RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN NON-PROVIDED…
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN NON-PROVIDED SCHOOLS. FIRM STAND BY LLANDUDNO SCHOOL MANAGERS. MANAGERS PREPARED TO MEET ALL DEMANDS. At a meeting of the managers of the Llan- dudno Non-Provided Schools on Wednesday afternoon the, question of religioius instrucitiion in the schools :under the Icont, rol of the; Board was introduced by the Rector, who presided. The schools are the Church Walks School, Bodafon School, and the St. Beunoi School on the Great Orme. In introducing the subject the Relator said that since the last meeting of the, Board im- portant events had happened' in the country, events whi'ch were likely to have; an important effect on ithe educational system. As managers of the Llandudno Schools they would have to carefully ,consider their position. The Church Schools ,had been carried o.n in the parish hitherto at auoi istint of expense on their paTt. Their friends hlaid responded1 in a. most liberal manner to all the calls made upon them, and not a single thing was left, lundone which had been demanded. Since the passing of the Edu- cation Act nearly £1000 had been spent on the Church Schools Oif the panish, land as Church- people they were prepared itol meet every legal requirement. As to those requirements he wad- not going to pass any reflection oin anyone, but he maintained that they .as managers had con- ducted the schools in the best manner possible for the future of the children, whose education walsentrusted to them. Their record was second to nolne in the district as far as secular education was concerned, notwithstanding that religious instruction was a prominent, feature. As Churchmenthey could not lose sight of the fact that the schools existed to give religious as well as secular education. By religious educa- tion he meanit doot-rine-- according to the trust deeds. Those deeds were definite. The teach- ing was intended toi be according tothe tenets of the Church. This, however, he could say, that with tfhe exception of Roman Catholice, no application had ever been received from any parents far withdrawal of their chikken dur- ing religious instruction. Nol undue advantage was taken of the teaching to make proselytise. He could safely say that not a single adherent to the Church had been gained by the teach- ing in the istchool from other denominations. He would also, like to state that one of the most efficient teachers, they ever had, and one who had an exceillent report in religious educa- tion, was a Dissenter. She and they had worked together on the most pleaisant terms, and were still working together. They had found that giving the, children a sound religious education did not prevent them holding their own with the other schools, iand they intended to do in the future as they had done in the past, and to take any legal steps they could to secure such religious instruction as was pro- vided for in the trust deeds. It was a matter of great urgency. It was an open isecret tihait the authorities' had some alteration of the Education Act in contemplation, and the authorities should at once be put in possession of their views on the matter. This was the first opportunity he had had of bringing the matter forward, and he feilt it his duty to get a resolution on the matter passed by the managers. Mr Robert Roberts said that holding the viewis he and others did he could not vote on any such resolution. They were awaiting the appearance of the new Education Bill, and it would be premature for them to commit them- selves one way or the other. The Liberal painty would not exclude the Bibfe from the, schools. The' Rector said that hie. had brought this matter up in the ordinary way. They wished everything to! be done openly. Mr Conway propoised the, following resolu- tion:—"That the mian,a,ge,rs of the, Llandudno National Schools resolve that it is essential, in the interests of the children educated in the schools under their managment, that they should be itaught in the future, as in the p-aist, the principles of the Christian religion accord- ing to the terms of the school Trusts, by mas- ters and miis-tresses in regard to whom they have (some retaa ,assurance, that they believe what they teach and whose capacity for im- parting such instruction has been duly tested." The resolution having been formally seconded by Dr. Dalton, Mr E. W. Johnson said he thought it rather hard to expect a Noncon- formist manager tc1 take part in the discus- sion. He was of opinion it would have been faireir if the resolution was adopted as from the foundation managers. He did not wish to press the point, and would vote for the resolu- tion in any case. The Rector polinted out that the foundation managers only regards the fabric of the schools. Siin-ce the iatdopti-on of the Act the managers had met as one Board, and not as foundation and lIe-presentative managers. Hithierto they had worked most harmoniously together and had had no difficulties. Mr Roberts said all agreed that the Biible should not be excluded from the schools. That resolution would exclude all hut Churchmen as head masters at Church Schools. It wiais his contention that all schools publicly sup- ported should be open to masters of all de- nominations. The Reator: In drawing up the resolution I !have, tried to avoid lany insistance on- that. Mr Roberts, continuing, gaid it was only rea- sonable to expect such a resolution, but he hoped that the new bill would satisfy Church- men and Nonconformist alike. The resolution was carried, all the managers present, with the eix-ception of Mir Roberts, vot- ing in favour. M!r Roberts did not vote. It was decided that copies be sent to the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Educa- tion, ia,nd also Mr Lloyd George, Mr Wm. Jones, and Mr Bryn Roberts, M.P.'s for the county and borough-of Carnarvon.
CORRESPONDENCE.
CORRESPONDENCE. LLANDUDNO AND THE COUNTY COUNCIL. To the Editor Sir,—Mr Bone and the Finance Committee have rendered a, gTeiat service to Llandudno by their exhaustive and able report bearing upon the 'unequal demands made by the County Council against Llandudno. Moreover, there is another .serious aspect that greatly militates against the interest of our town, and which is not alluded to in the .committee'rs report, viz., the disproportionate assessments in different parts of the County. Each Council or governing body has to! de- cide each year what rates are needed for the coming twelve months; aind it sometimes hap- pens that a rate based upon half the, rental will be (sufficient to meet this demand. This will be noted by the! varying rates throughout the county. In some few placeis, no rates at all are levied. It naturally follows that non-pro- gressive towns are. frequently rated at one-half the rental, whereas at Llandudno, a cast-iron system obtains that every tenancy is rated up to the, statutory limit. A tenant in other parts of the county can be rated on half his rental, while his competitor at Llandudno is rated at nearly double. As the County Council's claim upon Llandudno is in proportion let Llan- dudno's ratablei value, we are paying twice over. There- iis no; similarity of .aim or purpose betwixt Llaradudno and other parts of the county. The: former is progressive, and imbued with youthful aspiration; and it. seems to me deplorable thaltClur efforts at progress should be hampered -at every turn by the demands made upon, us to 'support and to supply things and conditions in other parts of the county, for which others are morally .responsible.— Yours faithfully, CONWAY SHORE. DESCRIPTION OF A BRIDE'S BOUQUET. To the Editor Sir,—As art florists who made and supplied the bouquets for the wedding of Miss Margaret Owen and Mr J. T. Roberts, we beg to rectify the error in the description of the bouquets. The bride's consisted of English white lila'c, lily-of-valley and (orchids odontoglossum Alexandra) trailled with white satin streamers studded with orchids and mounted with asparagus fern. The bridesmaid's bouquet was as follows :-Liily-o¡f-th0-valley, pale pink carna- tions enchantress, with white siatin streamers and smilax, not. white, chrysanthemums as ie- scribed by you.-Yours, faithfully, W. NEWMAN & Co., Art Florists, 63, Mostyto Street.
