------------FINANCIALNEWS…
FINANCIALNEWS -a. THURSDAY, August 7ch. There b3 been advance in the valuti ot local stocks. Taffs were bid for in London at, 67, immediately after the halt-yearly meeting, and there have been transactions locally at 66. The advance in value is particularly noteworthy 10 view of Mr George White's expressed determination to assail the policy of tho board, and the general administration of the line. Mr White has hitherto been so sturdy a champion of the T.V.R. that be 18 in a position to make most destructive assault upon the management, should he succeed, as is highly probable,in bringing about a meeting of the shareholders, and the appointment of a committee of investigation, very much light will be thrown upon the affairs of the company—particularly into the influences wlllh make its working expanses so very high. Barry stock is firmer, and has been dealt in at 193. The following letter is an indication of that widening market which holders of this stock are likely shortly to reap the bauefit of The following letter appeared in yesterday's Financial News BARRY DOCK AND RAILWAY. It is surprising that tiie ordinary shares of the above are not more generally noticed and more widely distributed than they aeem to be, the reason seeming to lie in the tact that they are at present very little known. When the public can appreciate the magnifi- cent prospect of this company, the ordinary euar, now standing at 192 on account of the pending local labour dispute (but recently at 198), will, without doubt, touch the comparatively high figure of 230 within a very short time. The fact that tor the last half-year the directors have been able to recommend a dividend of 10 per cent, and carry over what equals another 2 pur cent., and this for the second half of the first year only of its existsuce, shows what a huge success the undertaking i8, and is likely still to bp. The dock is owned principally by the large South Wales colliery proprietors and shipowners, and hence full work is continually assured indeed, its numerous tips are already found to lie insufficient for the work required of them, and several new ones are in the course of arection. A graving dotk, also belonging to tine company, is to oe at once constructed, and this will ensure a further large increase of revenue, for, as a fact, over 7C vessels which would have come to Barry during the past year shipped coal elsewhere on account of increased dry dock accommodation. Tiie Vale of Glamorgan Railway Company, although shelved for the present, is also certaiu of b,ilJg it.Zain taken in hand and completed, and those who know the wealth of the coal district that th.t line will tap, will appreciate the enor- mous benefit its construction will bastow on Barry Dock. Tuero is very large scope for dock extension, and as the accommodation is already getting limited, there is every prospect that, with in- creased accommodation and facilities for shipping coal, the directors will, in the courne of the next few years, be in a position to recommend not 10 per cent., but considerably over 15 per cent., and the lucky shareholders t,, complacently view their shares sought after at ;)1.'0.- I am, sir, your, &c., Q. Messrs Thackeray and Co. report as follows Noiwithstanding that tha tlii-e-itened strike on local ruilwitys has aS8nmpd definite shape, the prices of Barrys and T,lff Vales have somewhat ctrenethened. This is, perhaps, due in some measure to a belief that a more tonciliatory atti- tude is being shown on both irip", Barry stock has changed hands t"¡,,y at 193. and there are inquiries for 'l';¡ff'l at 66. each showing an advance on the wfek. Riiyuineys are aiso inquired for at 138. Tii-^re has nor, been so much doing in pre- r-rence and debenture stock'. Some Bur- Dock 4 per Gents, is sHi: obtainable at HPj, Taff V de 3 per Cents, at 94,t. Barry 4 per Cents. at 117, while Brecon and Mert.hyr B Debenture and B irry Third Preference Suck are inquired for. OLiier markets have been to a certain extent pura- lised by the labour question, and with the excep- tion of a few transactions ill London and Pro- vincials, National Bank of Wales, and Hancock Brewery shares, there his been little in the miscellaneous market to attract attention. Colliery shares quiet. Norths have, how- sver, improved while a fair business has been done in Great Western New B. Sellers are offering—Cardiff lea Shares, Ponty- pool Gas and Water Shares, London and Provin- cial Bank at 19. -----MONEY MARKET.
