------Occasional Notes. --
Occasional Notes. BY-"A SCRU;nLKH." A Contributor Writes :De,,ir old "Pen- pusher," otherwise "Scribbler," I fancy you will be pleased to know that a set of newly done up coaches have been put on the Good- wick and Clynderweu branch of railroad. It was like this I found out. My friend's bone- shaker wanted overhauling, so he* decided on taking it to the expert cycle mid motor mechanic, Mr Scowcroft. at the 1'entre Engineering Works, Lotterston, the proprietor of which ia Mr T Williams. Starting from Fishguard he, as usual, was several minutes late for the train and, consequently, hurrying 21 underaboilingjulysunwasexuding like a watering-pot on reaching Goodwick station' Luckily, the train happened to be late or, like the man who fetl out of bed, he would not have been in it. Bang went two saxpences and two bits of pasteboard received in exchange. In he jumped, the carriage being that next to the guard's van. Before taking his seat he looked round and up and down the line of coaches just to make sure he had not mistaken the branch train for the through boat express to Paddington. But on second thought he concluded that the new harbour had not opened, so he set himsetfto examining the decorations. You remember how like dirty unshaken door mats the cushions used to be how the dust would cornc out as soon as one sat on them. Fancy chiftjon, silk and other delicate fabrics, which enter into ladies' dresses, hugging the filth-laden creton of railway carriages I WeU, instead, some nice new stuff has taken the ptace of the horrid, dusty covers, while the varnish has been renewed and some of the pt'cLtiesH pictu cs of other places, ever taken by snap- shottist, iastened up in frames for passengers bo gaze at. My triend thinks the company wondrously considerate to renovate the branch coaches but then the company would rather carry passengers than dust and microbes it is more business-like as well as more profitable. What surprises people who look at the hygienic side of things however, is that the company did not replace the usual texture of the cushions and upholstering with leather for the sake of health and cleanliness. They have some notion of hygiene because there are framed notices on the partitions warning passengers against spitting on the floors. Everybody will agree wiuh that injunction, but to my friend's disgust a bronchial biped h'ad disregarded the notice and set the company ?t defiance by a nauseating act enou?n to heave one's inside out to glance at. _On looking round the compartment a greasy garbed son of the soil was seated at one corner in a semi-drunken condition, but he was not -half so obnoxious as the noor spot referred to. By his side was a huge bundle. Presently, on seemg the other gaze at the pictures, the barmy one said he knew all the places well that were pictured.—There is no limit to a person's knowledge when thus stimulated.—In a careless, happy-go-lucky mood though the toiler was, he shewed a certain amount of bashfulness in opening his bundle, which proved to be full of bread and beef, enough to feed a dozen navvies. Noth- ing loth, he proceeded to tear off about a pound of beef and with it a junk of bread, forming part of a cake the circumference of a "crochan." The meat was scored here and there to assist the cooking and subsequent breaking up process. In beery accents the knight of the shovel muttered I'm hungry and I a'int hungry, if y'cn understand like paid two bob fer this bloomin lot, awm on me way to Cardi&;I'm a lodger." The fellow-passenget was wondering how any but the stomach of an ostrich could digest such fare when the clay stained figure arose and commenced groping for the inside handie of the carriage-door, the train being about two miles from Letterston. Fearing a tragedy my friend jumped up just as the navvy had put his hand out and unfastened the door. What are you up to ? roared my friend, at the same time seizing the navvy's coat. Its allright, awm just —————" Shut that door sharply came the voice of the alert guard in the next compartment, and, evidently knowing he was committing a breach of the bye-laws, the man quickly pulled the door to, and after turning the handle to its original place sat down. That he feared the Company's stern hand was evident, for during the remain- ing few minutes he repeatedly inquired if he would be summoned. At Letterston my friend left the compartment. Hoping that the newly painted and upholstered coaches would carry passsengers having Slightly more regard for cleanliness than some who occupied them for the initial run. It appears that gas has not to be the only means of lighting in Fishguard. A wag said the other day that the reflection from the Harbour arc lamps would illuminate Fishguard and dispense with both gas and paraffin, but as will be noticed in another column, the North Pembrokeshire Cas Company have notified the District Council of their intention to apply for a Provisional Order giving them power to supply electricity in Fish- guard and district. When first the North Pem- brokeshire Gas Company obtained powers fur lighting Fishguard a great many of the house- holders decided in favour of electricity as being more up-to-date. However, practical experience with both forms prove that each has its advantages and, until cooking and heating by electricity have become more general, the handy gas jets are decidedly the best for every-day purposes. In the largest towns and cities, where electricity has long been in use, gas still holds, and must con- tinue, a most utilitarian position. I can picture Fishguard with all the latest systems of drainage, lighting and scavenging methods in operation. What a model of salubrity and ricturesqueness this old world town will then be ? No" Pandora's box of evils to menace the public health no unsightly, disgusting middens and ash heaps in t.he back ground, no skulls and bones of dead animals lying about the streets, nor obnoxious odours from open streams of slop and waste water. Scavengers and carts will clear away the refuse daily each and every house will have its out onices fitted with Hushing tanks and connected with the main sewer and, with the banishment of the crude system at present in vogue, unsavoury discussions on the "urban" council will cease. That will be something in the nature of the millenium as regards Fiahguard. Said one of the District Councillors at the last meeting on Mr Liddle's letter respecting Penslade being read Another Londoner coming here to dictate to us what we shall do The people down below are mighty clever, everybody knows that; that explains their resentment to being dictated to by anyone. But the other day, when Fishguard refused to be swayed by the dictates of a Londoner, the very people who scorn Mr Liddle's dictations flatly refused to recognise that self-same characteristic in the Fisbguard Parochial Committee when that body estimated the services of another Londoner at a less figure than that put upon them by the District Council. They should, methinks, first cast out the beam which is in their own eye." I wonder how the Rarfats would take it if Fishgua.rdia.ns were to tell them how to spend their own money. Fishguard has a series of costly schemes afoot, most of the money for which must come out of Fishgua.rds' coffers, yet the buculics "below" wiseacre-like, not only I dictate, but insist en spending, freely, the rate. payers' money without Fishguard having a voice in the matter. I am surprised that Fi?hguardiana take things so calmly. A public indignation meeting followed by an appeal to the Local Government Board for common justice would at least, draw attention to such tyranny and injustice. Fishguard is quite as capable o managing her own affairs as ever the down below were or, for that matter, ever will be.
