WALES AND THE FLAG.
WALES AND THE FLAG. Editor of the LONDON WELSHMAN AND KELT. SIR,-It must assuredly be a matter for general regret that the Principality has so far, received but scant recognition in the way of representation on the national flag of Great Britain, the Union Jack." Undoubtedly, Wales, of all countries, should be so represented, seeing that its people are the descen- dants of the Cymry, the original race of Britain, and have contributed not a little to the present greatness of the British Empire. To a glorious race, from whose source have sprung Glyndwr, Cromwell, Milton, Wellington, Picton, and Raglan, men who have so vividly upheld the historic traditions of the Cymry, the least recognition that could, in justice, be made. lies in the Red Dragon finding a well-deserved place on the national flag. Nothing could be more appropriate than that the standard of their unconquered forefathers should still be floating over the Wales of to-day. The respective claims of Ireland and Scotland to be treated on an equality with their Saxon neigh- bour have been fully recognised, while Gallant Little Wales has to be content with the "honour" of a mere incorporation with England It is to be hoped that Welsh representation, in the above respect, will not be allowed by the Powers that be to rest indefiitely, as has, unfortunately, been the case in the past. I am, dear Sir, Yours faithfully, S. TREVOR JONES.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
WHAT'S IN A NAME? Editor of the CYMRO LLUNDAIN A'R CELT. SIR.- The political party that is seeking to change the fiscal policy of this country has obtained a tactical advantage by the assumption of the title "Tariff Reformers," for the implication that the word "reform" carries with it is, that of improve- ment. This tactical advantage has been, in my judgment, considerably increased by the acquiesence of their opponents in the title so assumed. I believe that the Free Trade party has made a serious mistake in allowing to remain unchallenged the claim of the'new Protectionists to appear in the political world as reformers," and the mistake, though qualified, has not been quite neutralised by sometimes placing the designation in inverted commas. But even now, it is not too late for them to make their protest by adopting some other description for those who wish to bring about once more the conditions that obtained in the hungry forties." The names I suggest for the policy which we oppose, and for the supporters of that policy are respectively "Tariff Revival" and "Tariff Re- vivers." It is, however, not likely that those names will be generally adopted by the Free Trade party unless the whole of the Free Trade press simul- taneously begins to make use of them. I am there- fore sending this letter to Editors of Free Trade papers throughout the country with the suggestion that from this date these new names shall be adopted as some indication that we, on our side of the fiscal controversy, at any rate, do not regard the present proposals as being a revival of an old dis- credited policy which was long ago tried and found wanting. I am, Sir, Yours, &c HERBERT M. THOMPSON. Whitley Batch, Llandaff.
