We regret to announce the deatfc of Mrs Hazell (mother of the late Mrs Wade, formerly of Tenby), which took place last week at her residence, 14, Hill Street, Newport The deceased lady was in her 85th year. Her hus- band, Captain Henry Hazell, was lost at sea in 1868, and she was left a widow with five children. There are only two children re- maining to mourn their loss-Mr Harry Hazell, the well-known secretary of the Newport Gas Company, and Miss Hazell, L.R.A.M., the ac- complished musical teacher. Mrs Hazell was a native of Swansea, and she came to Newport about 67 years ago to her brother's business, the late Mr Phillip John, who conducted a suc- cessful drapery establishment in Commercial Street. After the death of her husband, she opened a drapery business of her own in Com- mercial Road, which she carried on successfully for many years. She attended Sunday-school regularly for the long period of about 70 years, and was most enlightened in Biblical knowledge. When she had accomplished 60 years as a Sunday-school scholar, a beautifully-bound hymn book was presented to her by the Ebenezer Sunday-school, which she kept as a valuable prize. C. Davies, Tenby 600 yards, for a stake of £40. A month ago Davies defeated Day in a half-mile race on the same ground. Davies is acknowledged as one of the best half- milers in the country, and Day is a good 600 yards man. In addition there will be a 120 yards open handicap. .t. A well-known Tenby citizen (says the South Wales Daily News) while on a visit to a certain town on the North Wales coast, was given a bed that was rather hard. Being accustomed to a feather bed his night was somewhat restless. A friend of his, hearing of his plight, penned the following englyn :— Rhy galed ydyw'r gwely-a garw I'r gwron o Tenby Le blwng heb wely o bly' Dylotted yw ei letty. At Pembroke-Dock Petty Sessions on Satur- day a summons against William Henry Collins, landlord of the Three Crowns Inn, for having kept his house open for the sale of drink, was dismissed. In this case the police evidence was that six men were found on the premises. The defence was that the men were guests, who had been invited to supper, in support of which evidence was called to show that a written iu- vitatiou had been previously sent to some of those present. Mr F. S. Reed, solicitor, Pem- broke, represented defendant. e A pretty wedding took place recently in the quiet village of Ambleston, Pembrokeshire, the contracting parties being Mr Lewis David Griffiths, Priskilly Forest, Letterston, and Miss Ann Davies Kennedy, only daughter of Mr Thomas Kennedy, of Woodstock, Abbotsford Ferry, Selkirkshire. A singular coincidence was that the wedding took place on the bride's birthday, which was also the bride's father's birthday, and on the anniversary of the mar- riage of the bride's parents and grandparents, which took place on the same date exactly 28 and 58 years ago respectively. Mr Ivor P. Nicholson, writing from Good- wick, sends the following to the Western Mail with reference to the recent anti-Budget meeting at Tenby :-In your issue of to-day I notice you report a speech of Sir George Armstrong's at Milford Haven. In that speech I see he said that at Tenby, in an anti-Bndget meeting, a great deal of rowdyism prevailed, and that "the agitation was led, not by an in- habitant of Tenby, but by a noisy individual named Clements, of Henley on-Thames." Will you allow me to correct this statement? I happened to be at that meeting, and the "noisy" individual was Alderman Clements, J.P., of Henley-on-Thames, a man, I should say, over 60 years of age, and all that gentle- man did was to ask two extremely sensible questions, and when the crowd demanded a- speech from him he gave three cheers for Mr Lloyd George. What part Alderman Clements took lie took in an extremely gentlemanly manner. Mr E. A. Ridsdale, the Liberal M.P., for Brighton, who is well-known at Tenby, having a^ country seat at Waterwynch, in the House of Commons last week asked the Prime Minister whether the Government had consulted any professional land surveyors or land agents as to the cost of valuing the whole of the land of the United Kingdom and if so, whether any of the gentlemen consulted had had any particular ex- perience in the valuation of land on the assump- tion that it was deprived of the improvements attached to it and if so, whether he would lay before the House a summary of the information received from these gentlemen, including any records they might have communicated to the Government of actual sales either by private treaty or public action of site values as defined in Clause 14 of the Finance Bill. Mr Hob- house in reply said :-The answers to the first and second parts of the question are in the affirmative. As regards the last part of the question, my right hon. friend does not see his way to accede to the suggestion.
TENBY COUNTY SCHOOL. --4'....
TENBY COUNTY SCHOOL. --4 After the long summer vacation the Tenby County School re-opened for the autumn term on Tuesday, when the complement of scholars in both boys' and girls' department was well up to the average. Under the able head mastership of Mr J. W. B. Adams, M.A., who has been in charge of the school from its foundation and opening, twelve or thirteen years ago, the Tenby County School has experienced a most successful educational career, the distinctions obtained by its scholars in the various exami- nations being as gratifying as they are remark- able. Such results are eloquent testimony to the soundness of the teaching given by the staff, and prove how carefully the curriculum is regarded. The school premises, as our readers are aware, have during the last few years, been improved and added to so liberally that as an educational establishment the Tenby County School occupies a foremost position in Pem- brokeshire, and has on more than one occasion topped the list in the way of examinations passes. Its equipment all round is highly satis- factory, and the "tone" which prevails is calculated to make for the moral as well as the intellectual improvement of the scholars.
