JOTTINGS. --
JOTTINGS. My compliments to Sir Kenneth Kwnp on his ext-ll^nt matagftuent of his company 0: amateur sicfors at Norwich on Tuesday. I have rarely seen Uif Upper Crust better played Let me give the. nanus of the amateurs—Mr. L G. Tre- vor, Mr. Wilmot Vaughan, Major Blyta, Mr. W. P. Eversley, and Mr Edmund Bourke. and Mrs. Stuart, Miss Aveling, and Mrs. Follet Synge. I looked in at the Princesa'a on Thursday night, and was much pleased with the very excellent performance of \)r Burnard's drama. Pryor. Those who saw the play at the Adelphi twelve years ago, with a cast composed almost entirely of leading actors and actresses of the day (some of whom are dead, and others little heard of now), will be able to draw a very favourable cumparison with the present interpretation. Miss Grace Hawthorne not only looks charming, but acts with much power and pathos, whilst Messrs. J. H. Barnes and W. H. Vernon are able exponents of the parts of "Pierre" and "Lazone" respectively. Go and see Praof while you have the chance, if you enjoy a really clever drama well acted The Opera Comique has been taken from Sep- tember 21 for the production of a new romantic opera entitled The Castle of Como, with music by Mr George Cockle, Mus. Bac., Oxon. The story is founded on Lord Lytton's play The Lady of Lyons. I announced some weeks since that the decora- tors were hard at work on Drury Lane Theatre. The beautifying process is now approaching com- pletion, and in less than a month the National Theatre will again be at the service of the piay- going public. Saturday, the 21st September, is, I believe, the precise date fixed by Mr Augustus Harris for the re-opening. The success of the Armada has probably determined the enterprising manager to try his fortune once more with the historical drama. Tbe rousing times of Round- heads and of Cavaliers, and the fugitive adventures of Charles II. after Worcester, will supply the groundwork of the new play which will be pro- duced at Old Drury next month, and which has been written by Mr Harris himself in collaboration with Mr Henry Hamilton. I hear great accounts of the scenery, for which Messrs. Caney and Dayes are responsible, and you may be sure that the costumes will be historically correct as well as aasfheticaliy unimpeachable since they are of Mr Lewis Wingfield's designing. Messrs. Henry Neville, Harry Nichols, Arthur Dacro, and Luigi Lablache are among the actors, and Miss Winifred Emery and Miss Julia Neilson among the actresses engaged, 11 V, We shall not have the pleasure of seeing Mrs Langtry in Mr Grundy's Bather Sandraz as soon as we expected, for she has had to go to Aix-les- Bains to cure herself, so it is said, of a bad attack of gout. After this, who will be ashamed to admit having attacks of this generally-concealed malady? On the contrary, it ought to become quite a fashionable one, and entirely supersede measles, which is now all the rage. Prince Alexander of Battenberg was said to have ruined his career when he made that mesal- liance we all wot of It now appears that onr condolences were premature. Those who detected in the attentions of Francis Joseph a kindness for the adventurous Prince Charming whose sway over Bulgaria was so brilliant and so brief did not reckon without their host. It has been announced that the Prince is to receive the command of an Austrian regiment in Syria. There is time enough yet for him to be lucky in both love and war. "Some are burn great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." The Shah has conferred the grade of Officer of the Order of the Lion and the Sun upon M. Honcke, director of the Paris Hippodrome. His Majesty has been extremely liberal in distributing this exalted order, more or less worthily, and its officers are now to be met with in every town he has visited, whilst perhaps even as numerous are the proud possessor of the portrait of the Son of the Sun. Lest my readers should be misled by the an- nouncement made in a contemporary that the Shah before leaving Paris purchased "a railway," let me state that his order was not so extensive. It simply consists of a miniature train similar to the one running in the grounds of the Exhibition. His Majesty took a great fancy to it, and as money is no object to him commissioned the manufacturers not only to make his carriage extra luxurious, but to go to Persia to lay down the lines in the gardens o! the Imperial Palace at Teheran. As a specimen of a sensational storv of a peculiar kind, I know nothing better than Mr Brittoffe Skottowe's Sudden Death. (Swan, Son- nenchein and Co.). It is full of murders com- mitted by a fascinating fiend in petticoats, who eventually ends her poisonous career in a tragic and very original manner. A less skilful writer would have failed in rendering this weird tale interesting, for candidly the plot is just a little improbable. Mr Skottowe, however, writes well, often with genuine power, and it is difficult to put the book down until finished. But prythee, ner- vous reader, read it not by night. The conse- quences might be disastrous, and horrid dreams disturb thy peaceful slumbers. I am glad to hear that Mr Frank Marshall is mending fast. His attack of gout and jaundice has been a very severe one, lasting over half a year. His stay at Farnham has, however, done him a great deal of good. Thanks to the tonic breezes from the Surrey hills, he feels an accession of strength almost every day, and is looking con- fidently forward to an early resumption of his professional duties. w.
