LLANDUDNO ELECTRIC TRAMWAY.
LLANDUDNO ELECTRIC TRAMWAY. TRIAL RUNS BY THE CARS. FOT considerable over a decade the question of an electric tramway service has agitated the minds of Llandudno ratepayers, but at last the service is ready for the public, and now only awaits the sanction of the Board' of Trade in order that the general public may take ad- vantage of the facilities provided for reaching any part of the district between the West Shore, Llandudno, and Rhos-on-Sea, and the; second section tal Colwyn Bay, it is expected, will be completed by next Spring. On Friday morning (yesterday) largei bodies of visitors and residents were much interested in the trial runs through Llandudno. A repre- sentative of the "Advertiser" took advantage of the trip, and was most favourably impressed by the smooth running and general comfort. The cars, which are capable of seating 48 per- sons, are prettily designed and neatly decorated. The seats are padded and cane-covered, and brass racks have been provided for small parcels, hats or newspapers. The cars are divided into, two sections, the- back portion being for the accommodation of smokers. Along Gloddaeth Avenue the car obtained a very fair speed, but slowed down a little as it took the curves, which it did easily and without the slightest jolting. As soon as the necessary in- spection has been made by the Board of Trade Inspector a regular service will be commenced, which should and undoubtedly will prove, of great convenience to the people of Llandudno and the ever-increasing number of visitors to this locality.
H. B. IRVING AT LLANDUDNO
H. B. IRVING AT LLANDUDNO There was a full house on Thursday evening last at the Grand Theatre, when Mr H. B. Irving and his clever company appeared in the late Sir Henry Irving's version of "The Bells," which was preceded by "King Rene's Daugh- ter," a light and pleasing curtain raiser, in which the artistes acquitted themselves very ably. Miss Dorothy Green as "Iolanthe," both looked and acted charmingly the sympathetic part of a blind girl. In "The Bells" Mr H. B. Irving's appearance was the signal for prolonged applause, which lasted some considerable time. Calls before the curtain were continuous, but all attempts to secure a speech from this talented actor were unavailing, the exhausting nature of his masterly performance of Mathias being, no doubt, responsible for this. That Mr Irving will be prevailed upon to address his admirers ere he terminates his visit to Llandudno., for his impressions of Llandudno and the Grand Theatre, with which we understand he is great- ly delighted, should be of considerable value to Llandudnoites. To-night (Friday) this famous impresario will appear in "The Lyons Mail," and on Saturday in a matinee, at 2-30, in W. G. Will's "Charles the First," and on Saturday evening "The Bells" will again be staged. The bookings, we understand, are extremely heavy, and Mr Irving's visit will be such, we hope, as to ensure a return visit next season.
APPEARANCES ARE DECEPTIVE.II
APPEARANCES ARE DECEPTIVE. In idle mood I s-trolled beside a brook, Whose silvery stream flowed gently to the sea And wondered when, to choose a path 'twas free, It left that open direct way, and took This winding one, through e-very shady nook. For I had heard and true, it seemed to me That from the moment dancing forth with glee From mountain berth for ocean home 'twould look. Later I climbed the mountain's rugged side, Scanning across the valley and the plain, No tree, nor shrub, that from the sun could hide Was there, but those that marked the brooks slow train, And further on a hill stretched far and wide, Blocking all Toads., but this towards the. main. Superintendent Owen said this was his 28th appearance, and that he had qualified fcr the second time for the' black list.
--A TALE OF A HORSE.
