A RIVER OBSTRUCTIOX. While the Borough Committee's report was under consideration, Mr Rowlands asked if the committee had gone into the matter of removing the rock from the bed of the river near Hanover Quay. Mr T. H. Thomas replied that the com- mittee considered the work so very expensive that, in view of the financial position of the borough, they considered that they were unable to carry it out. Mr Rowlands pressed for further information as to the expense, and argued that in the interests of the town it was desirable to remove this rock. A local gentleman, who had had a great deal of experience in blasting work, told him that he would be prepared to accept the contract for JE15. Now was the time to proceed with the work before the high tides of the winter. Replying to Mr Llewellin as to whether the river would be more navigable owing to the removal of this rock, the Mayor said that was not exactly the point. At the present time many vessels came in contact with this rock, with the result that the cargoes were considerably damaged. Of course he was not in a position to say whether the Corporation was responsible for that damage. He did not think it was, but it was to the interest of the port-of the trade and commerce of the town-that the river should be made as navigable as possible. There was no doubt that this was the most dangerous ridge in the river. Eventually it was decided that the surveyor should prepare specifications and that tenders for the removal of the rook should be invited.
