Up and Down the Coast. To my mind, the deith of young children, in their teens from consumption^jn homes situ tie iu the Leari of the country, is an ugly blot on the administrative and educational bodies of the county of Fembroke.and on those of any other ag'i uliural county. Teach the rural community the evils of drinking impure water, of excluding fresh air from their dwel- lings, particutas !y their sleeping apat tments; of heaping up lilth around their houses, star. ing pLs pig-wash in the vicinity of their homes let the authorities insist on the ol sevvauon cf these few and essential practices sod the need for a Sanatorium will b-.i ron est.' .1id to you, who dweii in this breezy, healthy place swept, by the germ-destroying air from I bê ocean, save yourselves and your children from premature glave. The town is itssummg the apect of holiday- making. line weather and visitors aie transforming sleepy dullness into life and vivacity. Lively limes are now experienced at eventide urd, There's hot times in the old town at This Yankee-doodle ditty applies, ig Lt now, to the little scenes of last week. Iu spite of the cheap and nasty notoriety some of our young fellows gain by setting the town on lite, in the way I wit- nessed it last week, there is nothing to re- commend it nor to add to the credit of the pariiclraior3 nor the town. What pleasure or profit intelligent men—as some of them are—find in brawling lawlessness passes the comprehension of sober-minded people. On Friday evening the Square was in a state of turbulence when a German-band formed up and commenced a well-known air Immedi- ately many of the clief figures in the orgie gathered lound the musicians in lather an unceremonious fashion, one buriy figure, evi- dently the ringleader, making some attempt to poke fuss at the baLd which, happily for the ot the place, took no notice but continued on the tenour of way. the crowd looked on, the music exercising that spell of charm sail to soften rocks or bend the kuott.d oak. J ( I mistake not, the tune, Q-iotu of tho Earth,' rendered uncommonly w. 11 by the Germans, soothed the savage brea U it spite ut mmK being up to the Piimsol mark' with barmy beer. Were the musicians to remain during the waim weather the task of the pclica oflicers would no doubt be lessened. It ia not often that itinerary possess a cornet-player with the bkiJl of the one in question, for there was an absence of harshness, the notes being subdued and mellow. Talking of bands, I am surprised the local amateurs do not revive the local band. Surely, if Newport and Maenclochog are able to maintain such organizations Fish- guard ought. This theme also bungs up the subject of the correspondence going oa in the Echo on 1 Sunday Concerts.' I notice Mr O. D. •Jones asks that writers on the question should discard their nom de plume. Though I think that the opinions expressed would be more weighty if properly signed I fail to see the force of the demand considering the nature of the subject—admittedly, a ticklish one. Whv not tackle the point raised by the Parish Council instead of beating about the bush ? It is interesting to note in a Cardiff daily paper that United Wales is the motto of the inhabitants of the Principality in all de. partments of life. The latest proof is afforded by the amalgamation of the North Wales Black Cattle Society with that of South XValt, s The amalgamated society will, it is hoped, do good work in the way of improving the breed of cattle throughout Wales, and particularly in maintaining the excellence of the indigenous breed. In the 4 religious and educational departments,' however, there is undeniable discord.

IRamsey Island Sold.
Ramsey Island Sold. The announced sale of Ramsey Island, off St David's, created some interest in many who have money to invest. On Monday last, Mr Junes, proprietor of the most extensive cabinet making businesses in the Principality, at LlanelJy, spent the week-end at Goodwick, and journeyed to the Island to view the same with the object of purchase. With MrJones was Mr Davies, of the Emporium, Llanelly, with their wives, all of whom were delighted with the beautiful scenery of North Pembroke- shire. As one of the wealthiest business men this side of Cardiff, Mr Jones predicts a glow- ing future for Goodwick. Especially keen was he on the purchase of the common land, which embraces the whole of the area the Pembrokeshire Estates Company claim for the deposited £ 700. He considered the hillside a site of great value for building purposes. No one should be allowed to pile up bricks and mortar haphazard on the hill-side, but nicely arranged terraces ought to be insisted upon by the local authority-which just now is, for all practical purposes, impotent. It is one of the foremost duties of local administrative bodies to protect the interests of those who placed them in power. If builders be allowed to erect structures wherever tlrey please the hillside will soon present an ugly shape, as ir- regular as a lield of mole hills. It is high time someone, or company, stepped in to regulate the setting up of buildings. Reverting to Hamsey Island, which contains an area of 604 acres, and on the south and in- cluded in the sale was Barry Island, contain- ing 20 acres, while on the mainland is the site of St Justinian s Chapel. The upset price was t3,000, but Mr Watnoy said the auction- eers did not regard that as the value of the property. "My bid he added, •« is £ 3 000 and unless there is a higher bid tho property is sold. It is worth double the money if it is worth a halfpenny." The bidding started at Z3,100, and advanced by iucremements of £ 100, till £ 3,500 was reached, at which price it was knocked down to Mr J. AVynford Philipps, Lydstep Haven, the member of Par- liament for the County. We may feel proud of the purchaser, who in turn will add no little to the esteem in which he is already held as landlord and farmer, as well as representative of the people.
