Owing to the ittOng continental competition for bills, the discount market is showing yet greater weskuess. ,At such a critical period as the present, when the Bank of England reserve and the stock of bwllion are so low, this falling j away of rates is fntieh to be regretted, as it is useless to keep the .official quotation at 6 per cent. J when the open market working rata is below that figure, Und&f' such circumstances, th& maintenance of exchanges cannot be carried out, I and the replenishment of our stock of bullion becomes almost an impossibility, except through J • the return of coin from circulation. Three months' Bank bills were dons. to-day at 41 to H, and six months' at 3i to 4- per cent. 4 Three months' trade bills were 4 to 5 per cent., and six months'4i to 4i per cent. St Petersburg thri-e inuuths' are 26 £ Firmer markets have been characteristic of tbe Stock Exchange. Speculation Is reviving, and there is a good deal of buying on conti- nental account. Almost all stocks have parti- cipated in the healthier tone, and should money continue to cheapen, speculation would, unques- tionably, revive in force. As it is, there is no dispositIOn to sell stock, and of the fall which accompanied the late advance in the Bank rate, a considerable portion has already been recovered. Great attention is now being bestowed upon mines. Consols closed at 97 to 97 xd for delivery, and 97 9-16 to 97 11-16 xn for iiccount; 21 per Cnt. (Cbilders'), 99i to 99i xd 2% uer Cane., 94-i to 95 xd. Local Loan block, 102f to 103a xd. Paris continues to hjiy, and tue market, so far as regards International issues, has continued strong. There were fair dealings in Egyptian Unified, which rose to 93, but receded later to 92 13 16. Spanish also were strong. Rumours of financial troubles, notwithstanding, it is difficult to depress this stock. To-day's final prices is i above yesterday. Italian were firm, and Hunga- rian and Russian hardened a little. Turkish sympathised with the firmness in Egyptian. Some issues rose i to In the South American Market Peruvians were strong, closing £ higher. Brazilian were firm. Scrip closed at 8 dis. Bneuos Ayres vèdulaswere steady. The feature of the English Railway Market was the revival of the demand for Brighton A, which is being purchased on dividend rumours. Some optimists are sanguine enough to expect 3 per cent., but it is more likely to be 8.t per cent. That will be a good dividend. South Eastern A closed at 106. Sheffield Deferred Stock was again in demand, and wan a i higher. This is looked upon, like Great Eastern, as a stock with a future before it. Hence its steady absorption, Heavy stocks scarcely varied, but were firm. Caledonian and North British were bath steady. Amongst Canadian Railways, Grand Trunks rallied a little, and left off at a slight improve- ment, Canadian Pacific Shares, on the other hand, were a shade weaker on a few- realisations, but the variations were insignificant in each case. American Railways were a firm market, but Denver issues were wanted, Preferences being specially strong. There was also an enquiry for Wabash issues. Eries, Atlantic's, and Louisville and Nashvilles were all steady but L:ake Shores and Chicago and Milwaukee were rather dull. Amongst Foreign Railways Mexican (Vera Cruz) were firm, closing rather better. Lombards were strong on Paris buying. In the Miscellaneous market Bank shares generally were steady. Nitrate issues were irregular. Liverpool fell 1. Primitiva rose 21. Guinness Ordinary was firm. London Produce Clearing House rose 1. There was more steadiness in the Mining Mar- ket. Copper Shares generally, and Rio Tinto in Particular, were stroug. In South Africans there was strong demand for Golq Fields and Do Beers, Rothschild's Exploration were steady. PARIS, Friday.-Tiio Bourse was very firm and business active, in spite of attention to-day being occupied with liquidation of account in foreign Btocks, shares, etc. Rentes for money and account rose 15c. to 25c. Contaneroes were easyi and at the close of business were 14c. on Italian; ltc. on the Ottoman Bank, 5fc. cn Suez Canal Shares, 41 per cent. on Egyptian Unified, 6c. on Turkish Stocks, 2fc. Xnrkisb Lottery Bonds; i per cent. on Spanish, and 4 per cent, on Hungarian Gold Rente. The tendency was good throughout, and advances in quotations were general. I The brigantine Czarowitz, of Plymouth, from Fowey for Runcorn, has sunk by collision with ,the steamer Britannic in Crosby Channel crew saved, but captain drowned. The steamer Rubens has arrived at Perim master dead. The steamer Smilesworth, from Shields for Venice, which went ashore on Owess Shoal, has been assisted off, making no water, and arrived at Spithead. The schooner Arno, from Ipswich, which went ashore on Redcar Rocks, was floated. on Friday. A Bastia telegram states that the steamer Persia has gone ashore and remains passengers saved captain and crew still aboard.

