DOLGELLY. PttiMRORK LKAGUE.— Under the auspices of the Primrose Ltpgue a fancy dress ball was held at the Public Rooms. A very large and fashionable assembly were gathered together, the dancing being thoroughly enjoyed by all. Some of the dresses were exquisite, notably those of ladies in the characters of Cleopatra, a Sbeperdess, Lady Teazle, Mephistophiles, Chef, John Chinaman, and a Knight of the Bath. Refreshments were provided bv Mr Davies, Criterion Restaurant, while the usual part of the programme was well sustained by a Quadrille Band from Wrexham. The success of the venture is very gratifying to the members of the committee. This consisted of Capt Bailey, Messrs H. Lloyd (N. & P. Bank), Bicknel!, G. Rowe, David Owen, L W Norton, Mrs Carnegie Williams, MiseesFinnis, Millard, C. Evans and B. Hughes (hon Eec). The room was tastefully decorated by Mr H. Parry Jones. CYCLIST VOLUNTEER INSPECTION.—On Saturday last the local cycle corps was visited by the Adjutant of the 3rd Y.B. R.W.F., Captain W. G. Braithwaite, D.S.O., and was exercised in attack practice and in rearguard work against an enemy represented by a number of returned South Africans. In the evening an entertainment was given at the Company's headquarters. Mr M. W. Griffith, Mus. Bac., kindly offered his services as accompanist and the programme, which was of a most varied and interesting character, went well from start to finish. A musical sketch was con- tributed by Mr J. R. S. Furlong, M.A.; songs by Mr J. Jones of Conis, L-Corpl. H. M. Ellis and Cyclists J. H. Lloyd and J. Owen; recitation by Cyclist R. E. Jones; step dancing by A. Williams, and instrumental selections were ably rendered by Sergt-Instructor Cox, Clr.Sergt Mills, Cyclist R. O. Williams, and Sergt Arnfield, who also gave a selection on the gramophone. Undoubtedly the greatest treat of the evening was the d net" Ex. celsior," sung by Messrs Harold Jones and Meirion Davies During an interval Capt G. W. Kinman gave a short lecture on the colours of the Royal Weigh Fusiliers. He explained the meaning of the various badges and inscriptions, and showed how the history of England for the last 200 years could almost be read from the list of battle honours borne by the regimental standard. Starting with the four great battles of Marlborough's campaign- Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudeoarde, aud Malplaquet- an account was afterwards given of th. til- ing incidents at, Dettingen and Minden, and of the long years campaigning in the Peninsula, though lack of time prevented a description of Albuera and Waterloo. The story was told of the capture of the gun at the- Alma, of The Soldiers' Battle," of Sebast&pol trenches, of the first Ashanti campaign of the regiment's deeds "on the road to Manda'lay." A touch of actuality was given to the account of the two recent honours, Pekin and South Africa, by the presence in the room of men who had helped to gain each of them.
