---CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, WEDNESDAY. Tnere was a very good attendance on 'Change to-day, and a fair amount of activity prevailed in all departments of local trade. Steam coal was in improved request, and there was an average inquiry for house coal and patent fuel at last quotations. The pitwood market was quiet, but for Welsh cokes there was an unabated demand, as there was also for small steam and bituminous coal, at yesterday's values. In our local freight market to-day chartering for steam tonnage has been exceptionally active, more especially for the higher Mediterranean ports, and for the latter a very large business has been effected. Rates for this direction continue moderately firm. Spanish, Gibraltar, and Bay port freights are steady. Eastern freights quiet. Baltic, coasting, and States outward quotations remain unchanged. The following comprise the latest operations :— Gibraltar, 9s 3d (Rapid) Barcelona, 14s 6d (Florence Richards) Port Said, lis 7d (Moonstone) Venice, 12s (Diadem) Brindisi, lis 3d f.f.c. Sail.—Outward freights for the River Plate, West Indies, and Brazils ruled firmer, and there was also an improved demand for this class of tonnage to load for South American and Northern Brazilian ports. Quotations for the East continue Brazilian ports. Quotations for the East continue quiet. Coasting.and Baltic steady. Italian ana Mediterranean rates remain unchanged. The following fixtures have been reported for South Wales loadingBuenos Ayres, 353, option Monte Video, 29-, two vessels Monte Video direct, 30s (Childers), Ore.—Rates from Bilbao continue moderately firm, with fair demand for tonnage to load for the Bristol Channel. From Benisaf, Huelva, Cartha- gena, Garrucha, and Ergasteria there is a steady demand for forward tonnage, and several boats are still wanted to load for the continent and the East and West Coasts of the United Kingdom. PomaroD, Carloforte, and other Mediterranean quotations remain unchanged.
NEWPORT EXCHANGE.
NEWPORT EXCHANGE. NEWPORT, WEDNESDAY. What with the meeting of the county council and the official opening of the Newport Provision Market by the mayor, combined with the inaugural committees appointed for carrying out the May-day Horse Show to-morrow, the attendance on 'Change to-day was somewhat weak, although some influential representatives of the staple trades of the district were present, and succeeded iu getting into their accustomed affinitive trade groups. The tone of the market was satisfactorily buoyant, and encouraging evidence was furnished throughout the gathering that the metal trades are as hardy as can be fairly expected. This fact is confirmed by makers and buyors being in closer relations as to quotations, not only as to immediate, but also to forward deliveries, than has been the case for some time past. The coal market evidenced a touch of weakness, but the season of the year will account for this fact to a certain extent. The following are the quotations Coal.—Best steam, lis 61 to 12-1 per ton seconds in proportion house, 12s small and dock screenings, 6s to 6s 61 smiths', 6s 9 I to 7s. EXTRAORDINARY MURDER CON- FESSION. American mail news states that the district of Varnasville (Ohio) is greatly excited over a dying confession of murder. Sixteen years ago Thomas McCall, son of a wealthy farmer, mysteriously disappeared, and large rewards were offered, but were of no avail. His brother Josepbus has now, when on the point of death, confessed to having in a quarrel killed him, and thrown his body into an old well.

IA " CHAMPION PUGILIST " AT…
I A CHAMPION PUGILIST AT I LARGE. I At Pontypridd police-court ou Wednesday, George Williams, collier, Pontypridd, who did not put in an appearance, was charged with I having used threatening language towards Mr D, Thomas, the manager of the Maritime Colliery. The accused worked in a stall where double timbering had beeu resorted to. Prosecutor, having visited the stall, fcund that double timbering was no longer necessary, and gave orders accordingly. Defendant took I umbr-ige at this and became very violent. The manager's decision as to the stall was confirmed by several of the workmen, and the case eveutually came before the workmen's committee. Here, however, th»accused refused to allow a deputation to state the dispute, became exceedingly uproarious, and threatened to kill the chairman and "the whole lot of 'em." Subsequently he appeared before complainant's house and exclaimed, "There's a man living here whom I should like to catch hold of, and whom I should like to do away with." Similar threats had been used by him in other places, and prosecutor was afraid to leave the house. The defendant was described by Mr Simons as a "champion pugilist and a dangerous man."—A warrant was issued for his apprehension, and subsequently defendant was brought up in custody and b'mnd over to keep the peace.
