CARNARVON TERRITORIALS.
CARNARVON TERRITORIALS. PRESENTATION OF COLOURS. At a meeting of the -Carnarvonshire Terri- torial Association held on Thursday, the 6th inst., the Lord Lieutenant (Mr J. E. Greaves) presiding, Colonel Darbishire (commanding the 6th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers) stated that arrangements were, being mads for presenting the colours to the battalion on the 17th inst. at Carnarvon. The battalion is now at full strength, numbering as it does 810, and it was only by a technicality that it had not the' honour, in common with other battalions, of receiving the colours at Windsor. The colours a-re the gift of Mrs J. E. Greaves, and will be presented by Mr Greaves. Mr Lloyd W. G. Eughes (Coedhelen) has offered the use of a suitable field on-the Aber side for the cere- monial, and a good muster of the members of the battalion and of its friends is expected on the occasion.
NATURE JOTTINGS.
NATURE JOTTINGS. JULY H.-I'o-day, tflhe voice of the master of evasion—the corncrake—issued, at long in- tervals and in a ihalf-heaxtedi manner during the day, but more frequently and' continuously at dusk, from within the browning and redolent ihayfields. It as a voice which we shall pro- bably miss during the next few days—I should be surprised to hear it ia fortnight hence. The blackbirds and thrushes and chaffinches, and the majority of hedge-sparrows have ceased to sing, and we hear the dhiffohaff and whinclhat only occasionally. The period lof the .summer silence, 'when the majority olf ibirds, stricken with moult-sickness, are silent, is, happily, and fortunately for the birds, a short one, so sthoJrt indeed that early in August we shall agiaån be listening to the robin's trill in the gardens, and' the wren's hurried laughter in the glades, but others, particularly the migrants, we shall not hear until the spring. NEW TRAIN TO NORTH WALES.
NEW TRAIN TO NORTH WALES. The London and North-Western Railway has a curious facility of renewing its youth. It is always bursting out in a fresh place. Thia summer it is prepared to whisk us off to North Wales im. a splendid) coxridor train with- out a stop. The tired and jaded Londoner can step on board at Euiston at 11.15, and in a few minutes under four hio'urs he can step out on the platform at Rhyl, and be at Llandudno a few minutes afterwards. The 209 miles to Rhyl is covered without a stop, and the train serves all the lovely spots which lie to the north-west of it. And where can we find a lovelier holiday ground ? Mountain and sea are. close together. At Llandudno., with its splendid bay, and the Great and Little Ormeis as guardians, we can make our headquarters, and there is the lovely country of North Wales, ibehind us, every mile of which opens up some new diream of loveli- ness. There is Bettws-y-ooed, beloved of artists. There is all the grand Snowdon coun- try within easy reach. All these the North- Western makes easy of access by issuing cheap season tickets, which enable us, when we are tired of sea, and pier, and bathing machines, to go inland and explore mountain, and river, and waterfall. The North-Western has brought all this wealth of ,country almost .at our doars by their improved train service to North Wales.— "Daily Chronicle."
A BETHESDA FIRE.
A BETHESDA FIRE. MARKEIT HALL DEISTROYED. About seven o'clock on Sunday morning a man passing up the Bethesda High-street notice.d smoke issuing from the Bethesda Mar- ket Hall, and at once raised the alarm of fire. Bethesda possesses neither fire engine nor brigade, but every able-bodied man in the vil- lage fturned 'out, and, for a time looked help- lessly at the. smoking ibuÜdJing. Then some lengths o,f hose were obtaineid from the police station and from Caellwyngreydjd, but there was a difficulty in piecing them together. How- ever, this was done at last, and the fire, by dint chiefly of (burning itself out, was ex tinguished about ten to'clock. The hose was chiefly iuseful iin saving the, 'hoiuse of the lessee of the hall, Mr Joihjn ROIbeæts; and the Victoria Hotel, ,both of which practically formed por- tions of the Market Hall. Both these houses suffered considerable damage from waiter. Ser- geant ROIwlanÛlsallid the Bethesda police were promptly on the scene; and rendered great assistance. The Market Hall wa,s gutted, only the ibare stone walls and one or two charred rafters .remaining. The weekly market was held there on Saturday night. No one can suggest how the fire originated. The damage, which is covered, ds estimated, to be about -9 <8400. Everything in the hall was destroyed, but noboldy was injured. It was in the Bethesda Market Hall that the Penrhyn quarryanen during their famous strikes held their mass meetings, and some of the most famous Labour leaders and officials of the various trade unions have delivered speeches there. Among these were Mr John Burns, Mr W. H. Massingham, Mr Clement Edwards, Mr Pete Curran, Mr William Jones, Mr W. H. Williams, the "Quarrynwm's Glad- stone," and others. The hall was also the re- cognised .place for political meetings of both parties, and (the fwmcus Penrhyn Harmonic Choir was trained and, uised to rehearse, there. (II
