SEVERAL Prosecii? ions were instituted by the Attorney-General against different Glovers and Silk- Mercers, to recover the Penalty of ^200 eaclt, for having in their possession Foreign Leather Gloves and HondannueSilk Handkerchiefs. The Solicitor-General, who conducted the Prosecutions, staled to the Jury, that offeiices of this nature must be pro- secuted with considerable sevrrity, as the Importation of Goods of this description was highly injurious to the Manu- factures of this Country, anil, to the labouring Persons who are employed therein, and depend upon it for their subsist- t'nc; that If one Tradesman sold them, others were jiatb- rally. Induced to do so too thai they would otherw ise lose their Custom, as Persons who were prejudiced in "favour of foreign articles would frequent that-Shop wiiere the foreign articles were sold, and the consequence vvoiild be that they who obeyed the Law would softer bv that obedience, ai d they who violated the law wou'd prohf bv the violation that he therefore thought it an obligat-'On upon those who are to protect the Revenue to put tin law in strict force, in order that all Traders may be on the same, footing, and the British Manufacturers protected.—And that, for the future, no mitigation whatever would be made in the Penalties titat might be strictlj incurred.—In the above Caws, Penalties to a considerable amount were recovered.
