A shark, of the bottle-nosed species, measur- ing nearly 6ft. in length, was caught by a Solva fisherman (Sam George) in his net this week. Several have been seen in the bay of late, which probably accounts for the scarcity of fish at present. Mr Owen Philipps, M.P., of Amroth Castle, will preside on Monday next at a banquet at White Hall Rooms, London, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the incorporation of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company by Royal Charter. The general meeting of the Tenby Miniature Rifle Club will be held in the Town Hall on Thursday, the 30th inst., at 8 p.m Alderman Leach has been asked to take the chair, and the Mayor will present the prizes to successful competitors. F. C. Davies, Tenby, the Welsh half-mile champion, who recently defeated B. R. Day, of Blackpool, has been matched to run Donaldson, of South Africa, at the Stadium, Johannesburg. Davies will leave for South Africa the third week in October. »M Mr Ivor Bowen, revising barrister, sitting at ] Neyland on Saturday, made inquiries as to who ] were the assistant-overseers for Neyland and Llanstadwell, and said it was nothing to him, ] but he had received a communication from the Local Government Board which prompted the question. Both the Lusitania and Mauretania always leave New York on a Wednesday, and they expect to arrive at Fishguard at noon on the following Monday. The Campania also leaves New York on Wednesdays, and is expected to reach Fishguard on the following Tuesday after- noon. Both the Caronia an& Carmania when they leave on a Saturday may be expected at Fishguard on the following Saturday morning. 00-0- An extraordinary rumour reaches me (says a political note writer in the Daily Chronicle) that the Marquess of Lansdowne may shortly resign the leadership of the Unionist party in the House of Lords, in which case Earl Cawdor would be chosen to succeed him. This startling development of the political situation is believed to be due to Lord Lansdowne's unwillingness to assume the responsibility for the rejection of the Budget. 000 The Blanche, the third scout cruiser of the Boadicea type, will be launched at Pembroke Dock-yard some time in October. After the launch, the Blonde, the fourth cruiser of the type, will be laid down in the same slipway. Messrs. Cammell, Laird, and Company have secured the contract for the machinery of the Blonde. The torpedo-gunboat Antelope is being sent round from Motherbank to Pembroke to be re-fitted for service as fishery protection. Mr Thomas Russell, of Dew Street, Haver- fordwest, house decorator, painter, and glazier, who died May 30th last, left estate of the gross value of JS1076 7s. 5d., of which the net perso- nalty has been sworn at J3749 5s. 6d. Probate of his will, dated 2nd June, 1906, with a codicil of the 20th June following, has been granted to Miss Jane Phillips, of 10, High Street, Haver- fordwest, and Mr Lewis Henry Thomas, wine merchant, of Castle Square, Haverfordwest. We are informed that the pressure of work at the Tenby Cottage Hospital since 1st June last has been very heavy. The daily average of beds occupied from 1st June to the 20th inst. has been 6'6 as compared with 3*8 in the same period last year, and the days in hospital 742 as compared with 421 in 1908. An unusual pro- portion of severe critical cases have been under treatment, and the consequent additional expense is a source of anxiety to the manage- ment. The restoration of the last ruined chapel of St. David's Cathedral is to be taken in hand at once. The buttresses are being removed, scaf- folding erected, and stones quarried for the parapet and coping, and before the year is out it is expected that it will be roofed in. Mr Edwin Thomas, who carried out so successfully the restoration of St. Nicholas' Chapel (Dean Howell Memorial), has charge of the work. The plans are being prepared by the cathedral architect, Mr Oliver Scott, of London. The death occurred on. Monday, after a long illness, of Lieutenant-Colonel William Price Llewellyn Lewes, J.P., D.L., of Llysnewydd, Henllan, Cardiganshire, and formerly of No. 10, The Croft, Tenby. The deceased gentleman belonged to one of the oldest county families in West Wales, and was a genial country squire, beloved by all his tenants. He took an active interest in the management of his estate, and devoted a great part of his time to public affairs, being a member of several local bodies. He was a Conservative in politics. As an old soldier—retiring as far back as 1882—-lie took a keen interest in the Territorial Force. -+, The Cunard liner Mauretania, which called at Fishguard on Monday for the second time, has again eclipsed all records for the Atlantic homeward passage (besides holding also the out- ward record), her time from New York to Queenstown being 4 days 13hr. 41min.