Diau y buasai yn llawer mwy oni bae am y ffog. Yr oedd nifer dda o gystadleuwyr ar yr unawdau, ond Cor Falmouth Road (M.C.) yn unig ddaeth ymlaen i-ganu Ein Hior, ben llywydd." Gan na chafwyd amser i fanylu ar y canu, addawyd rhoddi sylwadau yn y golofn hon. Y beirniaid oeddynt Tom Price a'r Ysgrif- ennydd." Defnyddir y Gymraeg lie nad oedd ond Cymry yn cynnyg. Y BRIF GYSTADLEUAETH GoRAWL.-Cor Falmouth Road 0 ran y lleisiau, yr oedd y cyfryw yn rhai da ymhob adran, ond yr oedd yr altos yn wan, a rhai o'r lleisiau hytrach yn arw. Gyda chyfnerthiad yma, bydd y cydbwysiad yn well. Yr oedd yma gyd- symudiad boddhaol, geiriad eglur, tonydd- iaeth gywir, a mynegiant da. Darn ydyw hwn sydd yn gofyn am gryn nerth i'w gyf- Iwyno yn briodol. Rhaid ymdrechu dangos yr urddas a'r mawredd a berthyn iddo. Rhaid hefyd i'r testynau," &c., gan yr amrywiol leisiau fod yn sefydlog a phendant, a dylid gofalu am weithio y gerddoriaeth, o ran y mynegiant, i bwynt (climax) priodol rhwng y ffigyrau 18 a 19 ar y copi. Ac yn sicr (er nad yw y copi wedi ei nodi yn wahanol) effeithiol fyddai dwyn y rhan ddil- ynol i mewn yn ff. ar Ein Hior," &c. O'm rhan fy hun, nid wyf yn hoffi y modd y mae y darn wedi ei nodi i'w ganu. Byddai yn fwy efteithiol fel hyn o'r dechreu hyd y ffigyrau 18 yn Allegretto Maestoso. 0 18 i 19—Allegro Maestoso. 0 19 hyd y diwedd, Allegretto Maestoso. Y pwynt mawr ydyw cael allan o'r darn gymaint ag a fyddo yn bosibl-yn gydweddol a'r testyn neu y genadwri. Nis gwn a wnai pob beirniad gytuno a'r sylwadau hyn, mewn cystadleu- -aeth Cafodd y cor uchod y wobr. Yr arwein- ydd ydoedd Mr. Jones, organydd Capel Falmouth Road. Y CHALLENGE SOLo.Dyma'r gystad- leuaeth oreu o lawer. Yr oedd rhai wedi dod o Gymru i'r ymdrechfa hon ac y mae yn ddiogel dweyd ei bod yn wir ragorol. Yr oedd yma gystal datganwyr ag a glywir yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, a gwelir oddiwrth y dyfarniad fod yma gryn deilyng- dod yn rhai o'r datganwyr mwyaf llwydd- ianus. In this competition twenty-one singers -competed, and the following "notes" are given for the information of each.: — Mr. Bond, solo, "Sound an Alarm." A .good tenor voice, but forcing too much. Time not steady. Maldwyn, song, Through the forest." A powerful tenor voice. Intonation slightly at fault early in the song. Top notes harsh. Good dramatic colour. Llinos Gwendraeth, song, Abide with me." A good contralto voice, but not under complete control. Careful phrasing and nice expression. Miss Hill, song, Love Divine." A voice that much could be made of. Her tones were of musical quality. Lacking in style. Miss Clegg, song, Beloved it is morn." A sweet voice. Time a little unsteady, and expression in the early portion lacking in colour. Much better towards the end. Nice style. Miss Ross, song, Angus Macdonald." A good voice, but some of the high tones not of .good quality. A still further study of the song will reveal to this lady more possibili- ties in the expression. A very fair rendering. Miss Dorothy Clare, song, Look up, 0 heart." A good voice, but words indistinct. Confining herself too much to the copy. Nice expression and style. Miss Clunes, song, The Holy City." A pure soprano voice. Musical feeling. Good style, but the performance too sentimental. Mrs. Taylor, song, A Summer Night." A good soprano voice. The rendering as a whole too boisterous. Speech not quite clear at times. A really good performance, but not sympathetic enough. Clwydian, song, Angels ever bright and fair." A beautiful soprano voice, nice feeling and neat rendering throughout. The song, however, was not such as to enable this singer to shine in this competition. A song with more scope in it for expression would probably have placed this sweet singer at the top on this occasion. David, song, Come unto me." Produc- tion of voice not good. Forcing unduly. Mr. Smith, song, Devout Lover." A fair voice requires more training: speech indistinct. Gwenda, The Pilgrim." Intonation faulty. Production not satisfactory. Miss Naylor, song, Melisande." Ex- cellent voice, well trained but rather a simple song for such a competition as this. The following appeared in the final:- Miss F. Price, song, The Enchantress." Fine contralto voice. Very correct per- formancee. Lacking in depth of feeling. Miss A. Thomas, solo, With verdure clad." A voice of much purity and flexibility." The interpretation, as a whole, was excellent. J S., song, "The Sentinel." A fine baritone voice, and an artistic rendering. Olwen, solo, "Hear ye Israel." One or two notes in the higher register slightly flat. Be not afraid," a good rendering. Excellent soprano voice .and good style. Effie, song, A promise of life." A beautiful voice and a sympathetic perfor- formance. Rev. I. Thomas, solo, "If with all your hearts." A beautiful voice, of real tenor quality. A rendering largely inspired. Bronant Jones, solo, Sound an alarm." An excellent bass voice. A fine performance in the real Handelian style-which one does not always get, but which is so essential to this Master's music., As will be seen, this was a most difficult competition to adjudicate upon, the music sung being so varied. The award was as follows the first and second prizes were added together, three pounds being given to Mr. Bronant Jones, of New Jewin; one pound each to Miss Annie Thomas, Hackney, and Rev. Ishmael Thomas, Stanford Rivers, Essex. The adjudications upon the other musical competitions will appear in these columns next week.
