STARTLING CONFESSION. THE MYSTERY OF A m ILLIONAIR E's Q^R AVE. HOW A. T. STEWART'S GRAVE WAS RIFLED IN NEW YORK. BY GORDON STABLES, M.D., R.N. (Author of "From Pole to Pole," The Cruise of the Snowbird," On Special Service," Jxek Locke: A Tale of the War and the Ware," 4c., &c., &c.) f2 THIS THRILLING NEW ROMANCE WILL COMMENCE IN THE CARDIFF RJLIMES AND jgOUTH Y^TALES "^TEEKLY J^TEWS WEEK ENDING MARCH 2ND. It is with a feeling of unusual satisfaction that we are now able to give to our readers a story which will unravel a mystery which has for years puzzled some oi the GMARTEST JJETECTTVES in the world Those who delight in fallow- ing the giadual disclosure of a dark and intricate plot will now have the opportu. nity of investigating perhaps the best laid plans which the mind of man ever conceived. Ever since that- stormy might in Novem- ber, 1878, when the body of A. T. Stewart, tbe great American millionaire, was GECRETLY REMOVED s from the family vault in St. Mark's Churchyard. New York, efforts have been made to discover how and by whom the robbery was committed. Judge Hilton. Mr Stewart's executor, strove by every means in his power to bring the criminals to justice; the best detective* were em- ployed and a reward of 25,000 Dollars was offered, but no clue to the whereabouts of the body or of the thieves was ever obtained. After the lapse of a considerable time negotiations were opened up by a mysteripus person calling himself Romaine for the return of the body on payment of the sum of 100,000 DOLLARS. No questions to be asked. This offer was declined by Judge Hilton, but eventually he agreed to pay the sum of 25,000 dollars for the body, and to give up all efforts to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice. The body was handed over (in return for the 25,000 dollars) to a young relative of Mrs Stewart at a lonely spot near New York, the mea who brought the body to the spot bein; masked and dis- guided. These are the main features of the ease upon which Dr stables uas founded bis R EMARKABLE R OMANCE, The facts about Mr Stewart's body would in all probability have remained unknown but for a fortunate circumstance which placed the history of the whole career of the man ROMAINE IN THE POSSES- SION OF OUR AUTHOR. To a large extent the story will be told in Romaine's own words, but we leave to our author the task of manipulating the facts at his disposal, and of showing how and why Romaine came to commit the crime. Suffice it to say that in his bands the great MYSTERY OF A MILLIONAIRE'S GRAVE. m W is solved, and the narration of the events whichtead up to the final catastrophe forms the MOST SENSATIONAL STORY ot modern times. Stewart's career is too well known to require chronicling here. Starting with a very modest capital, he rose by rapid steps until he counted his wealth not by thou- sands, but by millions. It was not by any wild or reckless speculation that this great result was attained, but by strict integrity, and an early recognition of the advantages of ready money payments. In speaking of him in 1876, the Times says :— "Take him all in all, he was a rare in- stance of a successful millionaire. Begin. DiDe; with almost nothing, and, by sheer honesty in trade, ending with more millions than, perhaps, be was him"lf aware of. he was, strictly speaking, the architect of his own fortune, and, unlike many of his class, boundless success never made him forget either his past history or his early friends." His philanthropy seems to have been all thrown to the four winds. He founded a Home for Women-it is now a hotel. His marble palace is tenantless, and his pro. digious business enterprises are in other hands. He has a cathedral for a memorial, but the resting place of his body is at pre- sent unknown, for thieves have robbed the grayt.Extract from The Post. "With most men, even millionaires, death closes the story. In Stewart's can it was not so. The most romantic chapter of his eventful history has yet to be told." WiLLiAM CHAMBERS (Edinburgh). Such are the main foundations of our story, but it is upon the WRITTEN CONFESSION p of the reported chief actor in the crime that we depend. A fac-sitmle of the first page of Romaine's MS. will appear in the first instalment of the story. THE BEST STORY OF THE DAY.