A TALE OF A HORSE. COACH PROPRIETOR AND VETERINARY SURGEON CHARGED WITH CRUELTY. CHARGES DISMISSED AFTER REMARK- ABLE EVIDENCE. At Llandudno Police Court on Monday John Marson, Rhos Mews, ithos-oii-bea, was cnarged with cruelty to. a horse on July 60th. Mr R. S. Chamberiain prosecuted on, lOehalf of the Society, and Mr Bliss Hill, Colwyn Bay, de- fended. inspector Eakins, R.S.P.C.A., deposed that he first saw the horse going sugiitiy lame in May last and spoke to Mrs uroome's who Then own- ed it) coachman about it. tie next saw the animal in defendant's stable on j uxy 31st, and examined it. it then suffered from ring- bone and strained tendons, and was tit for no work. Defendant said there was nothing the matter with it, but it only went a. bit rocky. in repiy to iivii Hill, witness denied that He had been requested by Mrs Broome to take the case up. Mr Broome s coachman had seen the horse as leader in the charabanc team, and was surprised, tor Mrs Biroome had parted with it to oe slaughtered. Gabriel Ureenman, coachman to Mrs Broome, Sunny ihiii, said that in consequence of what the inspector told him the horse was examined by Mr Frank Booth, who said it was suttering from ringbone and that the wisest thing to do was to destroy it to put it out of misery. In reply to, Mr Bliss Hill, witness said that after being cautioned by the Inspector the horse was puL, out to grass. He did not know who took the horse away on July 25th, but be was told it had been taisen away to go ty the Kennels. Consequently he was very much sur- prised to meet, it as leader in a charabanc. Mr Bliss Hill: 'There was no trick as far as Mr Marson was concerned. Witness: Not in the least. Mr Hill: I think you were present when it took eight of us to catch the animal this morn- ing.—(.Laughter.) Witness: I could have. caught it myself in half the time. Mr Hill: Because the horse was lame, did it suffer pain ? Witness: He would as soon as he. got on the road. Mr C. A. Hutton, veterinary surgeon, Llan- dudno ,said he examined the, horse on August 2nd at Sunny Hill. It- was then lame from ringbone and strained tendons. If it, was worked on the 30,h July it would have been great cruelty. He thought, Mrs Broome was well advised in having the animal destroyed. In reply to Mr Bliss Hill, witness said it was. almost impossible for a lame horse to work without pain. 'Mr Hili: Oh, indeed. It is quite new to me. I'll leave you at that, much obliged for the, in- formation. On behalf of defendant, Mr Hill said he, was a very well-known horse owner, who had been connected with horses all his life and never been convicted of any cruelty. He considered the Society had taken the case up very foolish- ly and recklessly to oblige a lady who was now sorry to be dragged into it. The facts were that Mr Marson had bought the animal from Mr Booth and had used it as a leader in his charabanc team. The horse as such went well, and passing Mrs Broome's carriage he naturally pointed it out to the coachman with pride. The next thing that happened was a visit from the Inspector, .and then learned that Booth had no right to sell the animal, and finally the sum- mons for cruelty was issued. The horse had been sent, back to Mrs Broome. John Marson, on oath, said he had thorough- ly examined the horse. There was no sign of heat on the legs after driving him. In fact he went better each time he drove him. It was a perfect pleasure, to drive, him, and he had been offered £50 for the animal by a visitor. In reply to' Mr Chamberlain, Marson gave details of the transaction with Booth, from which it appeared that the price of the, animal had been fixed at R.7, and a cheque for that amount drawn out for Booth to call for. It had not been called for, however, but he had it withhim in his pocket. Mr Henry Herbert Aldridge, veterinary sur- geon, Chester, said the animal was a useful old horse and quite fit for work. He had examined the horse that morning, and found it slightly lame, but suffering no pain. A ringbone was completely formed. la replj to Mr Chamberlain, witness said he did not agree wi'lh Mr Hutton in his lameness theory He would, holwever, consider the evi- dence of a man who had examined the animal on the day of more value than that of one who examined it a fortnight later. At this point the Bench stopped the case and dismissed the charge. Mr Bliss applied for costs, but the application was not entertained. THE CHARGE AGAINST MR FRANK BOOTH The charge of aiding and abetting against Frank Booth, veterinary surgeon, Colwyn Bay, was then taken, Mr Chamberlain prosecuting V and Mr A. E. Crabbe defending. Mrs Broome gave evidence of defendant ex- amining the, horse and informing her that it should be slaughtered. Defendant offered to take the horse to Denbigh to the Kennels, and it was eventually handed over to him for that purpose. Nothing was said about any price, and defendant had not reported to her that he sold the horse. In fact, he said when the transaction was arranged, "If you sell him to a cabman, he will unnerve him and use him. You would not like that." The next incident was meeting the horse in the charabanc team of Mr Marson. Inspector Eakin's evidence in the first case was admitted, and in addition he said that when he saw defendant on the matter he said he bought the horse for a sovereign. He could not get it destroyed at the Kennels for three weeks. Mr Marson made him an offer for the horse, and he, sold it to him. As a matter of fact, said witness, Booth had made no communi- cation of any description with the hunt Ken- nels about a horse dead or alive. P.C. Martin corroborated the latter in detail. 'The Chairman then stopped the case. There was noi evidence of cruelty. It might be a false deal, but the Bench had nothing to do with that.
