SEA ANGLING NOTES.
SEA ANGLING NOTES. LLANDUDNO SEA ANGLERS' ASSOCIATION. President: Right Hon. Lord Mostyn. Hon. Secretary: Mr Howel Jones, 32, Mostyn Street. Hon. Treasurer: Mr R. Dunphy, Mostyn Street. The weather up to the time of writing (Tuee- day) has been rather too 'boisterous for pleasurable Boat Angling, but those who have put up with the discomfort have been rewarded' with good catches. The heist catch of the week of which I ami infos-mod. is that of Mr Wood and two friends, who took 251b. of mixed fish i'n the Bay. One of our mem-bars fishjing from Pigeon Rock took a few smaC.1 flats and pollack, but the wind was blowing right inshore and pre- vented decent fishing, the wind also -being un- favourable for angling from Austin Rock. Tine Pier Head is now getting lined with" anglers each day. The takes have been rather small this week, and we anxiously await warmer sunny weather. On Monday evening we were favoured with the company of Mrs Habteadand Mirs George Atkinson, who were using the fly for pollack, but unfortuttiately the pollack were late in making their appearance, only doing so as the ladies were preparing to leave the Pier. Mr and Mrs Malcolm Harby were also angling, and Mxis Harby, who is a most enthusiastic lady-auigler, was rewarded I with a fine codling,, which she landed success- fully. Mrs Halstead also hooked a well- swivelled paternoster complete and landed it with great success. In conversation with Mr Halstead, I asked him his opinion of the various patent tops one sees on the different rods in use. Mr Halstead stated that in his opinion the china, top is pre- ferable. But, he. adds, the china tops in a good many cas,e,¡ are too. large, and could be reduced to one-half tlhe size and not lose any of their efficiency. It is difficult to explain without a diagram., but the china top should have at each side of it a brass or white metal piece coining to a V shape and forming .a guard;, and this would do 'away with a constant source of trouble to the Rod user, viz., that c)f the line getting coiled round the top of the rod. To those interested in the art of casting from the reel the article in the "Fashing Gazette" giving the report of the Highbury Angling Society's Tournament should prove of interest. In addition toi this there is a photo of Mr Attwood, of the; Highbury Anglers, breaking the British record with 2ozs. weight, his casts being 265 feet, 5 in. 270 ft. 1 in. and 288 ft. 9in., making in all for the three casts, 824- ft. 3 in. The rod used was a "Hardy" of 12 ft. 6 in. in length and a 3-j in. Siftex, reel with a Theater silk line. One or two of our members are skilful '.casts, and it would be interesting to know the extreme, distance to which they oouid cast with say a 4 oz. lead and a 5 or 6 in. reel. For the benefit of the anglers to, whom boat fishing doe not appeal a description of the shore angling to be obtained here may be in place. Pier Head:—This is of course the spot to which most visitors come as being1 the handiest and the best known place to them. During the autumn and winter months we have very faiir sport here, although the takes. have fallen off very considerably of late years, due to we know not what as it frequently happens that fish in abundance can be taken from boats and on the Pier one cannot obtain a bite even. No doubt during the summer months the constant arrival and departure of the steamers scares away fish, but if one is content to have mcderato sport the Pier can be recom- mended. Almost any tackh: may be used with effect here as, the fish are jf a mixed variety, including pollack, -codling, jabs, plaice, sea bream, edible, shell fish, and during the warm- est months, conger. The favourite baits are mussel, soft crab, and ragworm, sand worms, imitation sand e-el and fly are often used also. The best spots- are from the third to the fifth h k posts -on- the front and from the ctep-s near the bathing place. During the conger season, for these fish one should drop the line in the swim noarest the steps on the left hand side of the alley way. Every kind of tackl'e can be purchased in Llandudno- and bait may be .obtained from the boatmen or from the In- spector on the Wei Shore. Next week I shall give a. short description of the fishing to be had from Austin Rock and Pigeon Rock. A correspondent writes me in reference to tmy paragraph last week relatng the luck of a party of trippers who enjoyed good sport amongst the codlings. The story he says reminded him of a party of fOUir visitors who crume from York- shire and wanted to go 'out iii a, boat. They thought the charge too much, but agreed to it after the boatman had offeTe-di the, use of some lines and baft to try their 'luck amongst the finny tribe. Not one of the four had ever dropped a line in the sea before, but their luck was remarkable. When they returned they had nearly thiirty pounds of fish of different sorts, and went 'back to BradforCt, that night, taking the catch with them, highly delighted with theiir trip ta Llandudno,. Sport at the Pier Head on Saturday was almost entirely confined to an involuntary com- petition between Mr Gooperand Mr Trevethan in inedible crab catdhing. The- number caught was not totalled up, but there must have been quite a couple of dozen. The peculiarity of the whole thiing was that not one of the other anglers seemed to be troubled with the soft- shetfted crustaceans. The only fish caught on the Pier from two until after five were one dab and one pollack by Mr Trevethan. Items of interest relating to sea angling will be gladly received, and -should be. addressed to the Editor of the "Aclvertser." ROD AND LINE.

