MYSTERIOUS BOY TRAVELLER.
MYSTERIOUS BOY TRAVELLER. The boy of thirteen years of age arrest- ed by the railway police on the charge of travelling without a, ticket to LJandudno, and failing to give a satisfactory account of himself, was brought up at, the Conway Children's Court on Monday. The name he had given to the police wa,s, George Thomas. Deputy Chief Constable Rees said that, the boy had given certain in- formation to the police which was all wrong. Inquiry had been made at Bir- mingham, whence he said he had come, and none of his statements was found to be correct. Under the circumstances, he would have to ask the justices to remand the boy for another eight days to the workhouse, to see what, would be the best thing! to do with him. Detective M'F'all, of the London and North-Western Railway Company's police, informed the court, that, a description of the boy had been issued, and circulars had been sent to all the inspectors, but so far nothing definite was known of him. The remand was granted. Before he left the court "Thomes" was further questioned by the railway detec- tives and by the Conway police, but very little could be got out of him. He signed his name, "George Thomes," in a, facile way, and said that he had not seen his mother and father for two years. He had been living with "Uncle Joe," who came O 7 to New-street, Birmingham, with him a week ago on Saturday, and bought two tickets, one for himself and one for the boy. "Uncle Joe" put him in the train and gave him his ticket, and told him to go to Llandudno, saying that, he would follow after that day. "Uncle Joe" was a traveller and sold varnish. He carried the varnish about in a bag, and stayed at different places on his travels. His home was in Birmingham. That was the youngster's first statement to the detective on Monday, but when pressed for information as to where in Birmingham the home was he returned to his story that, "Uncle Joe" did not- live in a. fixed place, because he was always travelling. "But he must have some place he calls home" persisted the officer, "he cannot always be travelling']" Ulti- mately the boy conceded the point, and aid his elusive relative had a house, a big house, in Birmingham. He was question- ed as to the way he went, to New-street station, and said it was up New-street, past the Monument, and down some steps. It is evident that up to the present the boy has quite baffled the detectives who have seen him, and is determined not to say anything which will disclose his identity and enable his antecedents to be traced. He has admitted having been in Manchester and other cities, but will not say what, he did there. A lady who was travelling to Llan- dudno last week made a statement to Ex- aminer Swann that she was seated alone in the Manchester train as it left Chester station. When the train had got well in motion she was startled to see the lava- tory door open and a boy emerge. The lad sat, clown in a corner of the, compart- ment opposite her in a, quiet, matter-of fact way, took a half-penny illustrated paper from his pocket, and began reading i t. He was not interrupted until the train reached Llandudno Junction, when Examiner Arthur Jones came to look at tickets and took the boy away with him. At Conway on Monday "Themes" wa,s told that a report had been made, of his hiding in the lavatory while the train was at Chester station, and he replied, "I never did."
