MONEY MARKET. a—
MONEY MARKET. a — .LONDON, Saturday. In the Money Market ther* was less pressure, but the tone remained firm. Although it is pro- bable that gold may come to us from America, not much credence is Riven to the report that wo are to receive large supplies from France. It is not the first time that such a roport has been circulated. Being Saturday not much business was done but as a Rood inquiry is promised on Monday in connection with the Stock Exchange settleanant, the tone has remained firm. Short loans have been quoted at 4; to 41, but the last price wae not better than 4 per cent. Discounts were stronpr. The general rate for three months' bills was 4a per cent. £ Stock markets to-day were free from all excite- ment. There was a recovery in South American issues ad the result of bear accounts, and a reaction in Grand Trunks from sharp rise of yes- terd,y; otherwise, the tendency was not too strong, in fact there was a praiseworthy inclina- tion to await developments of account before em- barking in any fresh transactions of importance. Consul* closed at 96g to 96;! fur delivery, and gój to 96 for acconnr, 21 per Cent. (Chiltisrs'), S7¡f to 93a; do. 2ž per Cent., 932 to 94i Local Loans Stock, 100 to 10H. For Foreign G<; v eminent Seouries the market has fceea distinctly firmer. All South American issues have hardened. Argentine Bonds, Colombian and Urupin.y show a riso of £ to 2, and hate till;h"d up at about their Tne crisis is still raping hoth at Buenos Ayres acd Monte VMieo, but there are one or two encouraging 'features noticeable. In the first place, the rrold premium has receded to 198 per ceur., but thi", is only a small mercy. What is of rnori c"t:¡;er¡tlf\nce is the lieteimination of the finance minister of the Argentine Republic not to increase ad. lib the circulation-ot the furcod paper currency. In- ternational Stocks, though quier, have been firm. Egyptian Sto* k, were wanted, specially Unified, whicÍl closed 9 16 np. Turkish were fractionally 'better, th* various issues rising k to i in spite of tbe reported increasing hosLile a.L¡;udA of Russian in the matter of the 'indemnity. French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian were quiet. Hungarian is rather easier. Mexican slightly receded. Peruvian steady. A moderate business was transacted in British Railways. The announcement that the Housty of Lords had thrown out the bill for the absorption of the Glasgow and South-Western by the North British did not have much influence. North British fell k and Caledonian rdso -§. Had the bill passed, the Ca!-jdouian would Iiavo had runn1n powers over the Glasgow rmd South- Western, hcnce the loss of the bdl cannot ha va benefited the Caledonian much. A feature has been the demand for-Metropolitan and District Stock en dividend rumours. Metropolitan rose 1. and District i, Them was somo buying of Little Cbathams" which roso t, 24 on the improving tiuancial position of the company. Great :a.8tern8, as lIual, w;:re strong, and with Great Western and North-Western and North-Eastern advanced a t). Hull and Barnsley was dull. Southern Deferred issues dropped a little, on fears that the dividends may be disappointing. Brighton A falling g, and South-Eist.^rn A t. American Railways have been uriinfluencea by any special tenture. The spurt noticed at tho closo yesterday has not been maintained, but the markut has remained firm. Wall-street seems disposed to take a raoro hopeful view of the situation, and speculation here is running more into "bullish" channels. Apart from our old friend, the Silver Bill, which has now been on duty for some considerable time, the rumours of working arrangements in the west aro norp. pacific, and if the account here pona (ff 8mootbly prices may be expected to improve. Denver issues were strong, rising §, and a similar rise was noticed in Un on Pacific. Louisville aud Nashville and NorL11k Preference roue | to Central Pacific" Mdwaukoes, Lake St>ort-s, an;1 Atlantics were firm, but Eril3: Northern Pacific Preference, and Wabash were v;e;>k. With reforenco to Canadian Railways, Can- adian Pacific shares improved Grand Trunks opened strongly at a rise of å to 5, but later on there "was some f<elling, especially of Second Pr»>fRrenca, which fell 3. First Preference also finished up á down. Iu Foreign Railways dealings were small. There was r.me recovtry in South Americans. Buenos Ayres and Rosario ros,) 3); and Central Argentine 2. issuus wer* firm. Vera Criio rose § to j, and Moxican Centra! f. In Nitrat.es there apnoared to be scarcely any- thing doing Aranco Preference were weaker. Am(m"t Miscellaneous securities Bell's Abes- tos fell it. Hudson's Bay and Hotchkiss were weak. MAUCO NATUKAL LlTIIA WATER.—Litbia water has long been known as an effectual pre- vsntive and cure for £ out, rheumatism, grave!, ptone, and kidney affections, nnd that obtained ac St. Marco is specially recommended by the medical faculty for those'disaases. Somstimos with and sometimes without Scotch whisky it often nucceeds when everything ehe has failed. Besides its valuable therapeutic propertIes it is a pieaaant, refreshing drink, and it will become more and more popular as it becomes mere generally known. Over 100,000 bottles of the water 1.I:\ve been sold during the past twelve months, without any ex- tensive advertising, and there is little doubt that by taking advautago of the ordinary methods of makiii,; its properties kUiJwn the sale will soon be increased a hundredfold. By selling it in small bottles as well as large, so as to IJrjll it within runge of competition with soda water, lomonad?, nd othor aerated waters, thBre is an ûxcelIent prpspect of its beiug brought into universal use. SOUTH WALES FINANCE.