-or 46 minutes less than was occupied on the liner's own previous best for the eastern trip, which was the fastest up to that time. Reaching Fishguard at 12.51 p.m., the Mauretania landed 1154 bags of mails, 250 passengers, and 1500 packages, the mails being transferred from the liner to the train in 24 minutes and the entire debarkation accomplished in slightly over an hour. Passengers who lunched in New York on Wednesday last were enabled to dine in London at seven o'clock on Monday evening. Mr A. W. Randall, "The Motor House," Warren Street, Tenby, has just introduced into the district a new and remarkable golf ball, which under the name of "Red Plus" possesses unique features for the golfist. For juveniles the same firm have placed on the market a golf ball under the name of the "Red Seal," which is excellent in all respects and is sold at Is. —- The South J Vales Daily Navs on Tuesday published photographs of Dr. Charles Mathias and Mr F. E. L. Mathias Thomas, prominent members of the Tenby Golf Club, and the runners-up in the South Wales and Monmouth- shire inter-club foursomes. Throughout the contest," says the writer, "they played capital golf, and in the final were only defeated by the narrow margin of 3 and 2 in a 36 hole match. Dr. Mathias learned the game as a boy on the links of the Tenby Club, and by the time he went to college had made such progress that in 1899 he played for Cambridge against Oxford. He was elected captain of the Tenby Club in 1906, and has rendered as excellent service to his club as an official as he has as a player. Mr F. E. L. Mathias Thomas also learned his golf as a lad on the Tenby course, but was not heard of in competitions until 1903, when he secured several prizes in Tenby, and in the same year played for his club against Glamorganshire. He competed at the Welsh Union meeting in 1906, and in 1907 at Porthcawl he exhibited remark- able form, winning the Llangattock bowl, Dun- raven cup. and Duncan shield, and as a result had his handicap reduced to plus three for the meeting.

YOUNG WOMAN CHARGED WITH THEFT. MAGISTRATES' MERCIFUL VIEW. At a special sitting of the Ten by Police Court, held last Friday morning, before the Mayor (Mr Councillor C. Farley), Mr J. Leach, and Mr F. N. Railton, a respectively dressed and well spoken young woman named Lily Harding, whose age was given as 22, was brought up ill custody on a charge of stealing a blue navy lady's skirt, value £1, the pro- perty of Mrs Sarah Jane Gregory, residing at No. 9, Edward Street, Tenby, with whom the accused had lodged. Mrs Gregory, the prosecutrix, sworn, said she missed her skirt about nine o'clock on the previous (Thursday) morning, and knew it was Lily Harding who had it because there was nobody else. When she missed it she went to Sergeant Thomas and gave information. Ac- cused had been with her a week on Wednesday. She last saw the skirt hanging in her bedroom OIl Wednesday, September 15th. The skirt now produced by the police was her's. Mr Leach—How do you know it is ? Mrs Gregory-I know my own skirt. The Justices' Clerk (Mr.G. Lort Stokes)—Are there any marks on it ? Mrs Gregory—A white mark on the band. It matches the jacket (produced). Mr Railton—How long has the accused lodged with you ? Mrs Gregory—A week. The Mayor-Alone, or was there anyone else lodging with her ? Mrs Gregory—No. You would not wish to have a better person in the house. By Mr Railton-She looked upon her as a really respectable girl. The accused when asked if she had any questions to put to the witness, broke down and cried bitterly. Mrs Gregory told the Bench that she did not wish to press the case against the accused. Police Constable Thomas Warlow (46), sta- tioned at Pembroke-Dock, stated that about two o'clock on Thursday afternoon, from infor- mation received that the accused was wanted on a warrant at Tenby, charged with stealing a navy blue skirt, the property of Mrs Gregory, he went in search of her, and found her in North Lewis Street, Pembroke-Dock. He charged and cautioned her in the usual way, to which