POST-OFFICE SAVINGS BANK.
POST-OFFICE SAVINGS BANK. SOUTH WALES DEPOSITS. The working classes of our country are learning to recognise more and more the importance of making provision for the future. Benefit societies of various kinds have become interwoven with the social life of the masses and the post-office savings bank, with its ramifications in every corner of the land, is commanding in ever- increasing degree their confidence. Apart from thair value in other respects, the fact that in- pt:,r;^ons of this character have taken muel-, firm root is a subject for congratulation, alike to the matter-of-fact political economist and to the visionary social reformer. It demonstrates clearly the progress which the principles of thrift and frugality are making in our midst. Having re- gard to our vaunted enlightenment this progress may be slow but nevertheless it is very sure. The annual returns of the Post-office' Savings Bank just issued supplies undoubted evidence on this head, and from the mass of figures many a suggestive fact may be deducted. The total number of accounts remaining open at Post-office Savings Banks in the British Isles on the 31st December, 1853, was no fewer than 4,220,927, and the amount inclusive of interest standing to the credit of the accounts was no less than LSS,556,394 93 8d. The number of depositors represents a consider- able proportion of our total adult population. A comparative table, showing the amounts to the credit of the respective countries, with the popu- lation of each at the census of 1881,will be studied with interest. Cardiff excepted, however, the relative increase in the population of other South Wales towns, has proceeded in large degree in a similar ratio. In the table appended it should be stated that the population is that of the registration sub- districts in each case. The figures are not to be taken as indicative of the relative saving pro- pensities of thediffarent towns, inasmuch as there are trustee savings banks in certain places in addition to these at the Post Offices.
