"THOUGHT-READING" EXTRAORDINARY.
"THOUGHT-READING" EXTRAORDINARY. The science\>r art of thought-reading" has not '10 been generally considered very dangerous to public I safety. True, an eminent" thought-reader" not long ago created some excitement by dragging a respectable elderly gentleman bareheaded up and down the streets, in the endeavour to find a pin which had been secreted in a house close by. The most serious consequences, however, which have been produced by this and similar experiments have !;«-.< n t. ne. or two libel suits. But a case which is rei" i u jm Liverpool makes it appear that a thwc^wuiwler" may be as uncomfortable a member of society as a Social Democrat or any other "faddist." A young man was charged with loitering about at half-past three in the morning armed with a loaded revolver, a life-preserver, and a sheath knife. It was stated that his mind was effected through over-study and experiments in "thought-reading." When asked for an explanation as to the weapons, the prisoner said that he was an amateur conjurer, and used the revolver and knife in his entertain- ments. As to his keeping such early hours, that was due to his suffering from insomnia. Fortu- nately for him several witnesses gave evidence as to his good character, and the magistrates took a lenient view of the case, aud discharged him. But his example cannot be recommended with any con- fluence to other professors of clairvoyance and legerdemain. Lethal weapons are not such ob- viously necessary properties for those arts as to disarm suspicion, and any enterprising burglar, therefore, who, when caught red-hamled, thinks to escape punishment by pleading that he was only "thought-reading" will probably find that he has not read aright, and that the judge thinks differently.