The country is mountainous, with but few roads that are even bridle-tracks. The people are described as very savage they use poisoned arrows with the bow and blow-pipe, and dispense almost wholly with clothing. They are said to be cannibals, especially in the more remote hills towards the Chinese frontier. THE BARRY DOCK AND RAIL WAY COMPANY. Mr G. C, Downing, secretary and solicitor to the Barry Dock and Railways Company, ba, written as follows to the Tiius:-Sir,-My atten- tion been directed to the article on ths Railway Programme for next SessionCOR, tained ifi your issue of the 27th ult., in which it is stated that "the Barry Company, not content, s with wnging a relentless war of rates, &c., is J seeking access to Cardiff and the Bute Docks," &c. ;-aftd as such statement is inaccurate and cal- I culated to- miblead persons at a distance interested j in this company and the district generally, I must ask you to be good enough to publish this letter ill your next issue, and thus enable the public to ascertain the true facts of the matter. Parliamentary sanction was given to this com- pany's undertaking upon the distinct understand- ing tiiitt-the rate for the carriage of coal for ship- ment would be a halfpenny per ton per mile, and | accordingly, when the undertaking was opened for pubGc traffic in July last, the rate charged was based upon this understanding, and, pursuant to the Parliamentary pledge of the promoters, was applied to small and large freighters alike. Thia halfpenny rate is little, if any. thing, lower than rates which have been charged by the Rhymney Company in competition with the TafrCompauy in the district for years past. It havitag been rumoured that the Taff Company proposed to cut the rates below the figure charged by this company, at the half-yearly meeting of shareholders held in August last,Mr David Davies (deputy-chairman of this company) distinctly stated in his speech (which was fully reported in the local papers) that this com- pany had not initiated and did not desire a war of rates, but that if the Taff Company commenced to cut ttie rates this company would tollow down to the level of, but would not go below, the Taff rate. Notwithstanding this most distinct warning the Tag Vale Company shortly afterwards re- duced their rate below that of this company, and we were therefore obliged in self defence to follow. It will thus be seen that it is the Taff Vale Com- pany, and not the Barry Company, who are waging a war of rates. It is not a fact that my company aro this Session seeking access to the Bute Docks.

A NEW BREWERY FOR CARDIFF. The tendency manifested of late years to work breweries on the limited liability principle is about to show itself in Cardiff, where a new company has erected a brewery on an open piece of land near the Great Western Railway. So confident are the promoters of success that they and their friends intend to retain one-half of the capital of the company, and offer the other half to the public. Few in Cardiff outside the rade knew that a large establishment of that kind was about to be opened so early as February next. A few days ago the Pall Mall Gazette published a list of persons who died during the past year, and wbo&e personalities ran up to six big figures, and the brewers, as in the past, held a high and, though the teetotalers would hardly admit it, honourable place. It is evident that making beer still pays enor- mously, whatever may be said aboul arinking it. Cardiff has been going ahead in the matter of docks and other public works, but its people have hitherto been content to consume, tc a great extent, beer made in Bristol, Burton, Edinburgh, and otherplaces. From the engineer's report we extract the following general descrip- tion of the new premises The sinking of the well, which was the first atep,wais successfully carried out,and an unlimited supply of good water obtained, the temperature of which even in summer does not exceed 52 dog. Far., and all the land springs and surface watet excluded. The foundations of the brewery were then sunk right through the clay to a soiid bed ol gravel. The trenches were about 14ft. below street level and about 4ft. wide, and filled in with a specially made c,ucrete to withiu 18, inches of the cellar floor level, so as to avoid any settlement. The brewery itself and the stack are altogether an imposing group of handsome design, and very strong and substantially built, the mortar used in the construction being com- posed of the local Aberthaw lime and bard burnt ashes, which sets almost equal to the best cement. The premises are built, with Doltings and Box Down stones and buff coloured brick dressings, filled in with hammer-dressed stone work, the different suloured specimens of granite and other stones being mixed and blended with great taste and good effect. There are hundreds of tons of copper work, iron girders, and joists, and pipes, &c., used in the building, all the principal joists being of British manufacture. The approach to the brewery is from Penartb-road, through Craw- shay-street. There are most convenient office arrangements, with fire-proof room for books &c., and a large board-room is provided on the first floor. The size of the land provides tor brewery, brewer's house, maltbouse) stables, cart- houses, &c., and is about li acres in extent, so that there is ample space fur any extention that may be required in the future.

EXCITEMENT IN THE IRON MARKET. On Friday there was a re-appearance of excitement in the Midland pig trade on receipt of the news of the sudden advances in Glasgow. Derbyshire and North- ampton Digs rose immediately to 75s and 77s 6d, and Lincolnshire to 80s. West coast hematites rose from 91s to 95s and Blaenavon best foundry hematites to B6 10s. The best Staffordshire hot-blast pigs went up to 90s, and cold-blast to £ b 10s and 95 15s. Common Staffordshire iron advanced to 65s, and other quota. tions were wholly withdrawn.
