PRESENT ASPECT OF THE CRISIS.
PRESENT ASPECT OF THE CRISIS. Even those politicians at Westminster who most ardently hope for peace do not profess to discover any improvement in the critical state of the relations between our own country and Russia. The fact that additional days pass without reas- suring words from the Government is alone re- garded in political circles as justifying anxiety, especially in view of another still more ominous fact, namely, that both powers continue their war- like preparations with unabated vigour. These considerations gave rise this afternoon to somewhat disquieting rumours which in town caused a tem- porary depression in the Stock Exchange. Tohere is nevertheless no good reason to believe that her Majesty's Government are in possession of bad news, or that the aspect of continued diplomatic negotiations has undergone any unfavourable change. Her Majesty's Ministers were somewhat disappointed to find that the despatch received on Friday from Sir Peter Lumsden was not as they had expected his reply to their inquiry concerning discrepancies between his own and General Koma- rofFs version of the battle near Pen j-deb. Further explanations on both sides are still expected npcn that point, and will probably arrive in two or thn e days at the latest. Meantime but little surprise is expressed that Sir Peter Lumsden, in new ampli- fying his account of the engagement on the 30th, should repeat and emphasize some of those points upon which his informants were already, known to be at variance with the Russian General.