MONEY MARKET. LONDON, Thursday. There was no movement in the bank rate. Ths tone of the Money Market is ouiet, and rather weak. The placiug of a piemium of neariy per cent. on gold by the Bank of France tells against the probabilities of our receiving any large supplies "f the meta! from that quarter, and it is doubtful whether the export from New York will be kept ap when crops begin to move. On the other hand the chances of the resources of the Bank of England being drawn upon to any extent during tha immediate future, are not at all well defined. Short loans met with a modern,-e amount of and were quoted at 4 to H discount. liusiu-»« was quiet, three months' Bank bills being done at, 4 per cent. Paris Cheoue Exchange is 25 26j The feature of the Bank teturu is the heavy toss in bullion and expansion in note circulation, both being due to heavy internal demanu for currency usual at this P""ou, The result is a loss in reserve of L609,135, the pro- portion to liabilities at the sairw .ittLe, 'inclining to 36'6 p-r cent., or nearly 2 per cent. There was a further sharp rally in Arg^fae. and Cedulas. A favourable construction upon political a>èWS from Buenos Ayres, aua aiarther reduction .(1 sold premium to 160 per ceo.t. shows that the tension is slackening. The British Railway Market was quieter. Variations were merely fractional, but were generally favourable. Brighton A was again the centre of a stmdl speculation for a rise, and the price rose to 162, but t,hi?,,el<j«e was rather lownr. South Eastern A was weak. North British was itrotlz. Nothing much was being done in Foreign Railways. Mexican (Vera Cruz) were firm, until the finish, when they gave way. Mexican Con- trals were dull. Lombards were weak. Amongst South American Railways, Buenos Ayrea and Rosario rose 2, and some others 4 to 1. Thft Nitrate Market remains in a state of ex- treme quietness. Santa Luisa, San Jorge, and San Sebastian each fell 1. Miscellaneous securities have been quiet and featureless. Banks doing business with River Plate were firmer. NORTH OF ENGLAND IRON AND COAL TRADES. MlBDLEyBKOUGH, Thursday,—The pig iron market has been very iirui, aud there has been a further advance since Tuesday's market, makers this morning quoting 44- No, 3, tor pnflnpt delivery, though about 9 i loss would be taken, forward, by some firms but buyers content them- selves to only purchase tor limited periods. There in not much buying, either, for prompt, for although tliAi's is rather a scarcity of available iron in N". 3, there is no great pressure of de- mand just now, nor is there hkely to he. Ship- ments arosmsiiar, and they are not likely to grow hiring the present month. The price of irou will, no doubt, depend upon warrants. Consumers regard the present rate too high, when the figure f■ t No. 4 foigM is 3, per tou less instead of a difference of 1.. The warrant market really sets tll" price for No. 3, ;"h1 that is a mercurial that though prices in the first three days of the present woek were increased about 91 to Is per ton, there may be s<gain a reduction nr any moment. The tignrn for hematite is 54s 61. The manufactured iron trade has been quiet as a wh.ole, though there have beon spficial depart- ments which have shown a little more briskness. There has bean a little more demand for plates for shipbuilding purposes, but otherwise there is not much inquiry, and ship- building is likely to dwindle. The pricot are about—common b<1r, R5 12 i 6 1 A ng) es, ;C5 2, 6, t,, 25 5s -hip plates, JB5 5< to 25 7s 6 i bridge plates, LS 12s 6 I, less 2, lwr cent. Steel is about the same, .ship plates being £ 6 5s aud rails 25. The shipbuilding trade is .tldy receiving an order at somewhat rare intervals. It, Was lately re- ported that a number of orders for new ships had been given out, but inquiry fails to trace them. The coal trade is very firm all round. There is not, of course, much demand for households at this period of the year, but all other classes of coals :ire in good request, and there is no suplus upon the market. If the Durham miners should adopt a lessened hour programme, as many of them ad- vocate, the supplies of coal will be shorter still, and prices will probably be stronger. The Sgara for unscreeued coal is 7 61 to 8" at the pit. Steam sort* maintain theic prices firmly in the Tyne and Wear district, and best are 13 .f.o. b. Small coals are rather firmer gas about 12s to 12 6 1 f.o.b. The coke trade is very firm, and those who have good brands to dispose ot ask almost 16? per ton, delivered at the Cleveland blast furnaces.

THE NEW MARKET AT ; CARDIFF.