CHESTER HISTORICAL PAGEANT.…
CHESTER HISTORICAL PAGEANT. Dancing is to contribute a lairge share to- wards the success of the coming Chester Pageant. For many weeks Mrs McLellan has been busily engaged in attaching both great and small Terpsichorijan mysteries tram which she has evolved] many specialities. In the intro- duction the representation of tihe Dee' (gives an excellent reason for dancing, for the- banks of the Dee are to be defined by .children dressed as wild flowers. They \yill be so- -grouped as to give all the tints -of the rainbow, being in two bending lines to mark the banks of the river. They appear agaiin in Episode II. when King Edgar's barge passes between them roweid by the eight tributary Princes, and nymphs lightly trip before it suggesting the undulations of the water. On ail olr-dinary stage the effect that is ob- tained here would be quite impossible; it is the huge extent of the arena- that allows the hun- direds of children to be gathered into one picture. Their exit is described by Mrs McLellan as "the serpent sw allowing its tail," j a figure of speaoh. which, as a. figure of dancing is the turning in of the ends of the lines be- tween the oriiginal lines so that the dancers are proceeding in opposite directions, which with the light tripping step and blending of colours i-i will igive beautiful scintilation. To Walter Crane the Pageant is much in- deibted for much of the effect of these cosaune? as they have been mainly gleaned from his flower book, so well; known to all art lovers. In mauve their will be anemones, foxgloves, violets and lady's bower. In pink ragged robin, roses, daisies,, and cockle. In flame, wheat ?nd poppies. In yellow -and orange marigolds, primtroses, king's cup, bishop's weed, butter- 'cups, ox-eye daisies amd lilies. In green, fennel and settle. In blue, forget-me-nots, hairbeiils, .cornflowers, and oanterburybells. In another shade- of mauve will be pansies, anemones, and columbine. Then flag an light green and autumn green. The nymphs who pre- ceed the barge will all be in water tints under- dressed with silver-sheen. Miss Phylis Jones will! lead them in their dance,. The triitons will be bullmshos and water lilies, and will bear the twelve yard train of Deva. The Midsummer Revels of Episode VII. give reason for many dances, all of whti-cihi will re- flect the spirit of the seventeenth century. There will be two Maypole dances, and a dance of Dairymaids. Forty hobby-horses will in a dance magd a wildi charge, Ked on the one side by Merry Andrew, and on the other by Jack in the Green until the fray suggest heated dispute, when these valient warrior ignom- iniously take flight., but return to accept with much self esteem, the, final .applause. Mrs McL-ellen has already been responsible far the dancing at several carnivals and pageants, includling tho-st at Cheltenham and Cardiff. She expresses much indebtedness at Chester to the valuable help rendered by Miss Hilda, Weloldhouise of 10, Lumley Road. Chester, who is assisting her as her piamist.

CONWAY RURAL COUNCIL. OBJECTION TO GIPSIES. On Friday Jiast Mr Hugh Owen (Llandudno Junction) presided over a meeting of the Con- way Rural Council. Comm-,unications were re- ceived from the police authorities at Conway and C'olwyn Bay to- the effect that they would do aJl! in their power, a-s requested, to prevent gipsy encampments in the district. Tfhe Clerk readl a letter from the London and North- Wastern Railway Company complaining that '.gipsies were using water from their property without their peormlissiion, and calling the Coun- cil's attention to it. It was. decided to charge all persons who 3Iorw gipsies to camp on their ground for the water, etc. used, and, further, to call the attention of landlords of the school attendance officer to the -gipsiieis' children as to tiheicr attendiing sdhool. With regard to the gipsies encamping at Pen- sarn, Llandudno Junction, Mr W. Hughes, Bryn Pyidew, the landlord concerned, wrote to say that, he regretted that they were such a nuisance to the Clotunqil; they were not so to him. However, he intimated that he would provide them with the neceasary sanitary con- veniences. Mr L. John, the ganitary Inspector, reported that the nuisance had been materially mitigated.

Mr A. J. Oldrnan asked whether the Board was a Parliamentary debating society.- daughter.) It would appear so. Personally, he was in favour of .granting votes for women, but he did not believe in .introducing poiiiti-cs into the proceedings of that Board. For that reason (he proposed that the petition be left on the table. Mr S. R. Bartley (Llandudno) -seconded the ,10 motion, which was agreed to, -even the lady members1, with one exception, voting in favour of the resolution. The interesting confession made by that famous French actress, Yvette Guilbert-, recent- ly, to the effect that she is ardent Suffragette and wants a vote, recalls the keen interest which she takes in the rights of women, par- ticularly those of her own profession. "I want to defend our profession," sihe says; "to en- able all actresses to earn enough money to live respectably, and to stop the abuse of the weak- ness of women. In Paris sibe has founded an organization to provide poorly-paid actresses with Cwe,,s.es., so that they may be able to get work. In this way she has helped 450 ladies.
