LOCAL AND OTHER NOTES. -....-
LOCAL AND OTHER NOTES. I heartily sympathise with the residents in Tudor Square who complain of the nightly nuisance caused by children assembling there and turning the thoroughfare into a public playground. So intollerable has this become that one gentleman assures me he is unable to do his professional work in consequence of the noise and interrup- tions caused by the urchins. Surely it is highly necessary that pressure should be brought to bear upon those in authority and responsible for order in the streets, that conduct so reprehensible should be no longer tolerated. At one time the nuisance occurred only on those occasions when street preachers and singers took up their quarters there; now as I have before said, it is of nightly occurrence, and carried on with a persistency urchins are only capable of. It is a matter of importance to those who reside in the neighbourhood that the present evil should not continue, and the Town Council would only show that they are desirous of putting an end to it if they took the matter up. At present the only wide thoroughfare in the town is the happy hunting ground" of all the stray mongrels of the town in the morning, and of street arabs in the evening. ■ i • Saundcrsfoot has been having a gay time of it during the last week On Saturday a very large number of persons crowded into the place to wit- ness the annual Regatta, which was more than usually successful this year by reason of a larger number of entries, and consequently an extended interest. The" authorities "-(who they are I do not pretend to know, but they are certainly a go- ahead party)—threw an amount of energy into the whole affair that ought to wake up the Tenbyites to a sense of their responsibility in the way of pro- viding amusements for the large number of visitors who have recently taken up their residence here. Yesterday an immense crowd gathered in the pretty neighbourhood of Coppit Hall to witness a well-arranged programme consisting of athletic sports and pony and cart-horse races. Like the regatta this was thoroughly successful, and al- though it was the first attempt at anything in the way of horse racing in the neighbourhood, if I mistake not it will hardly be the last. The pro- moters have evidently discovered the right thing to I do both in the way of attracting visitors to, and retaining those already sojourning at, Saunders- foot. The weather on both days was beautifully- fine, and this added not a little to the attractive- ness of the sport. Admiral Mayne, M.P., has returned to town for a brief spell, and on Tuesday visited the House of Commons, but, having paired with Mr Bowen: Rowlands for the remainder of the session, he took DO part in the business. The gallant admiral has been a witness of some of the most remarkable incidents of the naval manceuvres. He was afloat in H.M S. Conqueror, and his observations from that vessel lead him to speak with enthusiasm of the practical value of the operations in which our Navy is engaged. In conversation with the admiral I ventured to congratulate him on his success in inducing the Admiralty to place the headquarters of the defending fleet at Milford. "Yes," he answered, modestly, u I hope that has put a few thousands of pounds into the place." A I venture to think that all lovers of the chase in the counties of Carmarthen and Pembroke, will be gratified by a knowledge of the fact that the famous Maesgwynne pack of foxhounds, so long kept up at the sole expense of the late Squire, will not be lost to the counties. They have passed into the hands of a thorough sportsman and popular M.F.H. Mr W. J. Buckley of Penyfai, who will hunt the Carmarthen Country in future. Old Tom will still keep his position as huntsman and Evan Rees that of whip. It is expected that the kennels at the Traveller's Rest," a well-known hostelery on the Carmarthen Road, will be utilized. The amal- gamation of the joint packs of Maesgwynne and Penllergare will make one of the finest packs in the kingdom. I am reminded by announcements on the walls that Mr F. E. Wade will give his twelfth annual concert in the Royal Asse:, bly Rooms on Monday next. He will be assisted on the occasion prin- cipally by the Band of the 46th Regiment, who will play several stirring selections from great com- posers, for which they have gained distinction in the garrison towns of England. It is hardly nece- ssary therefore to remark upon the merits of the Band; they are widely known and highly appre- ciated by lovers of high class music wherever they have performed. Mr Wade will be assisted by Miss E Jenkins, RC.M. and other well-known artistes. The concert consequently promises to be a success numerically; I hope it may be financially. Mr Wade is always willing to lend a helping hand in providing amusements, and it would be satis- factory to him to know his efforts are appreciated. TATTLER.

AWFULLY SUDDEN DEATH AT LA WREN N Y.—On Tuesday evening Mr Edwin John, chief htud groom to Mr F. Lort Phillips, Lawrenny Castle, died very suddenly. He was taking tea with his wife when he suddenly fell down and expired immediately. Dr E. A. Saunders, Pembroke Dock, was soon in attendance, but of course his services were of no avail. The cause of death was the rupture of an aneurisn. The deceased was 36years of age, and had only been married a short time. He had been stud groom to Mr Lort Phillips for 14 years, and officiated in that capacity when Mr Phillips hunted the Warwickshire hounds. Deceased was a most inoffensive man, and was respected by all who knew him. Up to the moment of his death, he appeared to be in robust health. The marriage of Mr H. T. Anstruther, M.P., second son of the late Sir Robert Anstruther, M.P., and the Hon. Eva Hanbury Tracy, eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Sudeley, took place on Saturday at the church of St Columba, Pont-street. In consequence of the recent indisposition of the bride, the ceremony was strictly private, only the nearest relatives of both families being present. Lord Sudeley gave his daughter away, and Mr Erskine, of Cambo, acted as best man. Immediately after the ceremony Mr and the Hon. Mrs Anstruther left town for Spa.
