NARBERTH V. ST. CLEARS. These clubs played a match at Narberth on Satur- day last, St Clears battled first, R. L. Thomas and W. C. Thomas opening the innings to the bowling of L. P. Jonis and Duckfield, and with 9 up Jones bowled R. L. Thomas. David went in and a stand was made, when the total reached 32. David was caught by Neville. J. S. Thomas took his place, but was soon dismissed when R. Bowker went in and another stand was made ultimately with 53 up. W. C. Thomas was bowled by Jones after putting together 22 in good style, R. Bowker played well but unfortunately was run out, Carver also played well, but the others did not do so well. Narberth started with L. P. Jones and Dr. Mc'Culloch at the wickets, to the bowling of Jason Thomas and R. L. Thomas with the exception of Jones and Duckfield none of the others did anything worthy of wlte. Jones was caught by J. S. Thomas after putting together 27; he was badly missed by W. C. Thomas at 5 and again by J. S. Thomas at 18, from the bowling of Jason Thomas. Duckfield played steadily for 14 and carried out his bat. The follow- ing is the score SAINT CLEARS. ALLEGED INHUMANITY BY GLAMORGAN- SHIRE POLICEMEN. It is stated that Mr D. Randell, M.P. haa threatened to call attention in Parliament to a case heard at Swansea Police-court on Saturday, in which he considers that the county police behaved in an inhuman manner towards two young men for whom he appeared. It was the case of John Williams and Benjamin Williams, two tin-plate workers, charged with throwing stones at the police at Pontardulais on August 3. It appeared from the evidence that the police had to cope with a larga and excited crowd, and they had to "run in" the two defendants. In cross-examination they did not deny that one of the prisoners was kept in custody from Saturday till Monday and that his rug was taken away from him and the ventilators of the cell left open. The prisoner alleged, in addition, that Police-constable Letheren had a grudge against; him because the Pontardulais reporter had called attention to Letheren's conduct; that the constable made use of bad language, and that he (prisoner) was handcuffed and taken through the streets like a felon. The Bench dismissed the case, as itwa not clearly proved that prisoner threw stones.
BARQUE RUN DOWN BY A SHIP OF WAR. A letter has been received from H.M.S. Active giving an account of a disastrous collision. Tha writer says :—About 20 minutes after midnight wo were steaming at between seven aud eight knots., towing H.M.S. We had fore and aft sails set when we struck a German barque, the Ems. bracht, just abaft the the mainmast. We imme- diately went full speed astern, and drew clear, A sail had been reported first on the port, and then on the starboord bows, and afterwards right ahead. The skipper of the barque says he saw us a quarter of an hour before we collided, and when he saw a collision was inevitable he told his men to jump into the main rigging, and from there 9 61 they were able to climb up inboard, and step over the bowsprit. We lowered two boats, and one of them getting too close, in the hope of saving life, was overturned by their foreyard; which came down with a run. All the occupants either jumped or were thrown into the water. The cutter they were in, being a lifeboat, quickly righted herself, and they all regained her except one man and a boy, who had been crushed by the foreyard in ita descent. He was clinging to a spar, and was picked up. He has a broken collar bone and at fractured spine, and his recovery is doubtful. The barque was of 380 tons, and carrying 500 tons of coal, and had left Sunderland only 12 hours before. She was not insured, and the skipper was part owner. Their lamps were lit, so the Govern- ment will probably have to make good the loss. We saved the whole crew, but they saved nothing from the wreck except the clothes they stood in and one little dog. The only life lost was that of a. large retriever.
THE NEW ARCHDEACON OF ST. ASAPH. Great satisfaction (says the Pall Mall Gazette) is felt throughout North Wales at the appointment by the bishop to the Archdeaconry and Canonry of St. Asaph, vacant by the death of Archdeacon Smart, of the Rev. Herbert Watkin Williams, chancellor of the cathedral and rector of the far-famed church of Bodelwyddan. He is a High Churchman, a, Conservative, and a wealthy man, who has helped many poor Welsh clergy. In six months the bishop has appointed a dean, two archdeacons, and two canons.
The schooner Maggie of Ardrossan, from Connah's Quay to Swansea, with bricks, when working through Skerries Sound, off Holyhead, on Saturday, during a strong ebb tide, was carried down to the dangerous rocks known as the East Platters, where there is a great race of tides and overfalls. Two lifeboats put off, and the men were received on board the Cemlyn lifeboat. They returned to the ship, but had again to take to the lifeboat on account of the boiling tide. The ship floated off the rocks and the captain engaged a tug, and she was towed safely to Holyhead Harbour, arriving about 9.30 p.m. The vessel is much damaged.
