Notes and News. WALES was strongly represented in London this week. The Eisteddfod proclamation was evidently a big draw. THE Pan-Anglican conferences during the next fortnight promise to be interesting gatherings. Church representatives from all parts of the world are in London at present attending these conferences. IT is evident that the Welsh Church Com- mission means to make up for its dilatory beginning. It held sittings during the present week, quite unconscious of its being a holiday week. THE London National Eisteddfod of 1909 will be held at the Albert Hall during the last fortnight of June. This will be some- what an earlier period than is usual for the National festival, but it will be the most advantageous for the Welsh in London. THE Llangollen National Eisteddfod for this year will be held during the first week in September. Llangollen being a holiday resort, prefers to have the Welsh Festival after the busy season is over. CARDIFF intends to shine in an Eistedd- fodic style during August Bank Holiday. It proposes to hold a semi-national Eisteddfod on the 3rd and 4th of August, which will be a musical festival throughout. OUR compatriots in America are very patriotic, and they intend to hold a National Eisteddfod at Salt Lake City during the first three days of October this year. The chief choral prize will be 1,000 dollars, and worthy prizes are offered for minor choral contests and for soloists. ONE feature in this great gathering across the Atlantic is the prominence the committee gives to music composed by Welshmen. Works by Protheroe, Emlyn Evans, Joseph Parry, R. S. Hughes, and others form the chief test pieces, an example of patriotism that could be well emulated by "national" committees in our own country. SPEAKING at the recent Baptist Associa- tion at Llanstephan, Mr. John Hinds, London, referring to Church transfers, urged that, in cases where people were leaving for London, the secretaries of the various churches should acquaint the secretaries of the churches to which they intended going, of their departure and their prospective lodgings. He referred to a recent case where, but for the intervention of the police, an innocent Welsh girl would have been taken to a house of ill fame. A GOOD deal of comment is being made at the Church Commission as to the alleged Anglicising influences of the Church in Wales. It is only fair and right to say that some of the Nonconformist Churches are also decided sinners in this respect. The Wesleyans, for instance, are great Angli- cisers. In Cardiff, for example, the strongest opponents of Welsh teaching in the schools are the English Wesleyans whilst the local church people show a majority in favour of such teaching. Let us do justice in this matter at any rate. IT appears that Castle Street Welsh Baptist Church, London, is opposed to the principle of insisting upon all Church members being total abstainers. Mr. J. Hinds, speaking on the subject at the Baptist Association meetings at Llanstephan, said he was not ashamed to say that the Castle Street Church had passed a resolution to the effect that, whilst they were in sympathy with the movement alluded to, and rejoiced at the awakening on this important question, they respectfully declined to approve of the stand suggested to be taken, as they considered it interfered with the independence of the Churches according to the constitution of the denomination. Every Church, he claimed, was self-constituted, and determined whom it received or rejected as members. THE London Welsh Rugby Football Club has been awarded a grant of Y,100 from the Welsh Football Union, a sum that will materially assist the London Club to meet its unusual heavy charges in connection with the ground and general upkeep of the Club. THE death. of Dr. Rees, Cefn, removes from our midst a splendid specimen of the old type of Welsh Calvinistic Methodist minister. He was a real Cymro and loved his native land devotedly. His preaching was rugged and simple, with no trace of the New Theology about it.
