REGISTERED OFFICES.—The ASHFORD STEAM FLOUR MILLS, Ashford, Kent. TEMPORARY LONDON OFFICES. BARTHOLOMEW HOUSE, Bartholomew-lane, E.C. ABRIDGED PROSPECTUS. This company is formed for the purpose of purchas- ing and taking over 32 old-established bakers' busi- nesses, carried on for many years past in the main thoroughfares of various densely populated parts of London, and also an extensive and valuable freehold flour mill, with a capacity considerably in excess of that required for supplying the whole of the shop?, thus forming a tied trade in the same maimer as licensed houses are tied to a brewery. The business of bakers, even as at present conducted, is very profitable,^as will be seen by the accountants' certificate herein, but on the large scale upon which the business of this company will be conducted impor- tant economies will result; besides which the com- pany, having its own flour mill, will retain the profits now made by millers on the flour used by the shoos, and the result cannot fail to be highly satisfoctory to the company. The Mill acquired by the Company, which has both steam and water power, is situated at the market town of Ashford, in the county of Kent, the finest wheat- growing county in England, and the wheat is delivered at the Mills free of cost for carriage. It has a frontage to the watercourse of the River Stour, and is within half a mile of stations on the South Eastern and London, Chatham, and Dover Railways. The Mills are equipped with a 40-h.p. engine, by Horn, 10ft. waterwheel, and the usual plant and machinery, and there are also stores, stabling, manager's residence, foreman's house, &c., Ac., Ac. The Bakers' Shops have been carefully selected, and have leases averaging sixteen years, many of which can be still further renewed, and as the trade is entirely a cash one all risk of bad debts is eliminated. The books and accounts of these shops have been examined by Messrs Herbert Watkins and Co., Chartered Accountants (who are well acquainted with the Trade), and they report that the average consumption of Bour was 606 sacks per week, and the net profit, after paying all usual expenses of tbe shops, was upwards of £ 8,8(X)per annum. They have also examined the books of the flour mill, and find that this weekly output of 606 sacks, delivered to the Company's own shops at present prices, represents a further net profit of £ 4216 per annum. The total profits therefore from these two sources amount to over £ 11,000 per annum, which is over 15 per cent. on the entire capital of the Company. In addition to this, as the mills have a capacity con- siderably beyond the present requirements of the shops, the Company will be in a position to dispose of the surplus either in the market or Ly supplying additional shops to be hereafter acquired by the Com- pany, which should still further increase the profits. The Company intend at once to erect an extensive steam bakery, sufficient to supply all its shops, and from the estimates which have been prepared on the basis of the Company's consumption of 600 sacks per week, a saving of 24,000 per annum in making the Bread may be expected. ri he directors are negotiating forasuitable site at Westminster, audaprovisiontl contract has been eotered into for the construction and equipment of the Bakery on the Mouni6 System, which has been found so successful, a licence having been granted to the Company for this purpose. It will be seen, therefore, that the profits from these various sources should result in dividends of trom 20 to 30 per cent. on the capital of the Company. As showing the remunerative character of bread com- panies, reference is made to the following:- The Aerated Bread Company's jEl shares are now quoted on the London Stock Exchange at £ 5 to £ 5 5a per share—or 400 per cent, premium—the last dividend paid by the company being25 per cent. per annum The Bristol Bread Company pay dividends of 35 per cent. per annum. Boland's (Limited) (Capital £ 280,000), a Bread Com- pany started in Dublin in May last. declared an interim dividend In November last of 10 per cent. The Financial News ot Wednesday, 9th January, 1889, Tho in a leading article on "Joint-Stock Bakeries," says Every year has its boom. What will be the boom of 1889 ? There is one form of industry which is likely to have a boom of more or less importance, and that in- dustry is bread-making. The Mills will be managed by Mr Cantrell, who has acted in that capacity for a considerable period, and who is well known on tbe markets. Mr Vollmer, Chairman of the Western Association ot Master Bakers, and a thoroughly practical man, will manage the Bakery, and personaliy visit every shop twice a week. The price fixed by the Vendor for the Freehold Flour Mills, including all Machinery and Plant, with the Fix- tures, Fittings, Goodwill, and riparian rights. Leases of the 32 Shops, together with all Vans, Horses, Carts, Ac., belonging to the same, has been fixed at E55,000, of which two-thirds will be payable in Cash, and one. third in Shares or Cash, at the option of the Directors. Prospectuses and Forms of Application can be ob- tained of the Bunkers and Brokers, or of the Secretary, at the Offices of the Company. The following is the Certificate of the Accountants before referred to Moira-chambers, Ironmonger-lane. Cheapside, B.C.. 