Cancer on the Increase.
Cancer on the Increase. An Official and authoritative statement upon the above subject proves without doubt, by comparative statistics, that Cancer and Can- cerous Growth is lately on the increase amongst the inhabitants of Great Britain and especially so, Ireland. Unfortunately up to now medical men and scientists have nos been able to account for this alarming state of affairs or provide a remedy. An Ointment called "MANNINA" has established a won- derful reputation in South Africa, and about 18 months ago the preparation was brought r, to this Country, and has since been carefully tested in a limited area in the County of Pem- broke, Wale3, with most satisfactory results, and has effected several Certified cures of Cancerous Growths, Lupus, Piles, Eczema, Blood poisoning, &c ,&c. This remarkable pre- paration can be obtained of all Chemists at Is l^d, Qd, and 4s 6d per pot, for Ulcerated \V onnds, Blood-poisoning, Eczema, &c.; and os <Jd, 4s bd, and 8s Gd per pot, for Cancer, Tumours, Lupua, &e. or wiil be sent post free direct fr,)- the Proprietors, MAIN-STREET, FISHGUARD. HERE AND THERE.
HERE AND THERE. Cardigan is cff ling a silver cup as cham- pic.n piiza at the regatta on theTivy. For the National Eisteddfod at Rhy! in nearly every class the English entries out- number the Welsh and there is great possi- bility of the trophi s going- this year over the border. Malta and Ireland is represented, but not Pembrokeshire. Extensive preparations have been marie for the grand beziar and fancy fair at Carmar- then yesterday and to-day in aid of the West Wales Sanatorium. The Lords Lieutenant of Cat matthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Cardiganshire, with the Mayors and Sheriffs of the county towns and other important personages are to be present, while cheap tickets are issuedfrom all parts. Last week Messrs T Rule Owen and Son sold ty auction the farm of Treithel, com- prising a hom-stead and about 21 acres of land, t, near Caervarchell, Solva, which was purchased by Dr Williams, of St David's, for £ 835. Freehold property, known as Provi- dence Place, Portfi-^ld-gate, near Haverford- west, h use, buildings, garden, and twtlve acres of pasture, was sold for £590 to Mr T H B James, of the Three Crowns, Haver- fordwest. Welsh marksmen have not figured so prominently at the Bisley rifle meeting this year as last. The King's Priz was won by Private S J Perry, Canada, with an aggre cate in all three stages of 321 points. Lieutenant W T Davies, Llanelly, who won the Kiug's Prizi last year with a total of 311, scored onjy 303 points on Saturday last, or 13 points below the splendid aggregate (321) of the winning Canadian who, by the way, is a pattern-cutter in a shoe factory. This years' silver medal ist is the R- v C J Ferguscn Davie, of Punjaub. The representative session of the Weslayan Conference closed on Saturday, when several interesting reports were presented, and a resolution was passed advocating the closing of public-houses at 10 o'clock and the abolition of barmaids. Mr J Wynfoid Philipps, M.P., has pre- sented the committee of the Cardigan Agri- cultural Show with a massive double handled silver goblet on an ebony plinth for the winner in tba class for the best black beast in the show, no animal to compete that has ever won a cup given by him at any show in South Wales, the cup to be won twice (not necessarily in succession) to become the pro- perty of the winner. A Welsh Marksman.—Colonel-Sergt. T Lewb", clerk to Mr Picton Evaus, Cardigan won several money p;iz>s at Bisley last week. The Education Act of 1870, according to Mr B R1 es, C.C, formerly of Dinas, involved great expence in administration. At the Cardigan Board of Guardians, on Thursday last, and of which he is chairman, he read a paper on the rates and expenditure of the Caidigan Udon and, under the head of School Boards, made some significant rerairks, seeing that Mr Rees was a very active sup- porter of the Act referred to. At the time it was specifically stated that 3d in the £ would not le exceeded as a rate tor the schools. Now Mr Rees puts forward the statement that although the schools have done excellent work they are very expensive. Instead of the threepenny rate there were at the present time in the Cardigan Union only twelve parishes whose school rate was less than Is in the £ In seven parishes thd rate is from Is to Is 41 in the 9, whiles in Moylgrove it is 2i 21 in the £ The total amount of school rate last year in their Union was £ 1,463, in which the Borough of Cardigan is not iaclu ded.
