JOHNSTOWN. YOUNG PEOPLE'S GUILD.-—Mr G W Hughes, G. and L., read a paper on "Music and Musicians" before the mem- bers of the Young People's Guild connec- ted with the English Congregational Church on Thursday evening last. The Rev T Arthur Thomas, presided over an exceptionally large attendance. Mr Hughes first of all defined music and re- counted the position and development of harmony. He declared that the greatest service of music was intended for the san- ctuary. Very interesting were his com- parisons of the great masters, the father of the Oratorio, 8ach, noted for the de- velopment of the fugal forms of music, Haydn, father of the Symphony Mozart, who worked upon the principles laid down by Haydn Beethoven gave position to the pianoforte Mendelssohn and the concert overture and songs without words. He went on to trace the inSuence of these works on the world and gave a very in- teresting account of Handel's life.
