THE MARRIAGE TIE. T' VICAR OF PEMBROKE-DOCK AND DIVORCE. The vicar of Pembroke-Dock (Rev. D. L. Prosser), discussing divorce and the church in the Parochial Magazine, states :— "There is another matter, besides the obser- vance of Sunday, in which there are apparent signs of an increasing cleavage between the Church and the World; and that is in their respective views of the Marriage state. The World seems to be coming to regard it as merely a matter of contract between the two persons, which can actually be dissolved when they like. The Church holds fast the truth that it is Holy Marriage, a divine institution, the safaguard of the family, upon which human society itself is based she teacbes that the community, as well as the man and the woman, is concerned in the contract, and that by a solemn mystery they are no more two but one flesh.' It is with great concern that the Church views the tendency to weaken the marriage tie. At a great cost Chris- tianity drove out the curse of Polygamy; and she will resist to the last any attempt to re-introduce it. Fifty years ago the State took a. most serious atep in the direction contrary to the Christian standard of Holy Marriage as the Churoh upholds it. The Divorce Act was passed but the Church went on declaring that those whom God has joined together man may not put asunder. And since then there have been clear signs that the Church and the State have been going further and further apart upon this fundamental question. The Church stands where she has been from the beginning, but the State has become less Chris- tian. If, as some wish, the Church came down to the State's level she too would become less Christian, and her doom would be sealed. But the strain is becoming serious; and it is better to acknowledge that upon this subject we cannot agree with the State. The Bishop of Birmingham's suggestion to the Divorce Commis- sion is a weighty one; it is that all marriages should be made by civil contract, leaving the Church free afterwards to pronounce her benedic- tion upon the marriage or not. But that is not the end of the difficulty those who are living in what the New Testament calls adultery, must not claim a right to the Church's Sacraments until they have repented of their sin and renounced it. And in social life loyalty to our Lord, who gave us this law, will require us to shun the society of those who defiantly break it. It is not pleasant by any means; but that is just the share that we are each to take in upholding the sanctity of Marriage. It means that the Church and World will be becoming more separate; but there is nothing to regret in that. It will be no loss to her if now, far down the ages, she again goes through the experience of her first centuries. "There is no room here to set out the argu- ments at length, but merely to state the principles which guide us; and to urge the need of stirring the conscience of Christians upon this matter. This is the special value of the resolution passed by the Men's Society. Our men have shown us the true line upon which we are to go from that no Christian who is loyal to our Lord can turn aside. We do not want to force our views upon those who do not claim to be Christians, either in this matter or in the observance of Sunday. If they insist that the State must change its law to something further still from the Christian stan- dard, very well; England in that respect becomes so much less a Christian country. But that does not alter the unmistakeable law of God which His Church is charged to declare; that those whom He has joined together, no man can put asunder."

ENTITLED TO TENBY'S CONFI- DENCE. Anything that is again and again heartily endorsed by people is assuredly 0 entitled to Tenby's confidence. Week after week we read cases like the following, where neighbours speak out frankly and unreservedly in the hope that their experience may be the means of bringing relief to others. ° Mrs J. ANCIENT COAL WORKINGS AI." GEOLOGICAL SURVEY IN PEMBROKE- SHIRE. By the completion of the six-inch survey of Pembrokeshire the whole of the South Wales coalfield has now been covered. Mr H. H. Thomas, in completing the mapping of the car- boniferous tract between Newgale and Nolton Haven, finds that the lowest coal measures occur on the northern side of Newgale Marsh and are followed by a shale-series with the most impor- tant coals. These have been worked along the southern side of the marsh and in the West Hills, and probably at Simpson also. The highest measures strike parallel to the coast to the north of Nolton and contain several good veins which have been worked on the cliff, and at the Folly and Trevrane. They are associated with strong sandstones, and thus form a series differing from the sliale-series below. At Nolton also Mr T. C. Cantrill finds the lower or slialy group with several coal-veins, most of which have been worked in past times, to be succeeded by the same upper or pennant-like sandstone group, in which coals, though present, are less numerous. This group presents a general lithological resem- blance to the Llynfi Rock and Pennant of other parts of the coalfield, a resemblance noted in 1846 by De la Beche. A somewhat complex structure of the coal measures between Newgale and Nolton is noted by Mr Thomas. From Nolton north- wards the veins strike due north, but south of Chapel they turn abruptly eastwards towards Trevrane with a northerly strike, and after a. short course turn westward along the low ground towards Bathesland and the sea. At Nolton Mr Cantrill finds several important structural features affecting the carboniferous tract. In the first place the strong sonth-south-weaterlv dip which the Ordovician and Silurian rocks had acquired in pre-carboniferous time has made the unconformity at the base of the carboniferous rocks most conspicuous. One after another the outcrops of the older rocks in the old platform are overstepped by the millstone grit. But the plat- form having a slight declination southward, over- lap within the carboniferous series itself was set up.