28th January, 1839. GENTLEMEN,—We have examined the books and accounts of the businesses proposed to be taken over by the London and County Bread Company (Limited), comprising in all thirty-two Shops, as per Schedule, attached hereto, and we find therefrom that the pre- sent aggregate consumption of Flour at the Shops amouuts to 606 sacks per week, and that this is bring. ing in a net profit at the rate of £ 8.880 per annum. As we understand you have also acquired a Freehold Flour Mill at Ashford, to the abov; profit should therefore be added the wholesale profit which would accrue on the business done by the Mill in supplying the Shops with Flour. On an output of 606 sacks alone per week, which trade would be ensured by the demand of your Shops, this would be a further sum of over E2,216 per annum, or a total of £11,096 per annum. We are, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, (Signed) HERBERT WATKINS and CO., Chartered Accountants. To the Directors of the London and County Bread Company (Limited). W. E. STARTLING CONFESSION. THE ]\< £ YSTERY OF A m ILLIONAIRE's GRAVE. HOW A. T. STEWARTS GRAVE WAS RIFLED IN NEW YORK. BY GORDON STABLES, M.D., R.N. (Author of "From Pole to Pole," The Cruise of the Snowbird," On Special SerTioe," Jack Locke: A Tale of the War and the Ware," tc., &c., &0.) THIS THRILLING NEW ROMANCE WILL COMMENCE IN THE CARDIFF rjl IM E S AND IIOUTH- WALES WEEKLY IVWS WEEK ENDING MARCH 2ND. It is with a feeling of unusual satisfaction that we are now able to give to our readers a story which will unravel a mystery which has for years puzzled some of the SMARTEST JQETECTIVES in the world Those who delight in follow. ing the gtadual disclosure of a dark and intricate plot will now have the opportu- < nity of investigating perhaps the best laid plans which the mind of man ever conceived. Ever since that stormy night in Novem- ber, 1878, when the body of A. T. Stewart, the great American millionaire, was gECRETLY J^EMOVED from the family vault in St. Mark's Churchyard. New York, efforts have been made to discover how and by whom the robbery was committed. Judge Hilton, Mr Stewart's executor, strove by every means in his power to bring the criminals to justice; the best detectives were em. ployed and a reward of 25*000 Dollars was offered, but no clue to the whereabouts of the body or of the thieves was ever obtained. After the lapse of a considerable time negotiations were opened up by a mysterious person calling himself Romaine for the return of the body on payment of the sum of 100,000 D OLLARS. No questions to be asked. This offer was declined by Judge Hilton, but eventually he agreed to pay the sum of 25,000 dollars for the body, and to give up all efforts to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice. The body was handed over (in return for the 25,000 dollars) to a young relative of Mrs Stewart at a lonely spot near New York, the men who brought the body to the spot belli; masked and dis- gui-ed. These are the main features of the case upon which Dr Stables has founded hia JJEMARKABLE JJOMANCE. The facts about Mr Stewart's body would in all probability have remained unknown but for a fortunate circumstance which placed the history of the whole career of the man ROMAINE IN THE POSSES- SION OF OUR AUTHOR. To a large extent the story will be told in Romaine's own words, but we leave to our author the task of manipulating the facts at his disposal, and of showing how and why Romaine came to commit the crime. Suffice it to say that in his hands the great jyjYSTERY OF A m ILLIONAIRE'S GRAVE is solved, and the narration of the events whichllead up to the final catastrophe forms the I OST gENSATIONAL gTORY ot modem times. Stewart's career is too well known to require chronicling here. Starting with a very modest capital, be rose by rapid steps until he counted his wealth not by thou. sands, but by millions. It was not by any wild or reckless speculation that this great result was attained, but by strict integrity, and an early recognition of the advantages of ready money payments. In speaking of him in 1876, the Times savs "Take him all in all, be was a rare in. stance of a successful millionaire. Begin- ning with aimost nothing. and, by sheer honesty in trade, ending with more millions than, perhaps, be was himself aware of, he was, strictly speaking, the architect of his own fortune, and, unlike many of his class, boundless success never made him forget either his past history or his early friends. His philanthropy seems to have been all thrown to the four winds. He founded a Home for Women-it is now albotel. His marble palace is tenantless, and his pro- digious business enterprises are in other hands. He has a cathedral for a memorial, but the resting place of his body is at pre- sent unknown, for thieves have robbed the grave."—Extract from Th Post. With most men, even millionaires, death closes the story In Stewart s case it was not ao. The most romantic chapter Of his eventful history has yet to be told." WILLIAM CHAMBERS (Edinburgh). Such are the main foundations of our story, but it is upon the WRITTEN CONFESSION of the reported chief actor in the crime that we depend. A foe-simile of the first page of Romaine's MS. will appear in the first instalment of the story. THE BEST STORY OF THE DAY.
