PIER PAVILION CONCERTS.
PIER PAVILION CONCERTS. OPENING OF THE: SEASON. The announcement that the concerts at the Pier Pavilion wfcll commence on Thursday evening next, and continue, without a break, throughout the season, cannot fail to meet with the heartiest approbation of all who have the interest of Llandudno at heart. Nobody will deny, despite the opposition, in certain circles to suggested improvements, that these grand orchestral entertainments attract many thousands) of visitors to this town during the summer months, who other- wise would spend their holidays else- where. The opening concert on Thursday will be all the more attractive to Llandudnoites from the fact that Miss Lucy Nuttall's services have bee* retained. Miss Nuttall, it will be remembered, was the vocalist engaged for the last of the series of Autumn Concerts in 1907, and who made such a lasting impression upon her auditors, that the wish was freely and very generally expressed that an opportunity should he given of again hearing this gifted cantatrice, and now that the opportunity is afforded at the earliest possible moment by the Pier Management, we venture to think there will he no falling off in the numbers who will patronise the opening concerts for the season of 1908. Miss Nuttall's services have, been retain- ed from the 16th until the 20th. On the 17th and until the, 24th Mr Denbigh Cooper (baritone) will also sing nightly, and for the first iSpecial Concert, Satur- day, April 18th, Miss Cecile Brani, soprano, from the Covent Garden Opera, will be the special artiste engaged. Miss Brani will make her debut before a Llan- dudno audience, and judging from the London press opinions, the concert patrons have, a, treat in store. The damage caused to the pier, by the disastrous running ashore of the ship "William Henry" is being rapidly pro- ceeded with, !but will not be completed by Eastertide. The necessary work, how- ever, will in no way interfere with the comfort of the pier paltrons; indeed it will be a source, of interest to many who will witness the divers, at work. An army of painters have been for some time past busily engaged beautifying the Pier Company's property and making it attractive; the work is well in hand, and everything will be in this Company's pro- verbial apple-pie order early next week. Season tickets may now be obtained ad- mitting to the pier ,and all the concerts, a saving to patrons which, as in former years, they will no doubt take the, fullest advantage.
THE INCORPORATION OF LLANDUDNO…
THE INCORPORATION OF LLANDUDNO The poll of the ratepayers on the ad- visability of applying for a charter of in- corporation for Llandudno will be taken to-day. The problem has been much dis- cussed during the week, and on Thursday evening the Ratepayers' Association held a meeting in opposition to the proposal. Mr John Roberts, Bryn Celyn, presided over a good .attendance. The principal speakers were Mr Spinther Jamies and Mr Roger Dawisori, who gave sound reasons for the town re- maining among the urban districts. Mr James proposed a resolution to that effect, which was formally seconded by Mr Cheetham, who, however, was careful to add that he personally was strongly in favour of incorporation, but 'seconded the resolution only to allow discussion. The opposition wasi led by Mr Gresley Jones and Mr O. L,l. Roberts. M!r Robt. Roberts followed on behalf of remaining an Urban Council, and the resolution was 1 carried, only some, eight or nine voting in opposition, the majority refraining ZD from voting. As stated in these columns last week, incorporation would Ibe worth obtaining if it could be proved that such a charter would prevent the town hing further milked for the benefit of the county. It must be confessed that the speakers on Thursday night quiite failed to do this. I The ratepayers were told that the trend of modern legislation was to' make boroughs more and more self-governing, but on close examination it would appear that these henefitscan not possibly be, enjoyed until the population has grown into at least 25,000, There is, however, still one thing: to be considered, and that is that the position of a Mayor is certainly a more dignified one. A seaside resort depends a great deal upon appearance, and there is no doubt that, a corporation can put on a, great deal of "drapery" and make a good show. The question that ratepayers have to de- cide is whether this pomp and show is worth the extra.—probably very little extcra,-tha,t it will cost? One point was made much of by the speakers on Thursday night, i.e., that it would be possible to pay the Mayor a salary. The members of Llandudno Coun- cil have been endeavouring to find ways, to circumvent the Local Government Board Auditor for some years in order to advertise the town. Hopes are entertain- ed that it will be lawful to. advertise out of the rates before very long, but how many years will elapse before, the present bill passes into law would, he difficult to guess. Its promoters, are optimistic, but so far have not given many grounds for taking that view. The Mayor's salary could be paid him on the direct under- standing that it was spent in advertising, and so at least one good end would be achieved. It is to .be hoped that there will be a ( heavy poll, and that the result will be of such a nature that will finally settle the matter one way or the other. ,ON AT THE CONSTITUTIONAL CLUB. There was a crowded attendance of the members of the Llandudno, Constitutional Club on Wednesday night to consider the question of the vote to be given to-day (Saturday) on the incorporation proposal. The president of the club (Mr R. S. Cham- berlain) presided, and he announced to the members that he had personally in- vited Mr James Marks to attend the meet- ing and give some of the facts in regard to the advantages of incorporation. Afr Marks set forth the main grounds, on which the proposed change of govern- ment is advocated. He said that incor- poration was found to benefit most the towns having the largest rateable value per head of the population, owing to the different system of rating. From eighty new boroughs, the figures respecting; which he had taken, Mr Marks found that Hove had the highest rateable value per head and the Dudley had the lowest. At Hove it exceeded £10, and at Dudley it was E20 10s. Llandudno was unfortunate- ly situated in this, respect, as its average value per head was nearly 210. The average of the last eleven towns incor- porated was £ 588. No vote on the question of incorporation was taken, but the general tone of the meeting was favourable to the movement.
