Local M P's and the Licensing Bill. At the meeting of the Haverfordwest Board of Guardians in inl,-ty L resolution condemning the Licensing Bill was passed and it was agreed to forward copies to the local members of Parliament. Mr J E H Rogers, the clerk,reported having received the following interesting replies :— DEAR SIH,-I am obliged for a copy you sent me of the resolution passed by the Guardians of the Haverfordwest Union against the Licensing Bill. The resolution has my hearty sympathy. Yours faithfully, J. W. PHILLIPS. DEAn SlR,-I desire to acknowledge the receipt of copy of resolution adopted by the Guardians of the Haverfordwest Union, and which has received my earnest consideration. I quite recognize that much of the poverty and pauperism is due to excess in consumption of intoxicating liquor, but I fail to see how it is due to what the resolution describes as the influence of the drink trade," and I am at a loss to know whether, in the term drink trade, unlicensed as well as licensed houses are included, and I further fail to understand what the great ditiiculty of finding adequate relief for the deserving power has to do with the Liceusing Bill now before Parliament. There is nothing in the Bill which" increases the influence of the trade," nor does it propose to "divert money from National into private channels," and I would recommend that the Bill itself be examined. I believe it to be a really earnest attempt to dcminish the evils that have followed an excessive issue of licenses. I recognize that the reduction must be gradual, as otherwise unlicensed sellers will replace properly conducted and carefully supervised houses—that this reduction will keep pace with the altered habits of the community, and that without any injustice, and that, without any expense to the public, the desired end will be accomplished. There are, however, several points on which in my opinion, considerable improvements could be made, and I shall watch its progress with care, and shall be glad to receive any practical suggestions in this direction from the Board. There has been a great deal of oratory about temperance legislation for years past, and many ideas have been thrown out, but this is really the first practical and practicable scheme that has been brought forward, and until something, that could be brought into effect, and that is better for the purpose, is actually placed before Parliament I shall certainly support this Bill as a step in the direction every thoughtful man would desire we should follow. Pembrokeshire Light Railway. Meetings to further the project of a light railway for the district of Roose, between Milford Haven and St Bride's Bay, and from Haverfordwest to St David's, were held last week at Roch, Solva and St David's. They were called by Mr A W Massy, J.P., of Roch, and were well attended, the subject having aroused great interest. The suggestion with regard to the Itoose scheme was to carry it out as a private venture if the Great Western Railway could not be induced to undertake it. The St David's section, however, is proposed to be effected by the adoption of the Light Railways Act, under which the County Council provides one quarter, the Imperial Exchequer one quarter, and the other half of the other capital must be raised privately. The engin- eers who have interested themselves in the matter are Colonel J EGoldwyer and Mr S W Yockney, of London, who prepared sketch maps for the convenience of those at the meetings. Their proposal is that the line should go south from Brawdy and Roch so as to tap an extensive anthracite coalfleld lying along the St Bride's Bay, and also connect with the Kooso branch at Broadway. From there the line would, it is hoped, join the G.W.R. main at Denant level crossing, and from there have running powers over the two miles between that and Haverfordwest. The St David's section is about 2C miles, and is estimated to cost £ 1:30,000, or aC5000 per mile. These matters were fully laid before the meetings, and resolutions were adopted supporting the proposal and concurring with an application for the putting into operation of the Light Railways Act.

Ministei lal.—A correspondent writes :— We siucerely regret the announcement made a lew Sundays ago of the decision of the Rev- John Morgan, Ambleston, to resign the p is- torate of the Walton and Ambleston O.M. Churches, which will take effect at the end of August. Although his stay in our midst has be.n of a short duration, vet it has been long 0 enough to prove that his departure will be a serioas lo:-s to the churches of our denomina- tion in this district. Both churches have greatly benefitted from his services,particular- ly the Ambleston church, which has increased both financially and in the number of commu- nicants since his advant here. The young people and the children of both churches will keenly feel the loss of his services. His work amongst them is greatly appreciated, and is attended with great success, as proved by the results obtained at the Sunday school examination and the cymmaufaoedd pwngc of the district. The gymmanfa ganu will lose its energetic secretary, the success of the last oue held at Woodstock being in a great measure due to his efforts. Truly, our loss will he great iudire l. Daeth i fyny o dan yr anhawsderau mwyaf, a hyny trwy yr ymdrech a'r penderfyniad cadarnaf. Gwraig weddw oedd ei fam, ac efe oedd ei hunig fab, gydag un chwaer. Cafodd" le fel is- y athraw yn ysgol Trealaw, Morganwg, ond gorfu arno ei rhoddi i fyny. Bu am fisoedd lawer yn rhodio glanau yr lorddonen, a diau iddo ddewis ei fan i groesi. Gwelodd dynerweh mawr oddiar law ei gymydogion, yn enwedig Mrs Davies, Charring-Cross. Bu farw mewn llawn hyder ffydd yn lesu Grist. Cymerodd ei angladd le y dydd lau canlynol.
