DANGER TO ST. JAMES'S CHURCH.
DANGER TO ST. JAMES'S CHURCH. To the Editor of the Free Press. Sir.—In passing the west side of St. James's Church this morning I noticed that the glass insu- lators covering the stays,which hold the lightning conductor to the walls, were broken so that now there is direct contact with the building, which means that the electric fluid collected from the atmosphere in thunder weather will be diverted from its proper course,to the danger of the building. I am, Sir, yours obediently. FIREMAN.

PONTYPOOL HARMONIC SOCIETY.
PONTYPOOL HARMONIC SOCIETY. To the Editor of the Jfree Press. Sir,—Will you grant me space to say that there will be no practice on Monday next, and that there will be a full rehearsal of St. Paul" only on Mon- day, January 4th.: Your obedient servant, untyiroil, Dec. 22nd. CHAS. LAWRENCE.
BAPTISM.
BAPTISM. To the Editor of the Free Press. Sj Jji reply to Mr. Chadwick, allow me to say that I said not that no passage could be found in favour ofibelievers' baptism, but that none could be found against infant baptism. As to the rest Mr. Chadwick may indulge in as many considerations as to my silence as may seem good to him. Sincerely yours, Dec. 23, 1891. M. EVANS.
!THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.
THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. To the Editor of the Free Press. Sir,-If you will kindly insert the following in your most valuable local paper, I shall reel much obliged, which is in reference to the closing of hairdressers on Saturday (Bank Holiday) the 26th inst. Two of the above trade went round to all the hairdressers on Tuesday, the 22nd mst., and met with every success until coming^ to George-street, where the chairman of the Hairdressers' Union refused to close, although it Demg Bank Holiday, knowing very well that there were several assistants wishing to get home for Christmas, and unable to get back until late on the Saturday. If all had signed to close on Saturday it certainly would have been a great bene £ t to both assistants andd maateFs, aba I really think it a shame that«th chairman of the Union should be the only one to refuse, thus causing all of them to be open, and depriving the assistants of their Christmas holidays. I trust that someone else will have something fie, say on this matter. Yours truly, ALLAN.
.-ABERSYCHAN LOCAL BOARD-WARDS…
ABERSYCHAN LOCAL BOARD-WARDS DIVISION. To the Editor of the Pontypool Free Press. Sir,—I have read with interest, largely mixed with surprise, the letter of "Enquirer in your last week's issue, "dl "Enquirer" permit me to, enquire whether Talywain has a single resident representative on the Board ? The answer must be in the negative. Will he also say whether the presence of such a representative on the Board would or not be more likely to conduce to such a matter as the unfenced road near Pisgah being urged on the attention of the Board for remedy, than with nearly half their representatives living in or near to the High-street of Abersychan ? Talywain ratepayers have the :entire sympathy of their Pontnewynydd and Northern Division brethren m this, and in kindred grievances. J5ut are these grievances likely to be removed, if th.6 representation of the large and scattered intertestff of the Local Government District of Abersychan- extending as it does sllie iJ-k miles north and south, and nearly the same distance east and west-is con- centrated as far as more than one half is concerned within half a mile radius from a central point in Abersychan, and 10 out of that half within a vigorous stone's throw from the same point, while, other parts of the district—Talywain among them —are absolutely destitute of resident representa- tives. The Northern Division ratepayers happily need no enlightenment from us of the South, for they are almost as much under-represented as we, and are, I am glad to say, heartily co-operating in the effort to get a more eqUItable representation of the different parts of the district. Surely such an effort should command, not the opposition of ialywam ratepayers, who, by the confession of one of them, are in such evil plight, but their approval and support, if only for the one reason that on the smaller area of the ward they would be more likely to get the direct representation which would enable Gam and Varteg and Cwmavon men to represent the Northern Division, Abersychan and Talywain men the Central Division, and Pont. newynydd, Cefnycrib, and Tranch men the Southern Division. A good deal of misrepresentation and misunder- standing have arisen on this ward question. When we presented the requisition to convene the meeting to the chairman of the Board, one of the many gentle- men representing Abersychan declared that the representation of Abersychn would be extinguished if the resolution were carried, and yet at the close of his speech inconsistently said that if a uniform rate were made for the whole district for scavenging anci ngntino-, ne would not oppose it. I say "incon- sistently for J challenge him to prove how the question of representation does or will in any way aru'et tneiiuystic,]1 of lighting and scavenging, or tlie division into wards will affect the fair dis- cussion and settlement of the question of a uni- form or separate rate. It may or may not be a desirable thing to have an equal rate over the whole district, but why this question should have been in- troduced at all as a bar to the introduction of another desirable reform. I, and I think most reasonable men, fail to understand. I At the ratepayers meeting not one single argu. I ment was directed against the justice of the pro- position before the meeting, tnose who opposed it doing so ostensibly on the ground that the two )u eth questions should go togetner. Knowing at the same time, as the leaders or tne opposition did, that the question of the wards division was one which could only be settled by the voice or the ratepayers in the manner rrelScnbed-namely, the meeting then a.sei-nble.d-itii(i that the question of one or two rating district was one purely for the decision of the Local Board itself, it should be remembered, too, in considering the question of uniform or sepa- rate raiang, that of the 23 members now on the Board 15. are resident in the lighting district, and surely. with this preponderance of voting power, if these gentlemen who now attach so much import- ance to a uniform rate had done their duty in the past, it would long ago have become an established fact. 0 I trust that the ratepayers of the whole district When their polling papers are delivered to tnem, not allow themselves to be blinded by the foreign dust with which it has been attempted to envelope this question, but will, by recording their votes in favour of the resolution, show that they are in favour of such a distribution of the repre- sentation on this, our most important governing authority, as will give to all parts of the district an equal voice did vote, and will also in all probability prove, not an increase to, but a saving to the rates by a diminution in .the number of contested elec tions. Yours obediently, Dec. 23,1891. WM. LEA PBATT. CContinuation of correspondence on page 6 •;