PICTURESQUE VISITORS. 8 BRETONS IN PEMBROKESHIRE. The first cargo of Breton onions (writes a correspondent) has arrived at Haverfordwest, and already the visitors have penetrated to the remotest village and hamlet in Pembrokeshire. Picturesquely attired in smock frocks, the men and lads leave Haverfordwest every morning shortly after daybreak, and the clatter of vehicles and the tramp of heavy footsteps resound through the empty streets, to the accompaniment of merry voices speaking a language to which Pembrokeshire folk have grown accustomed. Although there are many privations, and sometimes men and lads have to walk many miles in a scorching sun laden with "hanks" of onions, they thoroughly enjoy these annual trips. The sun burnt faces of the Bretons indicate robust health, and they are able to cover enormous distances daily on foot. They are hard-working and industrious, and most of them are peasant proprietors who by dint of much saving are fairly well provided for the future. Each evening the crew settle" with the master, the work of keeping the accounts being generally undertaken by the landlord of a local inn. The boys, whose rosy cheeks, kindly eyes, and deferential manners, make them welcome callers at many a farm homestead and country cottage, learn to speak English fairly well. At least, they acquire enough of the language to enable them to drive excellent bar- gains. Owing to the partial failure of the winter crop in Brittany, the price of French onions this year shows an upward tendency, and up to the present the supplies are much below the average. Of recent years the Breton visitors, probably under the smiling sun of prosperity, have shown a disposition to dispense with some of their more clumsy accoutrements. The majority of them now wearing ordinary boots instead-of the heavy clogs hewn out of a block of wood, which blister feet and cause needless perspiration. On Sundays the visitors are astir at the usual early hour, and it is an interesting sight to see them, dressed in their best clothes, and gathered in groups, on the Old Quay, with the winding river at their feet, and near by the ivy-clad ruins of the church of St. Thomas of Canterbury. Here they remain until the church bells announce the hour of morning service.

103 YEARS OLD. —m i i—— WONDERFUL SOLVA WOMAN. MEMORIES OF THE FRENCH INVASION. Mrs Mary Hughes, of Nine Wells, Solva, Pem- brokeshire, has just celebrated her 103rd birthday. She was born just after the invasion by the French at Fishguard, when the countryside was still ring- ing with the stirring tales of the never-to-be- forgotten event. Her birthplace was Llanychaer, near Fishguard, not far from the little bay at Carrig Gwastad, where the French ships anchored and the nondescript army landed. She well re- members her mother describing to her and her ten brothers and sisters the startling scene, in which her mother took her part with the rest of the women of the district. Mrs Hughes shows every year of her age in her wizened appearance, but these furrows of time are all that denote her age. She has faculties of a much younger woman. Her hearing and sight are both good, and she still gets about the farm lands with wonderful alert- ness. The day the photographer paid her a visit she was out fetching the cows to be milked, and when one of them lagged behind she urged it on to good purpose. She descended several steps unaided, declining the proffered assistance of her visitor, and took up her position before the camera with alacrity. She had never been taken" before.

FISHING TRADE BOOM AT MILFORD HAVEN. 11- Immense strides are being made in the fishing trade in the Milford Haven ports, Milford and Neyland. Practically all the ketch-rigged trawlers hitherto landing their catches at Brixham, one of the oldest fishing ports in England, have now made the haven their market. Within the last nine months Neyland has experienced an in- creased trade of thousands of pounds value whilst Milford has had a good number of smacks added to its already large fleet. Most of the steam trawlers are doing well, but the smacks, whose catches fetch better prices than those of the steam trawlers, are having unprecedented prosperity. Several owners have recently placed orders for the building of new ketch-rigged trawlers, to be ready next spring. A number of Ramsgate vessels have also lately come to use the port.
