Dr Rowlands, Towyn, has resigned, his office of medical officer to the Abergynolwyn quarry. Dr Rowlands and his assistants have always been most attentive to the district in oases of illness, and on the other hand they have received nothing but kindness from the quarrymen. We under- stand that the cause of the resignation is pressure of business. The appointment of a successor is vested in the workmen, who, it is said, are striving to secure a medical man who will reside in the district. Of the advantages of this there can be no two opinions, but it remains to be seen if the district can support a medical man. The beautitul mansion called Hafodybryn, Llan- bedr, near Barmouth, the residence of Mr Samuel Pope, Q.C., has been sold through Mr Hugh Evans, Porkington terrace, Barmouth, to Mr Evan Thomas, Grosvenor square, Edgbaston, Birmingham, and Tynyberth Hall, Corris. Mr Thomas is a native of Anglesey, but is well known in this ccunty. His munificence has won for him great respect, and at the present time he is erecting a Methodist Chapel in his native county entirely at his own expense. Mr Thomas is a relative of the Rev D. Charles Edwards, the North Wales representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and Mr Llewelyn Edwards, Aberystwyth. It is understood that Mr Thomas will take up his residence at Hafody- bryn. From a report of Llwyngwril School Board we learn that the number of pupils on the books of the National School at Llwyngwril is five. Is this not a record ? The inhabitants of Pennal are taking steps to have a great public inconvenience removed. The recent decision of the Cambrian Railways Company prohibiting the public from using the bridge over the Dovey to go to Glandovey Station and for all other purposes is both a serious inconvenience to the public and a great lost to the company. The population of the district which makes use of the railway bridge is something like a thousand. On the one side the nearest station is Machynlleth, which is four miles away, and on the other side Aberdovey is six miles away, while Glandovey Station is quite near. As long as the public are forbidden to make use of the bridge they are in the tantalising position of residing near a railway station and yet being unable to use it. A petition is being numerously signed urging the Company to erect a siding to the bridge. This will in due time be presented to the Company, and we hope they will see their way to remove the cause of complaint. II< At the time of the Jwbilee celebrations, it will be remembered, in the parish of Llangelynin subscrip- tions were solicited towards procuring lamps for the parish. The appeal met with a hearty response, and the lamps were fixed in their present positions. Subsequently, however, at a parish meeting held at Llwyngwril, it was decided by a majority not to adopt the Public Lighting Act, and consequently the Parish Council has no right to levy a rate to- wards the lighting. In the Llwyngwril district the lamps are lit through voluntary contributions, but in the Arthog district darkness still prevails, and no attempts are made to remedy matters. The lamps are already fixed as stated above and it only requires a little effort to collect a sufficient sum to have them lighted. Cannot the Parish Council form itself into a committee and see the thing carried through ? Mr W. H. Preece, President of the Society of Civil Engineers, at the switching on of the electric light at Llandudno on Saturday night, said his belief was that local authorities who were em- powered to do so neglecced their duty to the rate- payers when they failed to supply their towns with well-regulated electric tramways and electrio light- isi installations.
