OUR LONDON CORRESPONDENT.
OUR LONDON CORRESPONDENT. [ We wish it to be understood that we do not necessarily ew dorse the views and sentiments of our correspondent.] In the weekly papers, and probably in the homes and resorts of the working classes, no subject has been more eagerlj«discussed than Lord Derby's speech on the our question. The views that his lordship holds with respect to the non-continuance of the present high prices of labour were no doubt held previously by many who have read his remarks, and will be held by a great many more who have studied them. I venture to assert that we shall hear of very few new strikes between the present time and next spring, and I incline to think j that the coming time will be hard for a large pro- portion of society, especially for the lower- middle class, and for that section of the work- ing class who have not participated in the rise of wages. Just look at the position of one very large class only, our commercial clerks. As a body they receive less pay than our mechanics. There are thousands of clerks whose pay is from £ 100 downwards to E40 a year, while £ 80, C70, or S60 is a very com- mon amount. What mechanics are now earning need not be pointed out, and when we bear in mind that clerks invariably have to keep up a better appearance than the" horny-handed sons of labour," the condition of the former, with existing high prices of coal, food, and rent, will at once be seen to be anything but a bed of roses. I am glad to observe, there- fore, that the directors of the Bank of England, in view of the increased cost of the necessaries of life, have just added five per cent. to the salaries of their employes in the form of a gratuity. The example will perhaps be fol- lowed by some commercial firms, especially as a gratuity is less compromising than an increase of salary. It is W said that Mr Beed, lately the chief constructor of the Navy, is "engaged in de- signing a vessel of great length and speed which shall carry passengers from Dover to Calais in sixty minutes without any fear of discomfort from sea-sickness." There have been so many promises of sea-sickness being in some way or other obviated, that I Recline to believe this for the present. It is said that to the vessel is to be adapted an invention of ilr Bessemer (of steel notoriety) for obviating the mal de mer, and the entire experiment iscer-- tainly one in which the public have a great- interest. j But no mode,of communication with Calais will be complete without the deepening of the harbour. As to any steamer running from Dover to Calais in one hour, I will be- lieve it when I know that it has been dono;- The distance, be it known-in spite of any- thing that may have been said in reference to Mr Johnson's attempt to swim it-is over twenty miles. All success to Messrs Reed and Bessemer Nothing can be worse than exist- ing arrangements. The L.C. and D.R. make a great fuss about the "short sea route" and sea passage 90 minutes," but this is the very, very rare exception. To accomplish this, tide, wind, weather, and cargo must all be very favorable. The passage frequently takes two hours and a half, and sometimes more. There is so much that is painful and lament- able in connection with strikes, that it is quite a relief to have something amusing on the same subject. The London letter-carriers memorialized the Postmaster-General, some little time ago, for an increase of pay. Sub- sequently Mr Monsell met delegates from their body, and told them that they had nothing to complain of, but that, pour encourage les autres, he would institute a system of good-conduct stripes on the arm," similar to that in the army. What a grim joke A man asks for more money, and you give him a stripe on the arm. The men did not see the wit of their being, in their contest with Mr Monsell, beaten with these stripes, and told him this was not what they wanted; whereupon the Postmaster- General proposed something more ridiculous still. Good-conduct men, he suggested, should wear buttons on their coat-cuffs, each button to count as a stripe! 0 Mr Monsell, it might have been thought that you would have had "a soul above buttons." The men have, at all events. They have no notion of being honoured in this Chinese fashion. A mandarin may derive consolation from reflecting on his buttons being exceptionally numerous, but can you fancy a poor postman, on being told by hie wife that she has no more money left, cons;olisg himself by gazing at the buttons on hve ? We have heard of a man wearing heart r w ear upon his sleeve for daws to bat it would be something new"fojX~ari wea'r & button on his sleeve for peck at, Mr Stanley, of Afrip< fame> was the guest of the Savage Clufe-^ Saturday evening, on which ^1S grievances. There is little maK™ sa^> except that he ought by ijgk&rfo have made his appearance in Co- vent Garden a fortnight previously. He and General Sherman were invited, and Mr Andrew Halliday, the president of the club, agreed to occupy the official chair in honour of the oc- casion, but they did not show. Mr Stanley 46 was at Brighton fd General Sherman pleaded a prior engagement." I say" by rights," be- cause Mr Stanley is a member of the Istor club of New York, and therefore a member of the Savage. It was a bit of sharp practice on the part of the Garrick to secure him first. It ie to be hoped that the young American has been "lionized" tothe top of his bent. He has suffered some of the penalties which attach to greatness, but he has also experienced its glo- ries, and he ought to be satisfied. Although I believe Sir Charles Dilke has been vilified for assertions he never made, it j. certain that he has said so much which it would have been better for him not to have said, that he will do well to refrain for the present from taking an active part in politics, and his be- coming proprietor of that learned, chatty, and useful" periodical Notes and Queries would seem to indicate his intention to employ him- self in antiquarian and literary pursuits. Dr. Doran, the new editor, is a very competent man for the post. He may not be a man of great learning or attainments, but no man better than he knows where to nnd ample material to make any number of notes or answer any num- ber of queries. Mr W. J. Thorns, who refiz-as from the editorship, has for nearly half a cen- tury devoted much time and labour to archaeo- logy and literature, and it has been mainly a labour of love, for be has held for many years the post of deputy librarian in the House of Lords, with the comfortable salary of £ 700 a year. Readers of the metropolitan dailies have no doubt been greatly edified with a report of an annual cricket match between the gentlemen of the sporting press and the jockeys, whichevent came off at the Oval on Saturday. The best- known members of the sporting press were simply conspicuous by their absence. Mr J. Corbett (" Vigilant or Wizard ") of the Sportsman. and Mr W. E. Gale ("Aura,") of the Morning Advertiser, represented the pro- phets;" Messrs F. Gale, C. Conquest, Cleaver, .Pickwick, Stebbing, and J. H. Smith enjoy a connection with the sporting press about as close as the connection of a police officer on duty at the House of Commons with the existing government. Mr W. Collett was con- nected with BeWs Life, and Messrs Blake and Clark respectively represent the Sporting Life and the Standard. So much for the Press v. the Jockey's Match-an annual farce that might very well be abolished from the list of "fancy" fixtures.

SEA, The—three-fourths of what wo might call the earth the dwelling-place of whales, walruses, porpoises, seals, sailors, and other monsters. Strange that we often lose our way in travelling by land, where we have only to follow our nose, pursue the high roads chalked out for us, and read the sign posts set up for our guidance while in traversing the pathless deep, with none to ask, afed no sea-marks to direct, with uothing to pursue but the blank main and the illegible sky, a vessel seldom fails, however long and remote may be her voyage, to steer di- rect into her destined harbour. This is the proudest victory of science the greatest tri- umph of man over the elements. The little round compass is the ring that marries the most distant nations to each other. Commerce is the parent of civilisation the coasts and ports of a country will be always found more polished than the inland parts. The sea, therefore, shall ever receive the homage of my profound respect, but I cannot admire it. Hunt has justly defined it as a great monotonous idea. So little do I like it, that I care not to dwell upon it, even with my pen.-Horace Smith.
