INDIAN CHURCH AID ASSOCIATION. IMPORTANT TASK. This Association was founded in 1880, and in 1900 was adopted by the Episcopal Synod in India as its official organ in England. The principal task laid upon the Association by the Indian Bishops has been the help of the Domiciled Community in India, consisting of Europeans who have made their homes there, and of Anglo- Indians (formerly known as Eurasians ") who have been born and bred in the coun- try, and who are in a greater or less degree of mixed European and Asiatic de- scent. The practical ignoring of these classes by the missionary agencies of the Church of England has been productive of grave mischief to the cause of missions to the heathen, and has seriously tarnished our character for sincerity among the natives of India. In spite of the gallant efforts and appeals by Bishops and chap- lains in the past, the efforts of the Church to provide for this community have been nothing like commensurate with their needs, and recent changes in the conditions of the country have greatly aggravated the evil. The result has been a grievous leak- age of our children to the schools provided on a lavish, scale by the Church of Rome, freely financed from the Vatican, and manned almost entirely by foreign teach- ers, with the natural corollary of a cor- responding loss of members of our Church to that of Rome. The Association at the prompting of the Bishops has raised money for educational work in all directions; by its unaided efforts the Bishop's School at Nagpur was saved a few years since from extinction and replacement by a Roman Catholic rival; we rendered substantial assistance at a critical moment to the new Anglican school at Ranchi, when a call for it was made at'short notice; we have helped the Bishop Cotton Schools at Bangalore, the Pratt Memorial School in Calcutta, the girlsJ school in the Lahore Diocese—which have been so gallantly taken over by the Society of St. Hilda, Lahore; and more re- cently we have appealed for help towards the St. Paul Diocesan School at Darjiling, as well as that particularly inspiring ven- ture of faith and sell-help, St. Thomas's School, Dehra Dun. But there is plenty to be done yet before the mischief of past neglect has been stayed, and the Council is contemplating and seriously considering the possibility of a great forward move- ment on behalf of this cause, for which the Bishops are again making an urgent appeal. Another achievement upon which the Association looks back with pride is the allocation of the £ 4,000 which made possible the immediate consecration of a Bishop in Assam and the recent contribu- tion of S500 which completed the Endow- ment Fund of the new Bishopric. The Council earnestly ask all who have an interest in the welfare of India to sup- port the Association and its work, which is "especially important in the critical cir- cumstances of to-day. Communications should be addressed to the Secretary, I.C.A.A., Church House, Dean's Yard, Westminster, S.W.I.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. REV. W. WILKS' GREAT SERVICE. AFTER being Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society for thirty years the Rev. W. Wilks is resigning his posi- tion. Advancing years is the ground for the decision. When Mr. Wilks took up his duties as secretary the society had only 1,000 jellows, and was in financial difficulties; it is now a flourishing or- ganisation with 15,000' fellows, an in- come of about £ 80,Q00 a year, large premises at Westminster, in which its fortnightly shows are held, and its own experimental gardens of 150 acres near Ripley, Surrey. Mr. Wilks, who w.as Vicar of Shirley, near Croydon, from 1879 to 1912, joined the society in 1866, and became its Secretary in 1888. Mr. W. Rikatson Dykes will be recom: mended by the Council as his successor, Mr. Wilks has accepted the post of joint editor of the society's publications.
