CLEVELAND IRON MARKET.I
CLEVELAND IRON MARKET. I MIDDLESBROUGH, Tuesday.-Ti)e iron market has been quieter, because in some decree of the Scotch reports not being so good but there are contributory local conditions, as the works on the Tees side will be stopped for two cr three days by holidays, and consequently less iron will be wanted. Prices, instead of advancing, as has been the case for some weeks, have slightly receded, and about 31 per ton lower is quoted to-day as com- pared with last Tuesday. There was very little doing, and prices ranged from 43s 3d to 43s 61 No. 3. For present delivery sellers in some cases would take the lower figure; 43i 91 sellers and 43 6d buyers represented the once to the end of the year. Warrants were 43s 5d. Connal's stock has declined 3,592 tons on the week. The shipments of pig iron are above the average, being 52,000 tons for this month. The manufactured iron and steel trades are stpady, with favourable prospects. Common bars, L6 2s 6d ship plates, E6 7s 6d I angles, £ 5 17s 6J. Steel rails and plates are firm at late rates.

CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TUESDAY. There is very little that 13 new to report in con- nection with trade locally. On 'Change to-day there was a fair attendance, and the sales of steam coal were well up to the average. The house coal market was quiet, and little improve- I ment in this branch of the coal trade is expected during the present month. The pitwood market continues weak in consequence of the arrivals of I fresh cargoes. Welsh c^kes were again in good 1 demand, and the high prices recently obtained for this commodity were well maintained. In our local freight market chartering for steam was I moderately active, and the business effected was up to the average of the past few daye. Outward rates for the Upper Meditorraneau ports ruled firm, as did also Baltic freights. Spanish and Gibraltar quotations were steady, and Eastern quotations unchanged. The following comprise the latest opercttions:- Port Said, 10s 6d (Wilfrid), and again, 103 3d (Crescent). GiOraltar, 8s 9d (Molifcre). Algiers, 12jfc«., fuel (Frithoff). Ceylon, 13s (Daventry). Patras, option Corfu, 12s (A. Vagliano). Venice, 11" 3J coal, 12s fuel (Vesta). Lisbon, 9.; 3d (Denia), Swansea loading. Havre, 6, 3d (Planet), Newport loading. Saii.—Tins market was again in an active con- dition. Outward ratei from Buenos Ayres, River Plate, and the northern Brazilian ports j ruled firm, and there was a fair inquiry for I tonnage to load at South Wales ports for the East and West ludie-i and west coast of America. Ore.—Homeward rates from Povina, Decido, j Salta Cabello, and Bilbao ruled firm, with an average demand for boats to load for the Bristol Channel ports, while from Porman, Carthagena, and Huelva fairly prompt tonnage was in strong request. j
-SWANSEA EXCHANGE.
SWANSEA EXCHANGE. SWANSEA, TUESDAY. The attendance on 'Change to-day was fairly numerous. We have again to remark upon the anomalous position of the pig iron market, as while the warrant market shows some weakness and lower quotations than last week, at the same time the makers' price has further advanced, and for M-N Bessemer pigs makers are asking 55s to 573 6d, whereas the warrants are given below at 53 lid to 54s. The only way we can account for the difference is the realization by speculative operators, the result of which cannot affect the market permanently. The continued advance in raw materials still limits the business in tin plates to short time sales, for which makers insist upon improved prices, though still inadequate to meet the cost cf pro- duction, which is being augmented by a further increase in the price of steel bars. It is reported, indeed, that steel makers are demanding a further advance of 10s per ton, and that contracts have actually been made at j65 51 for Bessemer bars, which some makers are quoting even 25 10s, but we cannot learn that this price has been realised. Pig Iron.-Glasgow warrants, 45 lid, 45;¡ lOd, 46s cash sellers market steady. Middles- broug-h-N o. 3, 43 3d prompt other numbers in proportion market steady. A CARDIFF ASSAULT CASE,
A CARDIFF ASSAULT CASE, BITING OFF A MAN'S LIP. At Cardiff police-court on Tuesday—before Dr Paine and Mr Peter Price—Cbas. Woods (36) was ciiarged with assaulting Thos. Roberts by kicking him on the face in Wood-street on the 19th inst. The prosecutor, who appeared with hi3; head covered with a huge bandage, said he was going down Wood-street in company with his wife on Monday night, when be passed the prisoner, who was in company with some other imen. Prisoner said something disrespectful' of his wife, and then pushed her. Without more ado, Woods attacked him violently, throw- ing him against the wall and kicking him. He then proceeded to bite prosecutor's lip, and did this with such force that a piece was bitten clean off. The piece was produced in court in a glass bottl.-Prisoner, in defence, said that Roberts had assaulted him first, and bad given him a violent kick. It appeared that before the assault the prosecutor passed several women, one of whom abused his wife, calling her U l\lr Kew's informer. At this juncture Mr T. H. Belcher entered the court, having just been instructed to defend. It was decided, in so much as Roberts could not talk with ease, that the case should, be adjourned for cross- examination for a week. The medical evidence of Dr Fowler, however, was taken. The doctor said that he examined the prosecutor shortly after midnight. There was a hole in his left cheek about the size of a florin. The skin was completely removed, but at the angleof the mouth the wound extended right through the mouth. The constable had brought him a piece of flesh which he believed was the part bitten out. Bail was granted, the prisoner to enter into his own recog- nisances in t' e <ora of £ 25 and to find a surety of £25,

"VERDICT OF 300.' Under this heading Messrs R. J. Heath and Sons, Cardiff, issue a pamphlet containing testimonials from their numerous customers. As makers of and dealers in pianofortes, organs, harmoniums, and other instru inents, the firm have established the highest reputa- tion, and the particular value of the testimony which they bring into public notice is that it emanates from local sources, and may therefore be tested by personal inquiry in any direction. To judge from the number and variety of the letters received, it would almost appear as though the Messrs Heath had sup- plied all Cardiff and South Wales with instruments of music; but although this is by no means the case, it is unquestionable that they have a veiy wide and constantly enlarging circle of customers, and that these are thoroughly well pleased with the instruments they have had delivered to them. Having considerable variety of stock, and holding agencies from the best makers — being also manufacturers themselves the firm are able to give their customers a good choice both in style and price and, an instrument having been chosen, the experience of the purchaser appears to be in every instance most satisfactory. The pamphlet directs particular attention to the tuning branch of Messrs Heath's business, they having a laige connection tuning about 3,000 pianos yearly and in regard to the repair- ing department, they offer to send a representaeive, free of charge, for the purpose of giving an estimate of the cost of repairs. Those contemulating purchase of an instrument will do well to consider the Verdict of 300," obtainable on application at Messrs Heath and Sens, 51, Queen-street, Cardiff. 5—1066 W E.
