LOCAL SIFTINGS. The Caronia- belonging to the Cunard Line, will call at Fishguard on Saturday. Tenby County School will re-open for the autumn term 011 Tuesday, September 14th. —— The BELGRAVE HOTEL, Esplanade, Tenby, is now open with ^very convenience and accom- modation for visitors. off Mr Owen Philipps, M.P., will open the Tenby Congregational sale of work, to be held in the Public Hall next Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock. I. During the present week there has been quite an exodus of visitors from the town, large numbers leaving each morning by the ten o'clock London fast train. V+o Mr W. H. Thomas (hon. secretary of the Tenby Fire Brigade) requests us to state that Fireman John Richards is authorised to receive subscriptions on behalf of the brigade. Visitors to Llandrindod Wells should write for particulars to Miss HURST, "ROSSLARE," LLANDRINDOD WELLS. Best position. Newly furnished. Every comfort. Terms very moderate. 000 The Great Western Railway Company, as will be seen by their advertisement, in another column, announce a special excursion to London from Tenby on Friday, September 10th, for two or five days. An "aquatic trial of skill" took place this time one hundred years ago, when thirteen Brixham fishing smacks sailed round Caldey Island for a silver cup given by Sir Charles Morgan, Bart., of Tredegar. At the Tenby Police Court on Monday morn- ing, Walter Homer Shaw, of the Thorn Poultry Farm, Manorbier, who did not appear, was fined 5s. and costs (8s. 6d.) for riding a bicycle without a light at 12.15 a.m., on August 26th. Police Constable William John proved the case. A complimentary benefit concert to Mr Wil- frid Harvey, the popular conductor of the Tenby Promenade Band took place at the Assembly Rooms last (Wednesday) evening, when the audience enjoyed an excellent pro- gramme exceptionally well rendered. Upon the application of Mr Oliver Bancroft, school attendance officer, the Tenby magistrates on Monday morning allowed a summons against Mrs Theo Mathias, of Sion Cottage, Tenby, for failing to send one of her children to school, to be withdrawn, Mr Bancroft stating that the defendant and her family were leaving the town in a fortnight. At the Tenby Police Court on Monday morn- ing the transfer of the license of thetreorge Hotel, granted temporary to Mr Owen Davies, was made permanent on the understanding that the licensee would at the next court produce the agreement as between himself and the owners, Mr Davies, in reply to the Bench, stating that he was going into the house as manager. Anniversary services in connection with the Tenby Wesleyan Church, will be held next Sunday morning and evening, when the preacher will be the Rev. John H. Newby, of Carmarthen. In the afternoon, commencing at quarter-to-three, a special service will be held. The collections during the day will be devoted towards the Chapel Trust Fund. 0 An order of 3s. 6d. a week was made by the Tenby magistrates on Monday morning against George Allen, a butler, of Lawrenny, who was summoned by Ann Matthews, a single woman, of Park Terrace, Tenby. Mr G. Meyrick Price, solicitor, Tenby, appeared for the complainant, while Mr Lawless, solicitor, Pembroke, repre- sented the defendant, who was stated to be in receipt of S20 a year as wages, and at the pre- sent time to be away in Norway. Mr Charles Aldington, assistant superin- tendent of the Great Western line, who has been over to New York for his holiday, and returned in the Mauretaniu, when spoken to on the subject of Fishguard as a transatlantic port, said that great as is the interest displayed in the Fishguard route by the general public in this country, it is more than equalled on the other side. Possibilities of all kinds are being worked out, not only for the benefit of the English travellers, but also for the Continental ones. The annual Puppy Show in connection with Mr Seymour Allen's Hunt, took place at Crea- sely, on Monday, when seven couples were "walked." The usual luncheon followed, at which various speeches were made. »♦< F. C. Davies, of Tenby, writes as follows in the importing Chronicle :—In answer to B. R. Day's challenge to run me over 600 yards, for £25 aside, at Pontypridd, I am quite prepared to run him a match over that distance, providing I do not get a reply to my challenge to run any- one over half a mile within ten days." The Pearl Insurance Company's staff in the Pembroke-Dock and Tenby District, numbering oyer twenty, had their annual outing at Manor- bier last week, when a very enjoyable time was spent, among those present being Mr Rees Lewis, general superintendent from Swansea. The catering arrangements were satisfactorily carried out by Mrs John, of Manorbier. Meeting at Kidwelly last Thursday, the Pem- brokeshire and Carmarthenshire Otter Hounds had two exciting runs, the first lasting 25 minutes and the other an hour and 40 minutes. In the first run a bitch otter was killed, and a dog otter, weighing 271HS, in the second. On the previous Monday the same pack met in Carmarthen for the Gwili, and after two excel- lent runs killed a brace of otters. At Saturday's run an old dog of 251bs was killed. We hear that the contract for 600 cases of soap for the Egyptian Department of Public Health has been secured by Messrs. John Knight, Ltd., of London, whose advertisement is on our fourth page. The tender originally specified that Messrs. Lever Bros.'s Sunlight Soap should be quoted for, but, after representations made by the British Chamber of Commerce, the autho- rities consented to make it an open competition subject to analysis, with the result that Messrs. John Knight's "Quickwasher" Soap was found to satisfy all the requirements and secured the contract. Mr S. F. Edge, the well-known motorist, who had come over by the Mauretania, told a Press representative that he was delighted, and all the passengers were delighted, with the new arrangement. At the start of the voyage, he believed, not many of the passengers had decided to land at Fishguard, but before the end many of the first-class passengers were for the Welsh port. Compared with the passage via Liverpool, Mr Edge considered Fishguard infinitely superior. It seemed so ridiculous after fast ocean voyages to waste so much time at Liverpool. Predominating as it does so conspicuously at Teuby, "mixed bathing" is just now a topical local subject, and apropos of the same a corres- pondent has been good enough to favour us with the following paragraph Miss Helen Mathers, the novelist, laughs at the notion of mixed bathing being immodest. I see nothing harmful or indecorous in it,' she said to a Press representative. 'France, in this matter at any rate, provides an admirable example, for in almost every family you find that from the parents down to the youngest child they all bathe together in healthy happiness. The line of sex division is too harshly drawn in this country, and the results are often deplorable. After all, men and women are but 4 brothers' and 'sisters,' and it is when they are brought together under restrictive conditions which amounts to suspicion that evil is done."

Luncheon was provided at Pumpsaint, the excursionists being met by Sir James Hills-Johnes and Earl Roberts. Sir James invited the party, 100 in number, to Dolocouthi, and on the lawn a photo- graph was taken of the visitors and the house party. The latter included—with Sir James and Lady Hills-Johnes and Mrs Jobnes-Earl and Countess Roberts, Lady Aileen Roberts, Miss Bingley Violet Ramsey, Miss Oldfield. A vote of thanks was accorded with enthusiasm to Sir James Hills-Johnes and Lord Roberts, both of whom acknowledged the compliment on behalf of themselves and the ladies.
