PHONOGRAPHIC LITERA-I TURE.
PHONOGRAPHIC LITERA- TURE. — I — ■ The Christmas Number of the Phonographic Monthly, edited by Mr A. Munro-Peebles, the well-known exponent of the Pitmanic theory of shorthand writing, is one of the most artistic productions in this line we have. yet seen. More than doubled in size, its contents are printed in a variety of soft tinted inks, the ornamental embel- lishment of the pages, and the get np" generally making the number a real work of the printer's art. As regard the contents of this issue of the Monthly, they are as varied and interesting as the colours in which they are presented, and all phonographers who can appreciate the acme of shorthand lithography should get a copy of this issue, which can be obtained for fourpence from Mr Munro-Peebles, Elgin, Scotland. The Reporters' Magazine for November, which is so enterprisingly edited by Mr T. J. Hallet, of Clevedon, Somersetshire, contains a special con- tribution from the pen of Mr Bernard de Bear, the well-known Principal of Pitman's Metro- politan School of Shorthand, on the ever-green subject of The Struggle for Speed in Shorthand," the same being accompanied by a facsimile of re- porting notes taken by Mr de Bear at the high speed of 203 per minute. Other entertaining fea- tures of the number are The White Horses of Wiltshire," Samuel Johnson," The Journalistic 'Special; and "The Governing Principles of Phonography." Under the same editorship and issued from the same office is the Shorthand Gazette, the November number of which is an ex- ceptionally bright and readable one. The Reporters' Journal, edited by Mr J. Herbert Ford, whose lithographic writing was warmly praised by the late Sir Isaac Pitman, comes to hand with a wealth of entertaining contents. The articles in the Journal are characterized by their utility to phonographers generally, and all those interested in the art should enrol themselves as subscribers to this excellent monthly.
A GOOD THING FOR TENBY.
A GOOD THING FOR TENBY. It is a good thing for Tenby that well-known residents do not hesitate to speak out frankly and unreservedly in the hope that their experiences may be a valuable guide to others. Mrs E. Goodridge, of "Southsea. House," Frog Street, Tenby, says :—" For some months I suf- fered with terrible cutting pains in my back my housework seemed almost too much for me be- cause of them. I was very short of breath at timers, and my health generally was bad-I was afraid I was becoming anaemic. My kidneys were much disordered, and I got into a weak state. Being advised to try Doan's backache kidney pills, I did so, and am happy to say they restored me to health. My back never pains me now I feel better generally, and can do my work and bend about without fear of pain. I consider Doan's pills are a splendid kidney medicine, and I give this testimony solely for the benefit of other sufferers. (Signed) Emily Goodridge." Doan's backache kidney pills are two shillings and ninepence per box, or six boxes for thirteen shillings and ninepence. Of all chemists and stores, or post free, direct from the Foster-McClellan Co., 8, Wells Street, Oxford Street, London, W. Be sure you get the same kind of pills as Mrs Goodridge had.
A BRILLIANT CHRISTMAS NUMBER…
A BRILLIANT CHRISTMAS NUMBER The contents of the sumptuous Christmas double number of the Windsor Magazine are ex- traordinarily varied and attractive, and include a long story of powerful interest by A. E. W. Mason, and complete stories by such important authors as Mrs Thurston, W. B. Maxwell, Eden Phillpotts, W. J. Locke, Mrs F. A. Steel, C. J. Catcliffe Hyne, Barry Pain aud Robert Barr, in addition to the opening chapters of a new serial novel, Bianca's Daughter," by Justus Miles Forman, which promise well for a repetition of the success.of those extremely popular Windsor serials, The Garden of Lies and The Quest." No fewer than fifteen finely printed coloured plates accompany the various articles, which in- clude a survey of the work of W. Denny Sadler, with fonr coloured facsimiles from the originals and seventeen reproductions from the famous etchings of his pictures, while further coloured plates are from masterpieces by Millais, George Hitchcock, B. W. Leader, R.A., Alfred Parsons, A.R.A., Lucy Kemp-Welch, Sigismund Goetze, George W. Joy, J. J. Tissot, and other distin- guished painters.
