f LONDON, Wednesday. ta the Money Ma .rket & moderate business was pMeing, mainly Ujt connection with the Stock Exchange settiome nt, but day-to-day money was to be bad at Ii per cent., and thAre was a good competitfon for bi iie, Three moatbs' bank paper did not make mo,re than 1 9-16 to Ii per cent., and the charge fior three, four, and six months' trade bills was H to 3 per cent. As to-morrow u pay-day on the Stock Exchange, it is thought the Bank of England directors may postpone making any change in rates. Paris Cheque Exchange ia 2fj 26 Berlin, ehqrt, 20.46. The account is going off quietly. The feature of the day bati been a demand for American Railways, uhicb are at length meeting with epeeulat've attention. Canadian Railways also are steady, but in most other respects the tone bas been weak on the closing of some accounts for a rise. There are no fears that any difBcuIttes worth mentioning will transpire this settlement. New 'Consoit closed at 98i to 98k for dehvery. and 98 to 9 for account; Old 3 per Oant., 101 to 101b; Reduced 3 per Cent., 99t to 7.0OJ; New 21 per Cent. Amongst Fore'gn Bonds, Peruvian issues were firm oa the announcement that an extraordinary seMion of Congress bad been summoned to meet on'May 20!-h to reconsider the Grace contract. Other interaahonat issues were quiet, with very little change, but, considering the absence of the market was steady. The English Railway Market has broken away <t little on a few realisations being made. Traffic ttatements, considering they compare with Easter week last year, are satisfactory, particularly Midland and North Western; bet the market has anticipated them, and a few safes have in consequence produced a weak tendency, but onty fractional movements have occurred. CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS. WEDNESDAY. The 'Change to-day was well attended, and the activity which has characterised the steam coal trade for some days past was well maintained, the market closing arm at yesterday's quotations. There was a good demand for house c"al, and sellers refused to do business at leas than full current rates. Welsh cokes were again in strong request, and there was a good average inquiry for patent fuel and pitwood. In our local freight market to-day chartering for steam tonnage has been fairly active, more especially for the higher Mediterranean ports, and for the latter a fair amount of business has been effected. Bates for this direction ruled a shade firmer, as was also Spanish, French, Bay ports, and Gibraltar freights. Baltic and West Indian freights steady. States outward quotations remain unchanged. The following comprise the latest operations :— Port Said, lls 9d (Ferntands) Marseilles, 13ifcs (Uasterton); Cronstadt, 7a f.f.c. and tree despatch London, 4s 6d (Brighton), and at "the same rate for (Newent); Lisbon, 8 91 (County of Durham) Gibraltar, 8< 6'J, f.f.c., f.d., and f.b. (Dante) Cape Verds. 15< 6d, clean terms of charter (M. Bedlington) St. Lucia, 14a 61 (Southwood); London, 43 Sd (Vectis); Port Said, 12-1 (Oraino) Havre, 5,3 coal, 5s 3d fuel (Brackley) Copanbagon, 7s (Gtengeldor); toe two last named Swansea ioadtcg. Sail.—Outward freights for the River Plate, West Indies, and Brazils continue moderately firm, and there was also a good demand for this class of tonnage to load for South American and the Northern Brazilian ports. Quotations for the Eitst continue quiet. Coasting and Baltic steady. Italian and Mediterranean rates remain unchanged. Ore.—Rates from Bilbao continue moderately nrm, with fa.ir demand for tonnage to load for the Bristol Channel. From Becisaf, Huelva, and Carthagena. there is a steady demand for tonnagOt and several boat3 are wanted to load for the continent and the East and West coasts of the United Kingdom. Pomaron, Ergasteria, and other Mediterranean ore quotations remain unchanged.
NEWPORT EXCHANGE.
NEWPORT EXCHANGE. NEWPORT. WEDNESDAY. A very small attendance of members owing to the quarterly meeting of the steel and iron trades at Birmingham. Independently of these disintegrating influences an important meeting of magistrates was held at Usk. The undeniable attractions of Chepstow Races also tended to lesson the attendance, and only about a score gentlemen were present. All orders were, by a tacit understanding, held over until next meeting. The London tetegra.m showed p!g iron, 444 6<t hematites, 48 8d; copper, JB40 tin. JB92 17s 6d. all cash.
