PEMBROKE-DOCK SCHOOL BOARD.
PEMBROKE-DOCK SCHOOL BOARD. The monthly meeting was held in the board-room, Pembroke-Dock, on Friday evening, the Rev. William Evans, M.A., (chairman), presiding. A scheme for higher grade education was submitted by the Rev W. H. Parr on behalf of the committee appointed to consider the subject. The committee recommended—" (1) That in all boys', girls', and mixed departments under the board two specific subjects be taught; that for girls domestic economy must be one, the other subject at the choice of the head teacher. (2.) That the recess in Albion-square School be converted into a laboratory and class- room for higher grade teaching. (3.) That an assistant master, qualified to teach the higher grade subjects, be advertised for." A financial scheme was also submitted, showing that with re-adjust- ment of staff and additional grants earned, the total extra costs of the higher grade department to the rates might be kept within about JE45 per auunm. It was decided that each member be provided with a copy of the report. The question will be decided at the next meeting of the board. The provisions of the Welsh Intermediate Education Act were discussed, and it was pointed out that the Act directed the appointment of a joint education committee by the county council, empowered to draw up a scheme for the establishment of inter- mediate schools. It was also stated that the Act allowed the founding of scholarships, and that a small endowment once belonging to the defunct Pembroke Grammar School might perhaps be recovered and applied to the same purpose. A committee, consisting of Revs W. Evans, W. H. Parr, D. Bowen and S. Allen, and Mr Caird, was appointed to bring the matter before the next meeting of the county council to secure the establishment of such a school in the borough of Pembroke to serve the southern portion of the county.

Sir Edward Watkin, M P. — whose Tunnel scheme failure should have cooled his ardour-bas now started a com party under the title of "The Tower Company, Limited," with a capital of £ 200,000. The tower which Sir Edward and his friends project will be taller than the Eiffel. It is intended to construct it entirely of steel, and to rear it to the astounding height of 2000 feet. By the way, it was Mr Trevithick who was the origi- nator of these tall towers, which threaten to be- come a sort of epidemic, for I learn that New York is anxious to possess one, and we may be aure before lon- other Babel Structures will spriag up In various parts of the world. When the Reform Bill was passed in 1832 Mr Trevithick proposed that the event should be fommernoratpd by ti tower 1000 teet high. One was a Latin-shaped cross, made short but wide, with exceedingly thick, close-set covering of purple asters. Mr James Albery's funeral took place last Tues- day week at Kensal Green. A large number of the friends of the deceased, including many members of the theatrical profession, attended to pay the last tribute of respect to one of the most brilliant and one of the most disappointing dramatists of our day.
