been an upward movement in Scotch iron, and the holders of Cleveland brands asked more money in sympathy, though buyers did not. readily yield. Still, where they had to get iron. 38s 3d to 38s 6d had to be paid for -No. 3, the makers being at er" the latter price and selling small quantities, while met-- chants did business at the lower rate. The transactions were, however, very limited, the Scotch movement being regarded as probably only of a temporary character. The quotation for warrants was 38s buyers, 6tl more sellers. Grey forge was 37s 3d. Hematite, mixed numbers, was 51s. Shipments are extremely disappointing to the Continent, though fairly gooil coastwise. The total delivery is 28,000 tons to yester- day, compared with 34,000 tons last April, for 13 days. Finished iron and steel producers are getting slack— prices are for iron ship plates or ordinary bars, £ 612s 6d ditto, £ 5 10s steel plates, £ 6 2s 6d, all less discount. I THE TEMPERANCE PARTY AT…
THE TEMPERANCE PARTY AT ABEB- CARN AND THE VICAR OF MYNYDDISLWYN. TO THE KDITOR. SIE,—I should like to reply to the Vicar of llynyddishvyn through your paper. The vicar says I was the only ratepayer present who ob- jected to give the refreshments to the paupers. I did not do so. I merely suggested that it should he optional to have beer or tea. Believing drink to be the seed bed of pauperism and crime, I con- sidered I was watching- the interests of the rate- payer^ by so doing equally with the Vicar. Ha says I was not required to be there. Does ha mean I had no right to be there ? If so, 1 should like to know who has. I have no doubt the Vicar has great power in the parish. At the same time, he is not" the parish." He accuses me of having a nice cup of tea, but not at my own expense. I believe it was at. the expense of the ratepayers. If that is wrong, I stand guilty but do not all th« committee, Ahe vicar included, also stand guilty, the only difference being in the liquid drunk. A to the poor old pauper referred to, I merely asked him a. question—if his house was freehold—and by so doing was able to have him made exempt. I think a vicar should set an example of charity to his parishioners by stating facts as they were sub- mitted at the meeting, and not putting things in a wrong light.—I am, &c., RICHARD JONES. Bryn-terrace, Abercarn. April 14.
INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS IN CARMARTHENSHIRE.
INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS IN CARMAR- THENSHIRE. TO TH: EDITOR. SIR,—What is the reason for this fresh agita tion for more schools than have been mentioned by the joint committee in East Carmarthenshire ? What will the gain be to the county in lessening the rates or otherwise ? Does the scattered popu- lation of East Carmarthenshire justify more than two schoolsOne strong school at Llanelly and one strong school at Ammanford will be better than three for the eastern division. Ammanford being a centre for agriculture, chemical industry, paint works, woollen factories, iron foundries, tin- plate works, and surrounded by numerous flourishing collieries, makes it most advantageous for technical instruction in these subjects. Am- mantord is the most convenient centre ilt the county (after Carmarthen and Llanelly), commanding the largest population within the shortest radius. Ammanford is surrounded by three railway stations, giving great convenience of access by the Great Western Railway and London and North-Westei-n Railway. There is a direct com- munication without changing once from BrYIr amman, Garnant, Glanammah, Pontardulais, Llandilo, Ffairfach, Derwydd Road, and Llandebic stations. The road accommodation is exceptional, there being more than nine carriage roads approaching the town. It is recommended by the act to take advantage of existing schools, and in this respect Ammanford has pessessed a successful school for the last 12 years, which proves more forcibly than words or arguments the advantage that the place possesses as an educational centre. No fair committee can ignore Ammanford in the distribution of intermediate schools for Carmarthenshire.—I am, &c., April 13th, 1891. TAXPAYER.
A PLEA FOR DEVONIANS.
