WATER-GAS. The following Extract from the" Times" of January 2nd, 1889, relative to the manufacture and applica- tion of Water-gas, is reprinted for general informa- tion :— W ATEH.GAS. II For many years past attempts have been made at intervals to produce what is known as water-gas-that is. gas resulting from the decomposition ot water. Experimentally there have been several successes, but j practically and commercially up to tbe present time, as far as we are aware, these have been only failures. Thesefa.iJures have mainly arisen from the difficulty experienced in separating the water-gas trom the other products. This difficulty has now been over. come, not by one invention, but by the combination of the best features of several inventions linving for their object the manutacture of water-gas. What is more, the patented iJlventionil which have betn combined in the new process are not those of one inventor or of one country, but represent several inventors and several nationa.lities-namely, England, Germany, America, and Sweden. The amalgamation of these various patents and the beneficial results wakll have accrued therefrom came about by reason of the exigencies of manufacture of corrugated boiler flues and press-flanged steel frame plates for railway rolling stock at the Leeds Forge Company's Work, Leeds. The metallurgical operatioll carded out tnere demanded fuel of a higher calorific intensity than could be ob- tained from either the generator gas of the Siemens producer or ordinary coal gas. Mr Samon Fox, the managing director, therefore turned his attention to water-gas, and, having carefully considred the whole question, decided upon putting down a water-gas plant at the Leeds Fore. The works were begun on Sep. tember 29, 1887, and on March 29, 1888, plant capable of producing 40,000 cubic feet of water-gas per hour was started, and has since been in constant operation with perfect success, and wibhout interrup- tion. The gas produced gives every satisfaction, not only for metallurgical, but also for lighting purposes, the whole of the works being supplied with it. "Water-gas is the result of a chemical reaction 1I'hich takes place in passing steam through incan. descent carbonaceous matter, and may be considerell as 1 he practical result on a wholesale scale of the ordin. ary laboratory experiment of decomposing water by pass. ing steam througl1 a highly-heated iron tube. In t,he water-gas apparatus the fuel, which at Leeds Forge is coke, is raised to a high temperature in a generator by the aid of an air-blast. The blowing is continued for about ten minutes, by which time the fuel has reached a dull red heat. During this period what is known as producer-gas is given off, and this is led away to a range cf Lancashire boilers, where it is utilised in raising steam for the engines in the works. At the end of tell Dlinntes the valves are reversed, the air blast being stopped, and the further exit of producer-gas to the boilels prevented. 8tearn is then admitted at the top of the generator for four minutes, and, pa.5inj1; down through the incandescent fuel, becomes decom. posed, and a iix- il gas results. This gas as formed passes away to a scrubber, where it iOj tieated in much the same way as ordinary coal./(a1;. From the scrubber it pases to the gas-holder, where it is stored for use for metallurgical pnrpose in the works, such as heat- ing and welding. For indoor illuminating purposes a portion of the gas is conducted frQIll the gas-holder to the purifiers, where its purification is effected by means of oxide Gf iron. It will thus be seen that. the process consists of alternately blowing the generator ot and making gas, and that a run of gas is made every 10 minutes, durin wl.ich time the yield from each generator is about 17.5 ° cubic feet of producer- gas and 5,000 cubic filet oi pure water-gas for heating an (I lighting purposlOs Tbe t as is also used most successtully for driving gas engines. It is also used in welding t,he»e tubes and heating tte plates for Mr Fox's flanged frame-plates for railway rolling stock, and for his flanged boiler-froms, besides which it is ntilised in various other similar operations throul1;hout the works, In the application of water-gas to toe manufacture ot Siemens' steel there i a marked improvement in the quality as well as the quantity of the product. With this gas 30 charges of steel per furnace per week can be turned out, as against 11 charges per furnace per week from furnaces of equal capacity using gas from Siemens' producers. Be- sides being used for metallurgical pl1rpose, the offices and yarious parts of the works are lighted with water-gas, the burners employed being arranged on the Fahnejelm system. The heatin power of water-gas was "ery great, as was demonstrated upon our recent visit to the Leeds Forge Works, where we inspected the method of its manufacture as well as that of its use in the various departments. To give one instance only, a piece of copper wire placed in an ordinary coal-gas flame was only made red hot, A similar piece of wire Elaced in a water-gas flame issuing from a similar uiner was quickly and perfectly fused. AD important consideration in the adoption of any new system is, of course, its cost; and in this respect water-gas conies out well. Its production per ton of fuel is about 30,000 cubic feet, and with fnel at 8s per ton, labour at 3s 6d per man per day, and the prduction going on continuously, it is found that the gas costs slightly less than 4d per 1,000 cubic feet. The experience of nine months' working at the Leeds Forge hs led to the conclusion, based on carefully-ascertained data., that the saving effected pn the whole works is about £ 10,000 per annum. Looking at the advantage ot water. gas for illuminating purposes, it is to be observed that, besides giving an agreeable light, it does not develop any noxious fumes, nor does It prodnce smoke halth and cleanliness being thereby preserved, and paintings, furniture, and decorations remaining uninjured. For lightiug mansions this would prove a boon, while the producer-gas can be utilised ior heating purposes. Similarly, a mill-owner laying down a water-gas plant for lighting his factory will obtain gaseous fuel for steam-raising purposes practically for nothing. For small tOWl1S also tbe lighting could be carried out with water-gas, the producer-gas being used for steam-raising and manufacturing purposes generally. Although the installation of this water- gas plant at the Leeds Forge is the first in England, the system is being largely adopted in America and 011 tle Continent, both at steel works aml for illuminating purposes."
