The Merioneth Education Committee met last Thursday and transacted a considerable amount of routine business. Perbapa the one resolution of public importance was the decision to hand over all grants earned by the Voluntary schools to the managers of the schools. The passing of this resolution places the authority in line with the position taken up by the neighbouring county of Montgomery. But, aa was pointed out at the last meeting of the County Council, the grants will not be snnicient to supply all the financial needs of those schools, in fact, they .do not amount to enough to pay the salaries of the teachers, and it looks very much as if some of those unfortunate indi. viduals may have to do without their Christmas dinner. Not only the education of the children is to suffer, but the teachers are to be deprived of the money they have earned, because the County Coun. cil don't like the Act. It is absurd. If the Count) Council were not prepared to work the Act in its entirety, they should have refused to have anything at all to do with it. Then there would have been some consistency in their position. V The Towyn and Aberdovey District Council met last Friday, but the work before them was not of a very exciting nature. We are glad to find that the health of the district continues good, and the Medical Officer was able to report that no cases of infectious disease had been notified during Novem- ber, a month which is not usually regarded as the moat healthy of the year. The Sanitary Inspector and the Medical Officer together reported they had interested themselves in stopping some cirting ef soil from Pennal churchyard to a neld in the Council's district, and they were complimented for their action. We presume the idea was that soil from a churchyard might be infectious, but thb report is silent an the point, except that it states carbolic acid is to be used as a disinfectant. The financial position of the Council is encouraging, the monthly report showing a balance in the bank of .E326. The Council have been in communication with the Postal authorities with regard to the telephone service. They have been complaining about the sort of poles that are being put up to carry the wires, and, in the same breath, have been asking for increased facilities. It would, no doubt, be very nice if the Council cou!d indace the Post Office to erect ornamental poles, but it is very doubtful whether they will succeed. The better plan wou!d be to join with the officials in finding out-of-the- way places for the erection of the ordinary poles, and if that was done, we do not believe there would be any necessity to grumble that the poles were unsightly. The application for an extension of the free area baa not been successfu). It would undoubtedly have been a distinct advantage to the district if it could have been joined on to Newtown and Aberystwyth, but we are not surprised the application has been refused. Similar efforts have been made by other authorities on the new Mid- Wales system, but without success, though we do not think the inclusion of the whole of Montgomery- shire and Merionethshire in one district would have been out of the way. The area would have been large it is true, bat after all the population would not have been as great as in some districts which have a free circuit. There was an interesting gathering of farm era last week at the Corbett Arma Hotel, when the desirability of fermicg a farmers' club was dh. cussed. The meeting ended in the formation of a committee which may prove very serviceable. The idea is to get the farmers to join together for the purpose of purchasing lime, and other com- modities they require, so that by giving one big order they can get the material at a cheaper rate, and also get it carried on the railway at less coat pel" ton than is charged for small lots. Mr R. Gillart presided over the meeting, and Mr W. H. Gough, traffic superintendent of the Cambrian Railways, was present at the meeting, and both expressed a desire to see the idea successfully carried out. Mr Gough gave an assurance that his Company would do all that was possible to help farmers in this matter. We do not quite gather whether the formation of a Ctub is to be proceeded with, but we hope it will be. There are lots of questions a Farmers' Club could consider with advantage besides raitway ratps. It would tend to draw the members into closer unity, and become a power for the common good.

Recitations and addresses were given by members of the Guild. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. VOLUNTEERS.—The volunteer recruiting is brisk at Towyn. About twenty young men have recently joined the local Company. The reading room attached to the Armeury has recently been open and the young men are making good use of it. The men attend practices with the Morria tube and it is satisfactory to note improvement in the shooting. IMPROVEMENT SociEtT.—A meeting of the above society was held at the C.M. A SURPRISE PACKET.—On Monday evening considerable amusement was caused in the establishment of a wet! known grocer in the town. It appears that a humourous farmer insisted on "dumping" what was reported to be a sucking pig. The worthy shopkeeper's indignation was intense but he was moltined when he opened the sack to discover a black spanie). Unfortunately the dog proved to be the property of a noted Councillor. FooTBALL.—A match was played on Saturday on the Sandiianda ground, between the County School and Aberdovey. The weather being so rough the match was abandoned after aboat 40 minutes play, result bei&g County School 2 goals; Aberdovey ni). SUCCESS.—Amongst those who successfully passed the Moderations Examination for the degree of B.A. recently held at St. David's Col!ege, Lam- peter, is the name of Mr J. Fugh Jones, CHfton House, Bryncrug. We heartily congratu)ate him on bis success. Mr David Jonea, Erwporthor, is also a student at the above College, having matricu.ated last October. BNTHKSDA. IMPROVEMENT SociETY.—The weekly meeting was held on Monday evening, the Rev J. H. Williams presiding over a good attendance. The proceedings were of a competitive character. For the best bookmark the prize was awarded to Micx M. Evans, Marine Parade. A correspondent writes:—"What might have been a serious mishap took place a few days a.go in Brook Street, as a. cob attached to a light vehic'o was being driven round the corner of Maengwyn Street it collided with a heavy and "peppery" cart horse, which was bei-g led out from the ad. joining stables. The horse backed on its hind legs and had it not been for the skilful driving of the owner of the light conveyance wou)d have over- turned it, and the driver, pony and vehicle would have been thrown into the brook which runa parallel with this street. Many a cyclmt has ex. perienaed a ducking on t dark night in this brook. When the brook is Booded as it new is, it ia certainly a source of danger to traffic and young children. Why not pipe it ? It is covered over in part as it flows under the courtyard of the Armoury, through the main thorough-fare which leads to the terminus of the TaIyJIyn Railway, 'ihe District Council have made many minor improve- ments in and out of the town of late. Let us hope that the authorities will have the defect remedied. By the way, the Armoury ia open nightly, and many young men have joined the ranks of late. Why not make thelbuilding a little more attractive? Exteriorly, a little paint on the planked windows would dispel the opinion of viaitora <&c., that the old chapel is a haunted conventicle. Another ex. chapel (WesIeyM), is situate ctose by where many a sermon was preached, many a prayer oBered, and many hymns were Sung in times long gone by. There is a- fine market garden here, and the East End of the town should have the same attention bestowed upon it by the Local Authority, as is the case with improvements carried out Westward Ho."—The weather is still wet and stormy. The wind veers from south to west. Thausands of sea-guUa Cock landwise a,nd are certain hrbing- ers of wet and stormy weather.- Preparations are being made to hold the usual Plygain early morning service at St Ca.dvan'0 on Christmas morning." LtBENAL MEETING.—A meeting of the Liberal committee was he!d at the Market Hall on Wed. nesday evening, when Mr J. Maetblon Ja,mea was elected to the chair, there were also present: The Rev T. R. Jones, Messrs G. Evans, S. Edmunds, J. Whittaker, and the RovW. Wi)Iiams, local secre- tary. The Secretary read a letter which he had received from the Secretary of the Merionethshire Liberal Association, Mr Gutbrie Jones, Dotgeliey stating that the annua.1 meeting which was held at Towya, had decided that each district should nominate a date fer holding a. public meeting for the purpose of enlightening tbe electors on the question that was now before the country, and to arrange so that Mr Oamwnd Williams, M.P. for the county,
