LONDON GOSSIP. CHRISTMAS NUMBERS. ■Christmas throws the shadow of its com- ing far ahead, one of the earliest symptoms being the appearance of the Xmas num- bers. We know, mostly beforehand, whait they contain. The same old stories, with pictures of frost, ice, and snow, of blazing fires, and hospitable hearths, of ladies almost hidden among their wraps, and furs, stepping from carriages into the snow to enter the houses of skating parties, snowball fights, and so on. It, is exceed- ing'ly difficult for the twentieth century publisher to give us anything really new in Christmas numbers, and there is a disposition to regard many of the old traditions as a little maudlin. Dickens was the inventor of the "Christmas Num- ber," and gave the old-fashioned Yuletide a new leiase of life. He appealed to a world, which, compared with that of to- day, was pleasantly unsophisticated, and people were willing to laccept the conven- tion of the walking, "ghost," and fireside tales. Nowadays people refuse to 'have their blood curdled by ghost stories, and there are few, if any, to be found in this year's Xmas annuals. THE! FRONT-DOOR CAROLLERS. The Christmas Carollers who begin operations in November have degenerated into something like a. nuisance, not only in London, but also in the cities and towns of the provinces. They mostly inflicit themselves, upon the suburban residential districts, and the so-called carol-singers are generally small! voiceless boys and girls, with no musical training, who in- termingle their tuneless inflictions with re- peated knocks on the door for pence. Numerous protests have been made,, the last year or two, against this practice, which has been allowed to grow up into a nuisance, and is little more than a travesty of old time Xmas custom. IF WOMAN. AS PUBLIC SPEAKERS. Whatever may be the outcome of the Suffrage movement, it has shown that women have the gift of public speech. We have always had women who figured as good platform speakers, and it would be easy to name ai score or more possessing this qualification, who have never in- terested themselves in the Suffragist move- ment. But it has been left to this agita- tion to shew that the sex does not lack fine natural orators. Considering that training in public speaking has hitherto been practically confined to men, it is sur- prising that so many women can be found who compare favourably with the average Member of Parliament in powers of speech and expression of connected thought. Few who merely read the speeches of public men in the newspapers are alwar1 of the hesitation, the frequent interruption for a word or thought, that in the majority of cases characterises their utterance. < MARRIED WOMEN AS INCOME EARNERS, The sentiment that married women should not compete with unmarried women, as income earners, flourishes in this country. In France) it is a much more general custom for the wife, as well as the husband to be an income earner, and this accounts for no small part of the thrifty savings of the French nation. The agitation that married women should not be employed seems to have scored a vic- tory at, Clovent,ry, where the educational authorities have decided not to employ married teachers, and the engagements of those who are married will be terminated next year. Fortunately for a good, many people this rule is not carried out in all callings of life, as otherwise the married charwoman, the actress, the authoress, and many others, would find themselves de- barred from earning their living. THE NATIONAL CAT CLUB SHOW. Close upon 500 cats reposed in their luxuriously cushioned cages at the annual show of the National Oat Club held last week at the Crystal Palace. Apparent- ly the blue Russian, with copper-coloured eye, is the cat of the hour and few of these animals seen at the Show were priced lower than £50. White, smooth-haired cats with blue eyes would appear to rank next in favour, while Manx and Abysin- ian varieties are considerably sought after. The biggest cat in show, an enormous black and white animal, weigh- ed eighteen pounds, and possessed a mag- nificent coat. THE AUSTRALIAN TERRIER, The coming of the Australian terrier is now an assured fact, and although it stands little chance of finding its way into a Society woman's boudoir, it. is likely to be much appreciated among dog-lovers. In colour the animal is sandy and black, in weight about lOlbs.; rough-haired, has zn zn short legs, and eyes that give the impres- sion of black rings. It is a most vigilant watch-dog. and equals or excels all known terriers in its capacity for killing rats with a single nip. Among fashionable women "Poms" lead, toy spaniels coming; next, and then the Pekingese. THE CANINE; MOTORING OUTFIT. The motoring outfit of the fashionable woman's toy dog is an important affair. It contains his goggles, furnished with gelatine lenses, the rims being padded with rubber; also a double-breasted over- coat, fastened with large fancy buttons, and provided with a wide storm collar, and pockets, the latter containing dainty handkerchief oearing a. delicately em- broidered monogram. Then there are his suede boots, high, laced in front, and lined with fur, also his rubber overshoes for wet weather. Last, but by no means least,, comes a case containing plates and saucers for his especial use, and his little folding bed, with the softest of blankets and silken sheets. It is to be questioned, however, whether the majority of pet toy [ dogs would not, infinitely prefer to rough » things a little more and concerning a w'Jser distribution of the money expended I upon them there cannot be two ideas.

