PEMBROKESHIRE DOCTOR'S JOURNEY.
PEMBROKESHIRE DOCTOR'S JOURNEY. Dr. George Griffith, of Milford Haven, the chairman of the Pembrokeshire County Coun- cil, is known in the premier county of Wales as the man who saved the life of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. When Mr Lloyd George was just a year old his parents lived in a small farm- house called Bulpond, Steynton, near Haver- fordwest. It was while there in the winter of t'he year that the infant was laid aside with an attack of croup, which proved so severe that the future Chancellor's life was despaired of. A message was carried through the sleet and snow to the neighbouring town of Milford Haven in quest of Dr. Griffith. The doctor- then a young man fresh from the hospital- hastened back just in time to administer the necessary relief. There was soon a change for the better, and the life of the child was saved. Dr. Griffith, who is still hale and hearty, and a member of about a dozen public bodies in Pembrokeshire, relates the story with en- thusiasm. I never dreamt," he said recently, "that in saving the life of that little child as he lay unconscious in the wicker cradle on that farm hearth I was saving the life of one of our national leaders. The crow of the Bouca u were rescued and brought up Channel by the Salybia, which is now lying at anchor in Barry Roads. The Boucau is a vessel of 1151 tons gross register, and was built at Newcastle in 1882. She traded between France and Bristol ChrLnnA] ports. The ill-fated steamer was bound from Bordeaux to Barry. The Hahjbia left Cardiff coal-laden for Barbados on Monday evening. The crew were landed at Barry and came on to Cardiff. At a meeting of the Sanitary Committee of the Ten by Corporation, held on Monday after- noon, a communication was read from the Local Government Board, enquiring what the Town Council were doing with regard to the Western Outfall, and the Town Clerk was instructed to reply that the Council were at the present moment considering three schemes.-The Town Clerk reported to the meeting that he had re- ceived a printed letter from Mr J. It appears to be thought that a barrister with a knowledge of Welsh will have preference over any other. It is stated that Mr Ellis Griffith is not desirous of the position. Yesterday a fresh name was introduced, viz., that of Mr John O'Connor, M.P. The latter gentleman accom- panied the Lord Chancellor to Canada two years ago, and is the Anak of the House of Commons. He defended Jabez Balfour. Messrs. W. H. and F. J. Horniman & Co., Ltd., whose well-known teas are a household word, have just sent to the head-masters of public elementary and higher grade schools in England and VVales very attractive reward cards, depicting the boats used in various countries. In the series we observe our own lifeboat forging its way through a stormy sea, the stately gondola gliding through the canals of Venice, and the frail and fast-propelled canoe of the West African, and boats of other nationalities, all carefully drawn and prettily coloured. The aeries is a welcome addition to the young folks' album or scrap book, and will do much to interest and instruct. Many of our readers having boys at school will no doubt enquire for a set.