she made no reply. After calling in at the Police Station, he accompanied the accused to her lodgings, where the skirt now produced was handed to him by her. The accused said she had no questions to ask the witness. In reply to the Clerk, accused said she pre- ferred to be dealt with summarily. The Clerk—Have you got anything to say why their Worships should not pass judgment on you ? Accused (sobbing)—Except that I have never done anything like it before, and I promise never to do it again. The Bench then retired, and upon returning into Court, ° The Mayor, addressing the accused, said the case against her was a very serious one but they believed it was her first offence, and they hoped and trusted she would never do such a thing again. The Bench believed that she gave way to a sudden temptation, and they were going to bind her over in the sum of j310 in her own recognizances to come up for judg- ment if called upon within six months. This merciful decision was greeted with ap- plause by those in Court.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS. PROPOSED EXTENSION OF THE CULVERT. ENGINEERS' PLANS CONSIDERED. MORE BYE-LAW INFRINGEMENT. The usual weekly committee meetings of the Tenby Corporation were held in the Council Chamber on Monday afternoon under the chair- manship of the Mayor (Councillor C. Farley).— The question of fixing one or two gas lamps on the road between the Slaughter-house and The Green was considered, and it was decided to re- quest the Gas Company to lay a main and pre- pare for one lamp, the position to be fixed by a Lightiug Committee which would visit the spot to-morrow (Friday) evening after seven o'clock. —Complaint was made that Councillor Wilfrid Rees had overstepped the boundary in erecting his new shop and dwelling house next to the Five Arches, and the Borough Surveyor was requested to report as to whether the plans passed by the Town Council had been adhered to, one Councillor remarking that this was another instance of trouble arising from the passing of plans without proper consideration, and he hoped in future all plans would be ex- hibited for leisurely inspection by members who wished to do so.—The Town Clerk next pro- duced three sets of plans for the extension of the present Culvert on the South Shore, sent in by the engineers invited by the Corporation to compete. A very elaborate and extensive set of plans was received under the noni-de-plume of "Simplex;" whilst "Civitas" also sub- mitted large and well-executed tracings and plans of two schemes. The third competitor, under the cognomen of "Ritec," also sub- mitted a scheme. After a long discussion, lasting quite an hour-and-a-half, it was resolved that the Borough Surveyor and Councillor W. H. Thomas consider the plans and specifications and submit a digest of same for the considera- tion of another meeting to be held at an early date, the plans in the meantime to lie in the Council Chamber for inspection by any rate- payer upon his applying to the Surveyor for facilities to do so.—The depositing of domestic refuse at the end of the Saltern houses was again brought up. a member present stating that he had that same morning seen a householder throwing refuse over the wall. The Borough Surveyor was requested to enquire into the matter and report further to the Council.—The Town Clerk read a most satisfactory letter from the Cunard Company offering to place official guides to Tenby in suitable parts of their pas- senger steamers, asking tll,at a number of copies be sent them, and suggesting as a quid pro quo that their line of steamers be given a suitable advertisement in future editions of the work. The owners of the Booth Line also wrote saying that they would be glad to display twenty-five guides if same were sent them. It was agreed that the Town Clerk should at once attend to the matter; and a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, Alderman Leach, Councillors Stokes and Mason were appointed to arrange for the publication of a new brochure or illustrated booklet suitable for distribution in the interests of the town generally. The Town Clerk stated that the Medical Ofhcer of Health asked for authority to prose- cute a lady who had permitted her child to risk conveying an illness to other persons, and details having been given, it was resolved that the necessary authority be vested in the Medical Officer of Health to prosecute if he considered such a course advisable.
