---FINANCIAL NEWS ----..
FINANCIAL NEWS SOUTH WALES FINANCE FRIDAY, March 13. Business was brisker to-day, but there is no quotable change in prices, although Taffs are weaker. There are new sellers of Mountstuart A shares, D. Davis and Son's ordinary, Newport Abercarne ordinary, at 94; Rhymney Iron old, at 24s 6d Tucker's ordinary, at 9' National Bank of "4 Wales, County of Gloucester Bank, and Devon and Somerset B debentures, at 25%. New buyers seek Barry new debenture stock, at 113 Rhymney Railway ordinary, Penarth Slipway A shares at 39, and B shares at 24; Hill's Dry Dock shares, Central Dry Dock shares, International Coal shares, Tredegar A shares, allotments of London and Provincial Bank new shares Rhymney Iron 5 per cent. debenture bonds, at 93: and Cardiff Junction Dry Dock shares, at 24!- In view of the near approach of the period of grace allowed before the M'Kinley tariff touches tin plate-, the. following estimate of the proba- bilities of American manufacture will be read with interest :— The seventh annual gathering of the Western Packers' Canned Association has just been held in Chicago, when delegates from dl parts of the United States assembled to discuss the state of tbe great canning industries which flourish in America. The M'Kinley bill has imposed a new tax of 6,000,000 dols. per annum on the people for their tinware and roofing material. This was in addition to a tax of 6,000.000 dels, previously existing, the proceeds of which went into the Public Treasury. The new tax was imposed avowedly m order to divert the first 6,000.000 dols. away from the»Treasury to the pockets < f private individuals and to ad 1 thereto an equal amount. When the object of the bill is fully attained the whole 12,000,000 dok will be an annual subsidy to the tinplate men. The latter have actually begun to pocket the bonus, s > they say at all events. We have received two or three samples of the articles, the makers of which evidently consider that they are entitled to some credit for pocketing their proportion of the sub- sidy. A law has been passed to enable í hew to plunder the community, and they come forward gleefully and say. We avo rtoinif it, we aredoiug- it, ever, si'/nunY' and they think that they ought to be applauded. There is not the slightest sign or probability that they will lower their demands or consent to take less than the which the law provides f jr them. Mr C. W. Norton undertook to reassure the delegates upon the delicate point of raising the price of the tin cans, of which so many are used, and his address, published in the Chicago G'roccr, m well worth considering, containing as it does more solid reasons than li; 'tve yet been exhibited for the establishment; of the manufacture of tin- ■ plates in America. The rapid growth of the tinplate industry in the Scurii is about coincident with the development of the canning industry in the United States, h,th periods being covered by little more than 10 years. Jn 1890, the total experts of the tinplates reached 418,725 tons. Of this total, 313,108 tons went to the United States. The rest of the world took the remaining 100,517 tons. The 318,108 tons sent to America reduced to boxes of 103 pounds each, numbered 6,59T,796 boxes, and the average cost to the American buyer is put down by Mr Norton as about five dollars per box, or roundly about 33,000,000 dols. for the year's supply. Tn 1889 the amount was a little less. If the United States continue to buy tinplates for the next 10 years on this scale, they will pay 400,000,000 dols. between now and A.D. 1900. Mr Norton prefers to hupe that instead cf paying England this large sum, the greater part thereof will be distributed amongst the citizens :f the Republic, and the Americans will by that time be exportin tinplates to Great Britain. Mr Sort on expects that what has happened in steel rails will happen in tin plates. He points out that gooJ steel tin plates of the quality used for cans are worth to-day in Chicago from 5dols. 75c. to 6dols. per box, under tho present duty of Ie. per pound, and predicts that within three years, or five at most, better plates d American manufacture will be sold in Chicago for 4dols. inli- Norton speaks as a buyer of Welsh tin plates to the extent of l,000,000dols. per year. He expects to see the first increase in the cost of American tin plates followed in a short time by ,tn cheaper and better can than have yet been made that the demand for canned goods will increase, and winders why a great nation like the people -f the United States have waited iintil 1?91 to supply themselves with their cwn tin plates. That the tr?,de is likely to undergo serious changes appears certain, and if the in- dustry beccni x established to any considerable extent in America before tho next Presidential election, and before the destruction of the present Republican majority in the Senate, it may be more difficult to abolish the prohibitive McKinley tin-plate tariff than is generally sup- posed in South Wales. The Newport market report front Messrs Betton, Sayce, Vaughan, and Co. states: There has been a good business in local rail- ways, Barry, Taff. Rhymney, and Rhondaa and Swansea Bay Railway, and Severn and Wye Railway Stocks. Barry has been in demand, and there arc now buyers at 222.