SOUTH WALES FINANCE. SATURDAY, July 12. Fully a week ugo, every reference to steamship property was made in mournful tone "Rates in efery direction have fallen so low that no room is left for further decline," steamers were "money- losing and all the burden of blame was laid at the door of those who had "driven to death the sixty fourth share principle," and who bad iatrod«&9d "steamship-owning in peuny- packets." Anathemas, of no mild type, were hurled at country shareholders who have spent -their lives between a grocer's shop and the local chapelthe trade was said to ba cursed with imen like this;" and no hope of salvation was held out br anybody concerned. The anathema came with a wail from woful managers; and, curiously enough, all the fault, was said to originate "in the North." With this allegation we may agree, for the North is a I grandly indefinite indication, and may mean many places. It does not mean South Wales, nor could it be appiied-to us, for here wo never do wrong. Hearty sympathy must be felt for men charged with the duty of earning profits in a time of falling rates, with steamers of olden build men who are induced to declaim against the "inscmate folly" of giving orders for new steamers which will make profits where old boats i -ami not so very old eitHer-would experience serious loss. Fear of further competition, and knowledge that competing steamers with engines of tho latest type must inevitably reduce the earning power of vessels under their charge, accounts for much of the denunciation which has been so freely veuted of late. Times were bad unquestionably, and managers were just entering into July, always a bad part of the year. Yet, before ten days of the month had run out, the change came, and came with a suddenness most remarkable. The rise in homeward rates for wheat, which we announced throe or four days ago, has been fol- lowed by similar movement in other cargoes. A fixture rcado to-day r.ay be quoted in further illustration of the change, shipment from Nico- laieff to Cardiff direct being agreed upon at 17?, whereas a week ago 12s 6i was the figure. For tallow to the Bristol Channel the rate a few days ago was about 14s now 17, has been refused, ¡ and 191 is demanded—17H for Cardiff direct. It is all attributed to the weather. "Another I week of this weather will make an awful difference in the price of grain, for a great deal of the ¡' heavy crops are beaten down in the southern part of England." Telegrams received this after- noon from Southern Russia report very heavy rain there on Thursday and Friday; a most un- fortunate circumstance, for much of the corn is cut and is still oiit, E; that there is danger of sprouting. The Egyptian crop is very good, and there the complaint is of too much dry woather. Outward freights are, however, very little better. Turning to local stocks and shares, we have to report prevailing quietude. Nothing was done this morning in Taffs and Barrys and yesterday's quotations in these aro maintained. Rhymney Iron Shares have been dealt in at 183; and Bute Dry Dock at 43. Before Ion?, the South Wales railway managers must takv up the question of the" zone tariff" system. Everything is quiet now, and everybody who is anybody is off holiday-making, or getting ready to go. But a coupla of months hence, when they return to business, invigorated by rest and change, we shall probably bo commencing one of the most important discussions of recent years in relation to railway management, for with the end of August will close the first year of the zone system in Hungary. The returns of ton months traffic are now to hand, and these indicate the remarkable effect which change of policy has produced in Hungary, a change so great and so desirable that Austria and Germany are likely to follow suit by adopting the zone" system. There is talk already that one of the ELiglisli lines is to have a trial made, and the talk doubtless arises from the fact that Sir E. Watkin is giving" special attention to the matter. The ten months return from Hungary show that during the period August, 1889, to May, 1290, the number of persons carried by the railways was 10,C65,COO, as compared with 3,655,000 twelve months previously, and that, although the fares were enormously raauced, the surplus remaining after paying all charges had increased 21 per cent. Formerly the Hungarian Railways did not pay now they are paying well, and at the same time render three times as much service to tho people. Herein is the lesson for thickly populated districts like South Wales: cheaper fares, more frequent trains, aud higher profits for the shareholders. If the zone -ystern camo into general use in in this country, we might evea see Cardiff and New- port stations thrown open. Otherwise, not this side the millenium may we expect abandonment cf the antiquated system which pens up coal- trimmers and ladies, little children and (some- tin,e3 drunken) sailors in a close passage-way, whilst each ticket is carefully scrutinized by the collector. All the resources and intelligence of the Groat Western Company are incapable of re- moving this nuisance. Sellers are offering :—Penrikybfir Preference Millers and Cory's Six per C,)nt.