A PLEA FOR DEVONIANS. TO THK EDITOK. Sir,—There are about—as near as I can judge— 10,000 Devonians in Cardiff and district, all of whom would be willing to visit their native county on any special occasion, such as Easter or Whitsuntide. if a reasonable fartj was charged by the railway companv- On looking over the list of excursions this Easter, I was rather surprised to find that the Devonians had been left out in the cold—that there was no excursion to any part of Devon. Why is this ? Surely it would pay the Great Western Railway to run a.n excursion to, say, Exeter, for 10s there and back, leaving here on Saturday at about 1.30 or 2 p.m., and Exeter, on the return journey, on the following Tuesday some time.—I am, &c., Cardiff, April 13. LORD JAMES DOUGLAS AND THE CENSUS. Lord .Ta.me Douglas writc9 :—May I request that you will kindly insert this leMer as a HajJ denial as to what took place in the West London police-court ot April 10th ? According to the re- ports published in your paper, as well as others, I am made to appear as the returner of the census paper in which I describe my wife as a cross sweep" and a "lunatic," and my son as a shoe- black." Now, sir, when the census paper came I was ill in bed. suffering from rheumatic gout, and the paper was not tilled up by me. My two stepsons—boys of 14 or 15 years of age—got hold of the paper and filled it up as described, with no knowledge of mine. The first 1 knew of it was the rpport in the Erewit;i Standard. For their ridiculous and childish folly both boys de- serve a good flogging. I hope you will itindly give this publication, as by the newspaper re- ports I am placed in a very ridiculous position.

THE BOY MESSENGERS. In the Queen's Bench on Tuesday—bef ore J ustice* Smith and Grantham—the eases of the Attorney* General versus the Boy Messengers Company, and the same versus the District Messenger* Company, were down ^for hearing. The Solicitor- General stated that in both cases the defendant-* had consented to an injunction against them on terms which had been signed by counsel. Ttx Postmaster-General was only anxious to vindicate his authority, and he hoped there would be no occasion to enforce any injunction. The com panics might continue their business.
CARDIFF HEALTH COMMITTEE.
CARDIFF HEALTH COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Cardiff Health Committee was held on Tuesday morning, under the chairmanship, of Alderman Jacobs, there being also present- The Mayor (Lord Bute), Alderman Cory, Councillors James, Ramsdale, T. Rees, Shepherd-, Brain, Andrews, and A. Rees, Mr W. Harpui (borough engineer), Dr Walford (medical officer of health), and Mr J. Woosey (superintendent of scavenging). The only question arising out of tin medical otticer s report was as to the supply of water to vessels, Dr Walford stating that through a. defect in the Act of Parliament port sanitary authorities could nob compel shipowners to pro- vide a proper water supply. Some corres- pondence had taken place with the Local Govern. ment Board, and they suggested that they should be asked to obtain powers to insert in the act governing these matters s. clause similar to that relating to urban sanitary authorities. A series of plans v/ere exhibited by Mr Harpur (borough engineer) of the Infectious Dis- eases Hospital, which it is proposed to erect on the. Canton Moors. The drawing showed a number ot. blocks of buildings, all detatehed, but connected by covered ways. In the centre of the site will be situ' ated the administrative block which isto contain upon the ground floor a doctor's room, dispensary matron's, visitors', nurses', servants', and dining- rooms, with kitchens, wasVihouses. and general stores. Upon the first floor are eight servants' bedrooms, 11 nurses' bedrooms, bathrooms, &c. The two chief ward-blocks will each give accom- modation for 22 patients, with nurses' rooms, bath-rooms, vcc., while the isolation ward it meant to accommodate six patients. In addition there will be a laundry, a boiler-house, mortuary, stable, and ambulance shed. With tha object of securing dryness, the whole of the ward buildings will be raised upon arches standing four feet from the ground. whlle. the administrative block will be built upon a terrace a similar height above the ground level. A verandah will run along the southern side of each of the wards. It was agreed to call a special meeting for the thorough inspection of the plans, Mr Harpur, in the meantime, to fill in the dimen. sions of each of the rooms.
