The total gross proceeds of the sale and concert amount to JB270, and the com- mittee are to be heartily congratulated on the success that crowned their work. especi- ally when it is borne in mind that the parish is a small one, the population juet over 40C, with 110 or so ratepayers, and there .ire no wealthv residents. It would b inyidious to mention names where alt worked so well and so enthusiastically, yet one cannot refrain from mentioning a few nf those whose untiring efforts contributed to the success of the sale and concert, viz., Messm N. Nicholas, Llanwrda Shop; Jame Jones, coal merchant; J. A. Davies, Penylan, and the secretary. W. Hughe*, The Schools. Last, but not least, thanks nsre due to the ladies who supervised the it'fieshment stalls and the various other stalls, making each branclli a siicces*. During the past fortnight no less than four old Llanwrdk boys have been home on leave from the front, and each has been the recipient of a gift from the fund collected in the parish for the purpose. ABERAYRON
ABERAYRON We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Mary Robertson, Regent-street, which took place on Monday, he 18th inst, at tho ripe ol ago of 92 years. The deceased, who was a native of Shrewsbury, came to thw clfrs- tric when very young and entered tne ser- vice of Major Lewee, of Llanayron Man- sion. In a few years time she was married to Mr. Robertson, who was also in tho em- ploy of Major Lewes as a stem-art and head gardener. The union proved a very happy one, but unfortunately her husband, while quite a young man, was seized with an illness which proved fatal to him, lead- ing- the deceased with several young chil- dren to mourn his loss Shortly after- wards the deceased! removed to this town, and by hard work and many a sleepless night, managed to bring her c'lildren up in a meet respectable and honourable manner. all of whom wore extremely devoted and kind to their mother in after vc-ars. rlhe deceased was -of an exceptional and ami- able disposition, and was greatly respected and admired by all who came intb contact wite her. She was very religiously in- clined and up to a few years ago attended Holy Trinity Church; regularly, nnd wag one wh-o believed that religion could also be practised in every-day life. Her loss is mourned by three grown-up rons and two daughters besides a large number of friends and admirers, but it is natural that her loss will be most keenly felt by her son, and her grand-daughter, Miss Lily Rose, who had always made their home with her. The funeral took place on Thursday at Llanereh avron churchyard, the Rev. Evan Evans, R.D., offiodating at the house, and also at the church and graveside, assisted by the Vicar, the Rev Alban Davies. Several of our soldier boys were home over the holidays. Among them we noticed Sapper Dannie D. Evans, Albert-street, of the R.E., and Private Daniel Jenkins, Princes-strew, the former having been on active service in France for nearly eighteen months, while the latter is in training with the R.F.A. at Bedford. It is reported that the s.6. Norseman has become a total wreck on the west coast of Ireland, having run on the rocks. Up to a few weeks ago the Norseman used to trade regularly between here and Bristol, but was sold by the local company to a Glasgow firm. All the crew were saved, which in- cluded.' one Aberayron man. The usual Christmas holidays at the ele- mentary schools here have been very much curtailed this year. understand that the schools will be closed only on Christmas Day and again on New Year's Day. This has become necessary owing to the schools having been closed for a month early in the autumn on account of an epidemic of measles among the children ha,"ring broken out shortly after the summer holidays. Mr. James Avron Harries, who died at Mr. James Avron Harries, who died at Aberystwyth on Friday last, was a native -of this town, where he was well known and greatly respected. During the last few years he had) resided at Aberystwyth, and occupied the position of representative for West Wales for the well-known firm -of Messrs Bibby & Sons, oil cake manufac- turers. The deceased was also well known throughout this and other counties having travelled extensively a,4 a representative of the above firm. He also occupied the posi- tion of a deacon at Baker-street (C.) Church where his Wis will be keenly felt. He leaves a widow and aeweral brothers and eisters to mourn his loss. A very successful Christmas Show and market was held here on Wednesday, and the committee are to be congratulated upon their extorts in having a show andl market established here. The entries in the live poultry section were very numerous, but owing to the railway restrictions several ex- hibitors were presented from bringing- their Hrdsl to the show. The entries in other sections were not so numerous as last- year, but tho things exhibited in all branches were greatly appreciated by the