A gentleman undertook to purchase a blouse for his wife. "What bust?" inquired the assistant. "Why, I didn't hear anything!" Father: "Well, sir, what. can I do for you ?" Now, I don't like to doubt either of you. Can you think why he declares you were, going at that rate ? Is there any grudge he owes you?" Clergyman: "No; I can't think of any- thing—unless, perhaps, it is that I mar- ried him three years ago.' There was once, a comedian who went out with, a fishing party, and began to suffer from thirst. One of the crowd took pity on the sufferer, and fastened a bottle of beer to his fishing-line while he was on a voyage of exploration. When the actor returned he found his line heavy, and started to haul in what he thought was the biaggest fish of the day. Gleeful over his changed luck, he shout- ed to the captain — "Hey, captain, this is the place. Anchor right here; we're sailing over a brewery." 1

A gentlemanly merchant traveller in a railway carriage met a lady, and politely rendered her such assistance that she re- ciprocated by permitting him to talk to her. He became quite friendly, and de- sired to know where she lived and who she was. "Oh," she replied, "I'm only an ordin- ary little woman, but my friends persist in trying to make me somebody." "Ah," was the gallant answer, "I am sure they act quite wisely and in good taste." "You flatter me, sir, and yet I have no doubt a band will meet me at the station when I arrive at Windsor." "Indeed?" he replied, in open-eyed astonishment. "Yes, and the same band always meets me. Isn't that flattering?" "Very, my dear miss; but may I ask what band it is that is always so honour- ed?" "Oh, yes, certainly; it is a husband." He caught on to the arm of the seat for a minute, and then went into the next car- riage and bumped his head during the change.

A COOL JOKE. A business man came down to his office on a winter morning when it was bitterly cold. "Whew! how cold it is!" he said to one of the clerks. "Just shut that safe, if you please." The clerk obeyed with a puzzled look. Then, what he could restrain his curiosity no longer, he asked: "Excuse me, sir, but why did you tell me to shut the safe?" "Why," replied his employer, with a sly chuckle, "there are a good many drafts in that safe." The village schoolmaster looked anxious and worried. "What's the matter?" asked the vicar. "I'm worried about the boys in the upper classes, sir," replied the master. "I've been teaching them how to revive the apparently drowned." "Well, why should that worry you? You could not teach them anything more use- ful." "Yes, sir, I know that, but I've already caught several of them trying to drown one another in order to practise what they've been taught."

PET DOGS IN ANCIENT EGYPT. As the French saying goes, "There is notihng new except, that which is for- gotten," and we are told that thousands of years ago, the fashionable women of ancient Egypt, kept their little pet dogs as do the Society women of the present day. That they were pampered and petted is shown by the fact that mummies of dogs have been discovered with ivory bracelets round their legs, and with teeth which testify to their dainty living, whilst others had what was once a, leather lead attached to a fancy collar. HAIR ORNAMENTS. With the present mode of hairdressing, tiaras are causing their owners consider- able anxiety. Many of the said owners have tried fitting these ornaments upside down, but the result has seldom proved a happy one. Of course the bands of dia- monds and other precious stones now ap- pearing in the jeweller's windows, arranged flatly on the halir, are the orna- ments most to be desired, but then com- paratively few can afford to have their jewels reset, with every change in the dressing of the hair. Much, however, can be accomplished by means of imitation stones, and pearls, stitched upon velvet bands, or run upon wire, the scheme, as regards colour, following that seen in the gown. A POPULAR, TRIMMING. Our affection for fringe goes merrily on, and is almost as great as our love for but- tons, numberless varieties appear- ing upon hats, wraps, gowns and accessories. Many of the very clinging robes, boast overdresses, finished with a heavy knotted silken fringe, recalling to mind that in evidence upon the plush stage curtain. Suede fringe too, appears, the little hand-bags of this skin being lavishly adorned with fine strips. Suede belts also shew a deep fringe of the same, falling from the buckle, which is placed a little to the left side. These belts match precisely the skirt over which they are worn, and the effect though perhaps a trifle barbaric, is certainly smart.
