SOMEWHAT PENSIVE. THERB are three kinds of pens sold by a celebrated Edinburgh firm, under the names of the Waver Iff pen, the Owl pen, arid the Pickwick pen. Now whatever may be the case with regard to the middle one, the other two are, doubtless, unrivalled, for what can equal the pens of SCOTT and DICKENS?—Judy. BREAKFAST.—A SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT.—The Civil Service Gazette has the following interesting remarks:— "There are very few simple articles of food which can boast so many valuable and important dietary properties as cocoa. While acting ontne tierves as a gentle stimulant, it "provides the body with some of the purest elements of nutrition, and at the same time corrects and invigorates the action of the digestive organs. These beneficial effects depend in a great measure upon the manner of its preparation, but of late years such close attention has been given to the growth and treatment of cocoa that there is no difficulty in securing it with every useful quality fully developed. The singular success which Mr. Epps attained by his homoeopathic preparation of cocoa has never been surpassed by any experimentalist.. Far and wide the reputation of Epps's Cocoa has spread by the simple force of its own extraordinary merits. Medical men of all shades of opinion have agreed in recommending it as 'the safest and most beneficial article of diet for persons of weak constitutions. This superiority of a particular mode of prepara- tion over all others is a remarkable proof of the great results to be obtained from little causes. By a thorough knowledge of the natural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutrition, and by a careful application of the fine properties of well-selected cocoa, Mr. Epps has provided our breakfast tables with a delicately flavoured beverage which may save us many heavy doctors' bills. It is by the judicious use of such articles of diet that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to disease. Hundreds of subtle maladies are floating around us ready to attack wher- ever there is a weak point. We may escape many afatal shaft by keeping ourselves well fortified with pure blood and a pro- perly nourished frame." SCIENCE AND ART.—A striking instance of the immense value a small piece of steel, may acquire by the great power of skilled mechanical labour is the balance-spring of a watch. From its extreme fineness and delicacy 4,000 weigh not more than One ounce, and exceed in value £ 1,000. A most interesting little work describing the rise and progress of watchmaking; has been published by J. W. Benson, 25, Old Bond Street, and the City Steam Factory, 58 and 60, Ludgate Hill.. The book, which, is profusely illustrated, gives a full description-of the various kinds of watches and clocks, with their prices. Mr. Benson (who holds the appointment to the Prince of Wales) has also published a pamphlet on Artistic Gold Jewellery, illustrated with the Ep.ost beautiful designs of Bracelets, Brooches, Earrings, Lockets, &e., &c., suitable for Wedding, Birthday, and other presents. These pamphlets are sent post free for two stamps each, and they can- not be too strongly recommended to those contemplating a pur- chase, especially to residents in the country or abroad, who are thus enabled to select any article they may require, and have it forwarded with perfect afety. THOSE LADIES who have not yet tried the GMNFiELD STARCH, are respectfully solicited, to give it a trial, and carefully follow out the directions printed on every package. It is rather more difficult to make than other Starches, but when this is overcome, they will say like the Queen's Laundress, that is the finest Starch they ever used. SOMETHING TO BE READ AND REMEMBERED.-The. con- sumption of Lucifer Matches in Great Britain and Ireland ex- ceeds, it is estimated, one hundred millions daily. Bearing in mind the reckless manner in which Lucifer Matches are used, it would probably be within the mark to assume that two or three out of every hundred are carelessly dropt, or, not readily lighting, thrown away, although still retaining their combus- tible properties but suppose that only me match oilt of every hundred is thus dealt with, we have the appalling fact that one million of matches are thus daily scattered in dwellings, ware- houses, workshops, and stables: in short, wherever Lucifer Matches are used, and without doubt are very often the cause of conflagrations reported in the newspapers-" origin of fire unknown." Lucifer Matches cannot be dispensed with, and it would be utopian to expect that the careless use of them will cease; but it is now possible to guard against the danger resulting "from any number thus heedlessly wasted by using only the Patent Special Safety, which Light only on the Box, manufactured by Bryant and May, London.
