LONDON, Thursday. No further ,change has been made in the Bank rate of discount, a -n',l the excitement in the Money Market is now dy- 'oz down. There is still a good deal of uncertainty respecting the possible gold movements, but feL' the moment, at least, the worst of the pinch is over. Next week should witness aa easier market, both here and in America, but it is never- theless to be hoped that the five per cent, rate here will be made as effectiva as possible, as the Bank of England is certainly not in a position to lose gold just now. In fact, the present stock 1 ishing requires replenishing. Great caution will be needed for some little time in conducting all monetary operations. "Call" money to-day was quoted at .5 to 4 per cent; discounts were quieter, tinea months' bank bills being nego- tiated at ijjj <" 4 £ per cent. Paris cheque exchange, 10.25 to 10 222 Berlin—short, 20.49. The Imperial B-mk of Germany has raised the rate from 4 to 5 per cent. The Bank of England return shows some very important changes, and the position is much weaker than IN i-s expected, reserve having de- clined £ 2,122,937, or to;010,260,482, whilst the pro- porti"« "f ieseiva to liabilities, which last week was 42.13 10, is now only 33'3 per cent. The in- crease in note circulation is £ 1,213,625. That there has been a good demand for loans is clear from the increase of L3,026,565 in other securi- ties, and a portion ot this has gone to swell the total of other deposits, which have gained £ 2,015,133. The return is unquestionebly a very weak one, and unless the course of the money markets be permanently changed, it will not be I long before we have a 6 per cent. rate. Govern- ment securities have increased £ 496,609. Stock Exchange Markets have become quieter. A much more hopeful view is taken of the situa- tion. The rush to sell has been checked, and 3he tendency now ii all the other way. The bulk of chauges are in cons^ononce favourable. Consols closed at 96 to 96i for money, and 97 to 97 £ for November account; 2-| per Cent. I LATEST MARKETS. CORN'. BIRMINGHAM.—Moderate supply of English wheat, the prices of which were the turn dearer, Foreign wheat unaltered, except old Russian, which held for 6d advance. Barley and maize easiei. Oats unaltered. BRISTOL, Tiiarsday,-A quiet trade. English wheat made fully last week's rates foreign firm, with upward movement in some cases. Grinding barley in sellers' favour, malting a good trade, prices ranging from 263 to 33s per 400 lbs. Maize without any change. Oats- in some cases a trifle higher. CATTLE. BlIUfrNGHAM, Thursday.- Prices :-Beef, ód to.7id, few at 71d mutton, 7d to 9id, few 9.4d; veal, 7d to Sid per lb. Bacon pigs, 9s Od to 9s 4d sows, 7s to 7s 6d porkers, 103 to 10s 6d per score. BRISTOL, Thursday.—There was a small supply of beef, but the quality was mostly inclifferent-best sort, Ms Irish, 60s co 63s other sorts, 56s to 53s per cwt. Sheep were also shorter-cboice wethers, 8sd; ewes, 7id per lb. Two thousand store cattle from Ireland, but quiet saie and lower prices accepted, but not all sold. The steamer Strathblane, before reported at Colombo, proceeded on Wednesday and landed 150 baskets of sugar in a WHt and damaged condition. A later telegram respecting the steamer Croesus, which is ashore near Skelleftea, states that all the compartments are water-filled and quite exposed to half the compass, and the bottom is uneven witb large bouiders. A north-east heavy sea prevents salvage operations.

TRIAL TRIP OF A CARDIFF STEAMER. On Tuesday the screw steamship Mary Thomas, built to the order of Messrs Evan Thomas. Radcliffe, and Co., Bute Docks. left the Tyne. laden with about 3130 tons of coal as cargo aid bunkers, bound for Venice. As soon as the vessel was clear of the river she was tested on the measured mile, and despite the fact that there was a strong sea running, a speed of fully 10 knots per hour was maintained. The Mary Thomas, after discharging her cargo at Venice, will probably proceed to the B.ack Sea to load homewards.

To is travelling menagerie will form, it is understood, an important part of the CIvic, procesion. Sir Henay Isaacs has, it is stated, no intention of drawing upon home circuses for his supply of beasts, for lie proposes to go to Mr Baruum or, rather the friends of Mr Barnum have come to him. Soma necessary negotiations have been conducted by intermediaries, for tha great American showman, whose company arrives in this country per special steamer about the end of this month, wished, if he were sure of its acceptance, to pay a compliment to the British people through the Lord Mayor. At any rate, that is the way he puts it, although it is not denied that his proposal would mean a magnificent advertisement. Mr Barnum, ac- customed to colossal undertakings, would no doubt have been prepared to run the whole show at his own charge. He would have turned into the streets of the City hit troupes of trained ponies, zebras, camels, and oiapbants his imposing cavalcades, hia bands, his fifty carved and gilded chariots, painted to iilus- trate mythological subjects, his perambulatory tableaux vivctnts, and all the rest of his world- famed attractions. And his experienced managers would, on their part, have unhesitatingly agreed to march the regulation route in a stipulated limit of time, for, as Mr Starr says, In New York, Mr Barnum has a Lord Mayor's show everyjday." It remains to be seen whether he will be content to play a secondary part in tha November pageant, for it is pretty certain that the Hon. Lewis Wing- field, to whom the arrangements have been com- mitted by the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs, will not require mythological chariots and theatrical pro- perties of that kind, whose very goz-geouiness might eclipse the glcnes of the chief magistrates coach But if the American Showman is willing, he may be asked to lend animals and attendants suggestive of the various colonies and dependencies ol this Empire. Elephants have already represented India in the city on Lord Mayor's Day; possibly Mr Barnum may oblige also with a few lions and tigers, cheetahs and other beasts of prey. A bear ot a seal would stand for Canada monkeys would do for anywhere; and a plucked ostrich might represent the Cap?. Australia might be typified either by a wild rabbit or a tame kangaroo, unless the committee preferred a lauglnug jackass. Apart altogether from the zoological features, the Lord Mayor's Show of 1889, commemorative, as it will be, of the 700th anniversary of the corporation, will be a remarkable display, exceeding in com- pleteness and unity of effect anything which haa been attempted of late years.

