Notes and News.
Notes and News. THE Welsh XV defeated the English side, at Cardiff, on Saturday. Some of the London press critics state that the play was below the usual Welsh standard." As a matter of fact the Welsh players did not over-exert themselves. It will be against the Scottish side, at Edinburgh, next month, that the men of Cambria will have to give of their very best. EXCELLENT progress is bieng made with the new Lampeter to Aberayron railway. The route runs through an exceedingly lovely bit of country. MANY of the older country people in Wales still retain a strong prejudice against the motor car. They still persist in travelling to market in the old-fashioned van, or noth- ing at all. THE conveyance of the twelve tons of books from Sir John Williams' residence, at Llan- stephan, to Aberystwyth, where they will form the nucleus of the Welsh National Library, was quite a big business. They took over a month to pack, and four furniture vans were requisitioned for the purpose. It is evident that the National Library is going to be a real big thing," as the Yankees say. A SERIES of matches were played on the Golf Links, at Cannes, the other day. Amongst the M.P.'s competing were Mr. Lloyd Ceorge, Sir E. Sassoon, Sir J. Dickson- Poynder, Lord Elcho, Messrs. J. A. Pease, Schwann, Craig, Carr Gomm, A. Osmond Williams, and C. Harmsworth. OUR South Wales correspondent writes The Rhondda musical enthusiasts are evidently determined to compete at the Welsh National Eisteddfod in London." I HEAR that the newly-formed Siloh Choral Society, of Ton, Pentre, will enter in the choral competition, under the leadership of Mr. James Davies. The first practices have been well attended, and there is great enthusiasm amongst the membeis. It is a fine choir." A WELSH religious weekly relates the following, under the heading of "A New Version":—Some boys were asked what they knew about the Pharisees. They are a mean lot, Sir," said one boy. Why do you say so ?" Because some of them brought a penny to Christ once, and he took it in his hand, looked at it, and said, Whose subscription is this ? THE decision to hold a Welsh National Pageant at Cardiff is worthy of every sup- port. The city on the Taff is enterprising there are no two doubts about that. And although it is perfectly true that the pageant will be a splendid advertisement for the chief coal exporting centre in the world," there is no getting away from the fact that it will also be a splendid advertisement to Wales, and give a great fillup to Welsh Nationalism. The official statistics of the Church in Wales and Monmouthshire, show thnt accommodation is provided for 458,917 persons the number of clergy is 1,543 and the number of communicants 193,081 the number of churches 1,546, the number of mission rooms 318, and the total of the voluntary contributions for the Welsh coun- ties for twelve months £ 296,412. For the four dioceses the total of the voluntary con- tributions is Y-,298,982, made up of £ 108,652 from Llandaff, 993,195 from St. Davids, zt52,876 from St. Asaph, and £ 44,257 from Bangor. The Sunday School returns show the number of scholars and teachers to be 182,243 The net income of incumbents is £ 208,385, made up of £ 53,924 in Llandaff £ 75,624 in St. Davids, £ 48,320 in St. Asaph, and £30,517 in Bangor.