THE NEW MARKET AT CARDIFF. LAYING THE MEMORIAL STONE. On Thur jay morning the memorial dts ne of the new market between St Mary-street and Working-street, Cardiff, was laid in the presence of a large and representative assemblage by DO Alderman D Edgar Jones, M.D., J.P., the cbai man of the property and markets committoe. The members and officials of the corporation assembled in the Council Chamber at about half-past lZ. and after having partaken of light refref3bmenot formed in procession in the lobby and walked to the site of the new budding. The procession was in the following order :—A detachment of police and firemen, the mace and seal bearers, and other corporate officers, the Mayor (Alderman W< S-.xnderg, J.P.), and the Town Clerk (MrJ. L. Whealley), 10 their robes, Alderman D. Jones* the aldermon aud councillors of tbe corporationg aud the several heads of departments in tbs borough offices. Upon arriving on the site of tb< new structure the Mayor said it was his pleasant duty to ask Alderman E Igar Jones to lay the memorial stone of the new ilia rkats for Cardiff. He might remark that some 36 years ago be entered the old maikec f(or the first time, aftet coming from a town that possessed market accommodation unsurpassed by that of any towit in England of corresponding size. He left tM Cardiff maikat wishing it was more suitable for its purposes, more ele- gant in appearance, and more an honour to the town. He certainly was dilp appointed in it. He was not sure that he waf quite orthodox on tbe snbjact of markets, and b. might be accused of helping to hinder the re* building of that market some years ago. He had bis own views about the matter, and waf quite used to being in a minority. Looking at the high rents and rates paid for shops in Cardiff, he thought markets were a little bit out ot date. But the will of the people had to decide, and he was one of those who held that the people should have their will. Tha matter had been discussed from time to time in such a way that be was oluite prepared to say that the people's will was being accomplished in that work being carried out. (Applause.) Aldermau Edgar Janes waf the pilot who had steered the scheme through the various difficulties which had surrounded it. Before requesting him to lay the foundation stone, he (the mayor) called upon the town clerk' to read a resolution of the markets committee passed on the 18th Juno last, in which this pas' sage occurred:—"This committee deems this a tittiug opportunity to express its sense of the ability and seal, all well as the courtesy and con* sideration, with which for a period of about seven years Alderman D. Edgar Jones has presided over their deliberations." (Applause.)—Mr W. Harpur, the borough engineer, then presented Aldeiman Jones with a handsome trowel and mallet, of silver and ebony, with engraved inscription, as a gift trom himself at architect cf the building, and Mr Jamel Allen as contractor. The stone having been well and truly laid, the worthy alderman said the history of Cardiff market was known to com- paratively few, but still it was very interesting. Parliamontary sanction for the establishment of a market by the Corporation was obtained in 1835. Before that time markets and fairs were held in the public streets. In 1856 the market was erectod at a cost of 27,381, which was obtained from the sale of a freehold estate which the Cor- poration then possessed. For 54 years that market did tile work that was required of it fot the town of Cardiff. As the town increased in sizoi and population, the unsatisfactory character of the market became apparent. The question of rebuilding it had been discussed by the council for 11 years. The first scheme was prepared iu 1879, with a view. to making certaio structural alterations, but from that time until the tina' scheme was resolved upon, 25 designs for re-arrangement, alterations, and rebuilding had been prepared. A deal of time and labour had been expended in ascertain- ing how the site could be utilised to the bast advantage, and care had been taken in the ne" building to afford the greatest amount of accoØ- inodation. 011 the 9 h September last, the council passed a resolution adopting the present piaas, and sanctioning an expenditure of L15,000 upon the new structure. There was a strong feel- ing in the town that the market should bs utilised more than onco a week, aud its value could bo much increase. by its being opened daily. On the ground floor of the new edifice there would be fotir avenues, each 11 feat wide- There would be C8 lock-up shops on the ground floor, and 100 stall*, and thure was a small portiog of space intended as a temporary fisb' market. A gallery would extend round tbe fout sides of the building, and be approached by fout broad staircases, and there would be elev ators fot the convenience of the The 2alleriel would contain 34 shops and 102 stalls. AldermaH Jones then quoted various figures to show that much larger revenue might be expected from the new building than bad been yielded by the On the proposition of Alderman Lewis, by Sir Morgan Morgan, a cordial vote of thau)O was unanimously passed to Aldermau Edglif Jan eF, for having laid the memorial stoue.-TijroO cheers for the success of the new building havivi been given, the procossion returned to the ToW^' hall. Tbe members of tbe council, officers, aWf friends then sat down to a champagne lunchec I the Assembly rooKiP, at the kind iuvit; of the chairman of the property and mat. committee, who occupied the chair.