Princesses Victoria and Maud of Wales return to England next tfeek from Denmark, and they will pay a. visit to the Duke and Duchess of Fife at Mar Lodge before going to Sandringham to await the arrival of their parents, A sort of bad tempered understanding has been patched up between Prince Henry of BaMenberg and the Duke of Fife, the first result of which was that Prince Henry and Princess Beatrice dined aud slept at New Mar L')dge on Friday week. The wedding present of the Greek merchants in London to the Duke of Sparta. and Princess Sophia of Prussia consists of a superb dessert service of solid gold, enclosed in a rosewood cabinet, with bras3 mouutings, and lined with blue velvet. It is accompanied by a similar cabinet, containing a set of gold spoons and forks to match the service. The Norfolk papars announce that Baron Hirsch is negotiating with Lord Cholmondeley for the purchase of the Houghton Hall estate for £ 300,000. Houghton has been in the market for several years. It is a magnificent house, and the park was formerly the finest 111 tho county, but for many years past tha place has bseo much neglected. Tho proposed marriage between Prince Christian of Denmark, the eldest son of the Orown Prince, and Princess Margarat of Prussia has been abandoned, in consequence of the oppo- sition of the Emperor of Russia and the Duke of Cumberland, the latter having declared that if the betrothal of the couple was officially announced he would never again hold any sort of communication with the Court of Copenhagen, and the Duchess is said to have shared his feelings of indignation. I hoar that the Duka and Duchess of Edinburgh are not likely ever again to live in England for any long period, and they will divide their time between Coburg and St Petersburg. The osten- tatious manner in which the Duke avoided meet- ing the Prince of Wales during the last three weeks was intended to make manifest his entire disapproval of Princess Louise's marriage and I learn that his visit to Balmoral was anything but a success, as he positively declined to hold any sort of communication with the Duke and Duches" of Fife, and disconcerted his mother by allusion to the well-known opinions of the Prince Consort respecting Royal marriages, and by repeating the acrid criticisms of the Empress Frederick and the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Although Wiikie Collins went very little into society during the last 20 years of hia life, he retained all his charming social qualities till the commencement of his fatal illness. A very bad impression was made by the Cesare- witch at the German autumn manoeuvres. He is a delicate, stupid-looking lad, with execrable manners. As a proof of his glaring want of tact it my be mentioned that he persisted in addressing the Gorman officers in French, although he speaks their own language very well. The Emperor William was palpably disgusted by the manifold gaucherics of his boorish guest, and treated him with the most frigid courtesy. After the State banquet, when the Emperor and the Cesarewitch passed slowly through the saloons, the Russian Princa did not in any way acknow- ledge the salutations he received, and his osten- tatious indifference excited a variety of caustic criticisms. There is not a shadow of foundation for the report that the Archduchess Stephanie contem- plates contracting a morganatic marriage with a Hungarian nobleman. This palpably nonsensical story originated with some imaginative Berlin journals, and it has quickly reached London. The Archduchess Stephanie is by no means the sort of woman to marry out of her own rank. and, after her former experience of that honourable estate, I should think that s-be will not be in a hurry again to change her condition. The Archduchess could not marry without the consent of both the Emperor of Austria and the King of the Belgians, and they certainly will not sanction any mesalli- ance which might prejudice the future of her daughter, the Archduchess Elizabeth.

=- DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN JOCKEY We regret to have to announce the death of Bruck shaw, the prominent north-country rider, which occurred late on Tuesday night. Whilst riding Mr Whipp's Calyx in the Musselburgh Plate at the Edinburgh Meeting last Friday, Bruckshaw was thrown and received internal injuries, which woie thought lightly of at the time—in fact, it was generally considered that nothing mora than a severe shaking was the outcome of the accident; but the horseman gradually sank, and succumbed to his injuries as stated above. Bruck- shaw was born at Asbton-under-Lyne on August 27th, 1853, and was consequently in his thirty- seventh year. His residence was at Beverley, and he was more especially identified with Tom Green's Aragon House establishment. He has had a good deal of riding in his time, and he last season bad the very creditable record of forty successes out of 157 attempts.