DEATH OF MRS. ROBERT WILLIAMS.
DEATH OF MRS. ROBERT WILLIAMS. It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mrs WilMams, wife of the Rev. Robert Williams, B.A., Rector of -blanbedr-y-Cenin, and formerly for many years curate of Llandudno. Mrs Williams had been an invalid for many years, suffering from ,a weak spine, but subsequently cancer set in, and despite medical skill the disease could not be erradicated. The immediate cause of ceath, however, was bronchitis, the result of catching a chill. Mr and Mrs Willialnis-she, was then Miss Garter—were fellow-students at Aberystwyth, and both took their B.A. degree of the London University in the same year. Mr Williams was appointed .senior curate at Llandudno in the year 1896, and was from there preferred to the incumbency of Llanbedr in the year 1905. During their stay in the parish, Mrs Wil- lams was not able to go much about among the parishioners,, and to' strangers was somewhat reserved, but amono- her intimate friends and in the family circle she was regarded as a most, beautiful character. The husband has lost a nost devoted and loving wife, and the children ,a tender and affectionate mother. She was taken away in the prime of life, being only 41 years of age. Much sympathy is ielt with Mr Williams and the two chil- dren. The elder, Miss Aldwyth Katrin Williams, holds an eight years scholarship at the Ashford School, and during the last few days her parent, received the welcome news that she had passed in the honours class in the Junior Cambridge Local Ex- amination, being third in the whole coun- try in F'rench, fourth in English, and tenth in religious knowledge. The son, Master Robert Vernon Williams, isi at Llandovery School. THE! FUNERAL.' The remains were conveyed to St. George's Church, Llandudno, on Monday evening, when a memorial service was held on Tuesday morning, at which the ^'ev- If Hughes, M.A, (Rector) and. jRev. W. El. Jones, M.A.; officiated, The funeral was private, and took place at St. x'udno, the only mourners being the Rev. Roberts Williams, daughter and son, Miss Williams, Mr Carter (brother), Mrs Wyard, Dr. and Mrs Gooddy, Mr Curtler Mr Nathan Jones, and Nurse Hassa.lL Mrs Broome sent her carriage, and the coffin was covered with floral trib-ut,es. At the graveside the funeral service was con- ducted by the Rector, assisted by the Rev. I W. Ei. Jones. On the coffin, which wa,s of polished oak, with heavy brass fittings, was the inscription, "Mary Louisa. Williams, died April 3rd, aged 41 years." NATURE JOTTINGS. APRIL 7. The chiffchaff has come, and with no -uncertain voice proclaims its arrival; so soon as I had entered Glod- oaeth Woods this morning its cheery little song was almost the first to greet me. A n Z!1 friend, however, tells me that it was sing- ing at Deganwy on the 2nd. The adverse weather conditions—cold northerly and easterly winds and frosty night's—have, interfered wilth the timely arrival of the chiffchaff last year a few birds came in to the Creuddyn district before the end of March, but, as yet, it appears to be very sparingly distributed throughout North Wales. With favourable winds-for winds bring the birds, not the sunshine we shall see the migrants "rushing" in; many of us do not mind) how soon they come. R. W. J.

THE WARREN MISSION CON- CERT.—The Town Hall was well filled on Wednesday evening, when the children attending the Warren Mission gave their annual concert. The platform presented a very pretty spectacle when the little ones took up thei position on the stage. Alderman Robert Roberts was announced to preside, but was unfortunately not able to be present, the Rev. Gwynfryn Jones undertaking the duties of both chairman and conductor. There were no fewer than twenty-seven items, on the pro- gramme, including the humorous dialogue for eight persons, entitled "The Trial of Ignorance." The entertainment given re- flected great credit on both teachers and scholars, under the superintendence of Mr Edward Williams (Madoc Street), Mr W. O. Williams, and Mrs Ga,rmcl Jones. The proceeds will be handed over to the funds of the Mission.