public. lv is to be hoped that after the war is over the show amc market, which is now well established, will be eagerly supported by all classes, and that great progress will be made in many di-ections. Great .redit is due to the treasurer, Mr. Jnhn Williams, Princes-street, for his indefatigable efforts in connection with this an previous shows and also to the secretaries, Messrs. T. H. Davies and D. R. Jones. A whist drive is to be held on Boxing mght at the Assembly Rooms, to entertain the wounded soldiers, Mr. E. Hughes Davies, Llarion House, and P.O. Samuel Davies. are responsible for the arrange- ments, assisted by the ladies of the town. A very enjoyable time was spent, a.nd great praise is due to those who have undertaken to cater for our deserving heroes in this manner. It is high time that steps should be taken to increase our home-food production. There is considerable waste land in the immediate district which could easily be utilised for this purpose. We hope to see steps taken shortly to tackle the question in earnest as wc are confident that a lot could be done here in that direction. The great question of obtaining a home- grown food supply for next year does not appear to have received any particular at- tention bv the local authority. There are several field/s and plots of land idle within the Immediata district, that could easily be utilised for the purpose of growing poto- !toes. vegetables etc., but- so far no steps have been taken with a view of forming a scheme by which these plot." and fields could be used for that purpose. We would sug- gest that the local council should at once ta.ke the matter in hand and to ask the co- operation of the ratepayers generally, as the rime is already short to enable them to formulate a scheme and to get the land properly laid out and put in or so that the same may be ready to be planted in March or April. The Rev. J. C. Hughes, Ph.D., of Car- marthen, conducted the serrices at the Llanddewi-\berarth CSiurch on Sunday morning and evening. We understand that the rev. gentleman dealt very fully in his discourses on the question of drink. which in view of the shortage of food, etc., bas become a eery important question at the present moment. The 20th annual report was presented by fr C. J. Hughes, B.A., hea^ti master, at the annual prize function held at the school on Thursday, December 14th, at 3 o'clock. Aid. John M. Howell, J.P., chairman of the Board of Managers, pre- sided. He was supported by Mrs. T. Z. Jones and Mr. D. A. Dawies, managers, and The staff, viz., the Headmaster, Mr. E James M.A., Mr. W. J. Jones, IR.Se., Miss I Furby. B.A., Miss Davies, B.A., Misa Wat- son, B.A., and Miss Jones. After the pupils had sang "Where the Bee suolts," ac- companied by Miss Jones, Alban-square, rhe ITeamastcr submitted his report, in which he slated that Eunice Ma.v Evans and May Llewellyn had gained higher certi- ficates. The following had gained the ■senior certificate, Bessie M. Daries, Mary Evans, E. Blorhven Morgan, Margaret M. Owen. Annie M. Roberts, I. Hywel Wil- liams. Thomas Williams. Junior certi- ficates were gained by E. Glvn Daviee, J. Myfanwy Davies. Dorothy fevans, Hettie J. Rvnns. T. Maldwvn Evans, D. I.Ibyd Herbert. Margaret M. Jenkins, E. Muriel Jones, Evan Daniel Jon. Lilian ivT. Pugh, TdNval Uoberts. May Williams, Thomas W ilLnms, Evan Morgan. Eva n Morgan had been appointed a clerk in the N.P. Bank. and David Higgon Evans in the L.O. and M .Bank. The certificates and book pn?es were handed over by the Warden of Llandovery (the Rev. W. Poole Hughes). The Chairman said they were much puzzled v the diffusion of subjects insiste.d on by the authorities. It wm unrea-soTiable to expect very good work when eleven sub- jects or more were insisted on. He thought there should be more point and concentra- tion in the methods of the education con- trolling authorities.—The Warden of Llan- dovery, in the course of an extremely in- fteresting address, said that no doubt the war was going to bring about a great change in their educational ideals and I methods. And the change was going to be- m at the top. He was a member of a conference of the head teachers of colleges and public, schools, which were collaborat- ing and organising for the new era. It was suggested that a certain knowledge of scions should be obligatory as a oondition to enter Oxford. He agreed to a modified degree in s-ome suoh test. But he thought that to insist on a mathematical test would be an error Some mindta were so consti- tuted that, they could not SO'-Q abstruse mathematical problems, and stilt they were men destined for groat careers. He \vafl men destined for groat careers. He Nvaa inclined to think that a certificate of at- tendance at a course of instruction in a preparatory school or college a* providing sufficient proof of an adequate f ',„r'rhr to tile principles and meaning of rn-edentific enquidy ought to bo enough! ,ehed t hen-i
